By Ellen L. Weingart

When my husband and I moved to Delaware from Massachusetts a few years ago, we knew nobody in the area and wondered how we would make social connections. We had come because Delaware was far enough south to take the edge off New England winters, far enough north to avoid long, oppressive summers, close enough to our children and their families to be manageable drives and, to be honest, we were lured by vastly more favorable taxes.

In Delaware, because we are so small, we often refer to the “Delaware Way” –working cooperatively to get things done. This mindset makes Delaware a wonderful place for our active Jewish Community Relations Committee (JCRC) to engage in community relations work.

YEAR IN REVIEW In the past year, the JCRC anti-BDS Legislative Task Force has continued to work on prospective anti-BDS legislation. Our work continues in this arena as we find more co- sponsors and an optimal time to introduce this legislation.

The fall of 2017 saw Bagels & Briefings and Wine & Wisdom rebranded and relaunched as FED Talks. Some of this year’s programs included welcoming our friends from AJC for a lunch briefing and live discussion on the relationship between American Jewry and Israel, a breakfast program on Irving Shapiro and the Arab boycotts presented by Dr. Roger Horowitz of the University of Delaware, Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester shared her reflections on her first trip to Israel, two

“Faces of Israel” events including a breakfast PHOTO CREDITS: JFD STAFF program with non-profit founder Amal Elsanah Al’Hjoo and an evening event featuring the Deputy Mayor of Tel Aviv, and a screening of the film On the Map.

The JCRC committee members are regular contributors to the j-VOICE Monthly. Our members are also called upon to respond to items of Jewish concern in The News Journal through letters to the editor and Op-Eds, giving our community the opportunity to work with the media to bring context to a variety of complex issues.

N Whether you’re new or old to the area, a trip to Delaware’s state parks is a must.

For some, a night out listening to music on an open-air stage, or picnicking by the river might be a textbook pastime; here in Delaware, there is an activity for everyone. Whether your thrill is floating down the Brandywine river, biking through lush mountain trails, setting up camp near the North Atlantic Ocean, zip-lin- ing through the forest and over ponds, or canoeing through the water trails of the bald cypress trees, Delaware boasts some of the most beautiful and unique park experiences on the east coast.

One of the rarest of these experiences—

a gem to be discovered—is renting a canoe or kayak and navigating through the various water trails at Trap Pond State Park in Laurel, DE. Freshwater wetlands once covered a large portion of southwestern Sussex County. FINDING Trap Pond retains a part of the swamp’s original beauty and mystery, and features the northernmost natural stand of bald cypress trees in the United States. The pond was created in the late 1700s to power a sawmill YOUR during the harvest of large bald cypress from the area. The Federal Government later purchased the pond and surrounding farmland during the 1930s and the Civilian Conservation Corps began to develop the area for recreation. Trap Pond became one of Delaware’s first DELAWARE state parks in 1951. (2017, June. Retrieved from delawarestateparks.com).

14 | SHALOM DELAWARE | July 2018 ShalomDelaware.org SPECIAL PLACES

The Trap Pond water trails offer access into the majesty of the bald cypress swamp and the treasures that rest within. The trails begin at the boat ramp—where visitors can rent kayaks and/or canoes for approximately $8/ hr or $40/day—and stretch eastward into the dense canopy of a unique wetland world of dotted lily pads and large rooted trees extending beyond the surface of the water. It’s likely that you’ve never seen anything like it. You’ll experience visions of Great Blue Herons and basking snapping turtles, and hear the beautiful silence between serene sounds of bullfrogs and birdcalls. Paddlers might also spot otter, water snakes, and Prothonotary Warblers. As some of the water trails fork, you can continue in either direction and the passages begin to narrow, and eventually become shallow enough to begin your return route. As an impermanent explorer you might feel as though you are on the set of a movie, gliding slowly near beaver dams and banks of chartreuse-colored moss. I suggest packing a lunch for the canoe ride and dine right on the pond in the clusters of the bald cypress trees.

When not on the water, visitors can stay Another wonderful benefit to camping at Trap Pond in late May. That is what most people will say CONSERVATIVE EGALITARIAN / SYNAGOGUES when they are “synagogue shopping.” I know that is what my family was looking for when we came to Congregation Beth Shalom. I invite you to join us and see for yourself what Congregation Beth Shalom can mean to you. --Jodie Pezzner, President
