Off Court Advantage: Turning Athletes Into Star Investors A-list athletes like Serena Williams, Steph Curry, Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony, and Andre Iguodala are among the best- known sports stars also playing the investment game in the tech field. The forecast for 2020 is growing teamwork between athletes and tech startups. Indeed, news headlines rotate between startups boasting of professional athlete brand ambassadors and players who are reinventing themselves as investors and fund leaders. “High tech and technology are visible and tempting fields,” says Shmulik Zysman, founding partner of ZAG-S&W international law firm and head of the firm’s high-tech department. With limited years to play on a sports field, it makes sense that a rising number of athletes are eyeing technology for their next step. Adv. Shmulik Zysman, Founding Partner of ZAG-S&W. Courtesy “Top players are still buying cars and real estate. But they must think about the future as well. This is a time when athletes read newspapers like you and me and understand the fortune is laying in the tech field,” Zysman, a former Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball player who is in Israel’s Hall of Fame, tells NoCamels. “At the same time, the top high-tech leaders would love to join forces with the best athletes in the world as it could give them good exposure, marketing advantages and contacts,” says Zysman. “The opportunities for both sides are growing.” Oren Simanian, founder and general manager of Tel Aviv-based Colosseum international sports tech innovation group, wants to keep the playing field fair.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Julie Mason (412-496-3196) GATORADE® NATIONAL BOYS BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR: BRANDON KNIGHT Former Miami Heat Center and Gatorade Boys Basketball Player of the Year Alonzo Mourning Surprises Standout with Elite Honor FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (March 23, 2010) – In its 25th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPN RISE, today announced Brandon Knight of Pine Crest School (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) as its 2009-10 Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Knight was surprised with the news during his second period class at Pine Crest School by former Miami Heat Center Alonzo Mourning, who earned Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year honors in 1987-88. “When I received this award in 1988, it was a really significant moment for me, so it felt great to surprise Brandon with the news and invite him into one of the most prestigious legacy programs in high school sports,” said Mourning, a Gold Medalist, seven-time NBA All-Star, and two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year. “Gatorade has been on the sidelines fueling athletic performance for years, so to be recognized by a brand that understands the game and truly helps athletes perform is a huge honor for these kids.” Knight becomes the first-ever student athlete from the state of Florida to repeat as Gatorade National Player of the Year in any sport. He joins 2009 NBA MVP LeBron James (2002-03 & 2001-02, St. Vincent-St. Mary, Akron, Ohio) and 2007 NBA Draft Number One Overall Pick Greg Oden (2005-06 & 2004-05, Lawrence North, Indianapolis, Ind.) as the only student-athletes to win Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year honors in consecutive seasons.

  • The Case for Kevin By
The Case for Kevin By Http://DraftKevinDurant.Blogspot.Com 24 June 2007 Please send comments, questions, corrections and additional citations to: [email protected] Background : In 1984, a decision was made that altered the course of the Portland Trailblazers and left mental and emotional scars on their fan base that exist to this day. That decision, of course, was to draft Kentucky center Sam Bowie with the team’s #2 pick in the NBA draft, leaving Michael Jordan, who became the undisputed greatest basketball player in the history of the world, to the Chicago Bulls at #3. In a recent interview, Houston Rockets President Ray Patterson defended the Blazers’ decision to draft Bowie, stating, “Anybody who says they would have taken Jordan over Bowie is whistling in the dark. Jordan just wasn't that good.”1 “Jordan just wasn’t that good? ” Reading that quote more than twenty years later, it’s almost impossible to fathom that there existed a day in which “basketball people,” the executive who today are paid millions of dollars to judge the relative mental and athletic skills of teenagers, could not determine that the mythic Michael Jordan was, and would be, a better basketball player than the infamous Sam Bowie. Many things have changed since 1984: AAU youth basketball allows fans to watch players at younger ages, the internet disperses grainy street court video across the world, the NBA has its own television network making famous any and all of its players, mathematical algorithms are used by executives to aid in personnel judgment, and scouts, writers, journalists and bloggers are able to weigh the relative merits of players in ways never thought possible in 1984.

  • Glasnost & Goodwill Highlights Washington's Grassroots Cold War
News Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 28, 2017 MEDIA CONTACT: Julianna Verboort, Marketing and Communications Director, Washington State Historical Society, 253-798-5902, [email protected] Visionaries and risk takers: Glasnost & Goodwill highlights Washington’s grassroots Cold War activists Tacoma, WA - By the 1980s, there were thousands of nuclear weapons aimed at the United States, and an equal number targeted at the Soviet Union. The arms race was running out of control and only a vague notion of “mutually assured destruction” stood between war and peace for the world’s superpowers. And yet, citizens did not sit idly by. Quietly a movement formed, built by citizen diplomats who reached across the Pacific to engage their neighbors, one conversation at a time. Washingtonians, in particular, saw an opportunity to bring peace with their neighbors through business partnerships, sister-city relationships, and cultural exchanges. Presented by the Washington State Historical Society, Glasnost and Goodwill: Citizen Diplomacy in the Northwest is an invigorating plunge into how citizen diplomacy in Washington and the greater Northwest contributed to the thawing of the Cold War. Glasnost & Goodwill is brought to life through compelling photographs, rare videos, fascinating oral histories, and authentic artifacts that trace the rise of grassroots diplomacy in Northwest from the late 1930s through the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and beyond. Many of the citizen activists contributed to and were involved in creating the exhibition. Their stories reveal the levels of fear and hope that drove their unprecedented actions. In 1987, Lynne Cox became the first person to swim the Bering Strait between the United States and the Soviet Union.
