QUOTABLE QUOTE Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak of Lubavitch once met a watercarrier carrying full buckets and remarked: “When one encounters water there is an appropriate maxim of the Baal Shem Tov that one should say, namely: ‘When encountering water one should say that the Baal Shem says that it is a sign of blessing’ – , Tevet 21 THOUGHTS ON THE PARSHA FROM RABBI SHABBOS PARSHAS CHAYEI SARA

I am sitting here at This as we bless the new month of Kislev the , late at night which contains the 19th of Kislev representing the on the first day of the birth of Chabad Chassidus that has the Love of Global Conference with Hashem and the Love of every Jew as it’s foundation, the Rebbe’s Shluchim. we must thank Almighty G-d for sharing with our I was invited to give a world this Inner beauty of the Torah that gives us talk during their opening the knowledge and assurance that the Messianic era session, setting the tone is really knocking at the door. for this year’s topic and subject of emphasis. It Have a great Shabbos and wonderful week. was primarily how to impact G-d‘s universe to fulfill the purpose of creation and including every single Jewish and non- Jewish human, every single creation and every single moment of existence. Rabbi S Lipskar Sitting in the room were almost 3000 Jewish leaders from around the world, representing and leading millions of Jews in thousands of communities effectively, efficiently and practically. This was not a gathering to discuss a pie-in-the-sky dream of elevating an entire world or a Kumbaya moment of self-satisfaction, but a serious confab dedicated to implementing 70 years of the Rebbe’s directives, expectations and unbelievable empowerment to practically elevate the entire creation.

In a world that has lost its proper focus trying to find a meaningful foundation for its future while roiling in a maelstrom of doubt, insecurity and instability, this group is solid, strong, focused and clear with a persistence and assurance that is remarkable.

Global warming could have been the title of the meeting. It would not reference the environmental debate of a concept that makes no difference to the world as we can do nothing about it as only G-d can, but a global warming of the heart, soul, and mind that underscores a life of meaning, purpose, faith and happiness.

Shabbat, 25 Cheshvan Monday, 27 Cheshvan True Love [Ishmael] dwelled throughout the area [settled The Purpose of Wealth by] all his descendants. Genesis 25:18 Isaac sowed grain in that region that year. He reaped a hundredfold, for G-d had blessed Literally, the Hebrew original reads: “He fell him. Genesis 26:12 throughout the area. . . . ” Ishmael was the “fallen” version of Abraham. Abraham personified It is clear from a close reading of the Torah’s holy love – love for G-d and kindness to others. narrative that the patriarchs were astute Ishmael personified love in its “fallen” version, an businessmen. Nonetheless, it is also clear that obsessive desire for physicality and sensuality. they engaged in material pursuits solely with the objective of fulfilling G-d’s will. In this case, Isaac’s In our own lives, it is our task to transform our true goal in sowing grain was to be able to give love and passion for material things – the fallen charity to the poor, which the Torah stipulates can love of Ishmael – into a holy love for G-d. only be performed with one’s own produce. Like our patriarchs, when our involvement in the pursuit of a livelihood and wealth is similarly motivated, we are blessed with overwhelming success. Sunday, 26 Cheshvan Double Identity G-d told her, “Two nations are in your womb; two Tuesday, 28 Cheshvan powers will diverge from within you. The upper hand will pass from one power to the other.” Genesis 25:23 Uncovering Hidden Potentials Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and found a well of Metaphorically, Jacob and Esau represent the two fresh spring water there. Genesis 26:19 souls (and their opposing drives) that exist within each of us. We each possess an inner Jacob – i.e., Although digging wells certainly served to further our Divine soul with its G-dly drives, and also the advance of civilization wherever they were an inner Esau – i.e., our animating soul with its dug, they more importantly exemplified Isaac’s selfish drives. When our Divine soul asserts itself, message to the world. As opposed to filling a pit it weakens the materialistic tendencies of the with water brought from elsewhere, digging a animating soul. well reveals an already-existing source of water concealed beneath layers of earth. Thus, whereas The Divine soul overcomes the animating soul Abraham’s message to the world was: “Let me in the same way that light overcomes darkness. revive you with the refreshing water of Divine Light does not have to actively exert itself to consciousness,” Isaac’s message was: “Now that dispel darkness – darkness simply ceases to exist you have been revived, look for your inner source in the presence of light. Similarly, as soon as we of water. Dig away all the dirt encumbering your let the holiness and goodness of our Divine souls life, and you will reveal within yourself a wellspring shine by studying the Torah and observing the of Divine awareness. This awareness will quench commandments, the selfishness of the animating your spiritual thirst throughout your whole life.” soul disappears. Isaac’s well-digging teaches us that our flashes of insight or inspiration must be followed up with self-improvement and self-refinement in order for them to make lasting changes.

10 Wednesday, 29 Cheshvan Friday, 1 Kislev The Reward of Perseverance [The king of Philistia and his entourage] said [to The Use of Trickery Isaac], “We have seen that G-d has been with [Isaac told Esau,] “Your brother came with you, so we said: Let there now be a solemn oath guile and took your blessing.” Genesis 27:35 between us, and let us make a covenant with you.” Genesis 26:28 The blessings Isaac bestowed upon Jacob were for At first, the Philistines seized the wells that Isaac material prosperity. The fact that Jacob obtained dug, but in the end they actively sought him out these blessings through cleverness teaches to make peace with him. Similarly, even our most us how we should engage in our own material well-intentioned efforts or spiritual labors can pursuits. When eating or conducting business, sometimes boomerang, actually strengthening for example, we can appear to be merely tending the forces that oppose holiness. However, we to our physical needs, similar to the materialistic learn from Isaac to not be discouraged in the face Esau. But behind this façade, we should really of such unexpected setbacks. Rather, we should be thinking like Jacob: our true purposes should continue our endeavors, which are certain to be spiritual: We should eat in order to have the eventually succeed. strength to do good deeds, study the Torah, and observe G-d’s commandments. We should earn our livelihood in order to have the financial means Thursday, 30 Cheshvan with which to do all these things, and so on. This is Qualifications for Leadership the sort of “duplicity” that we are meant to employ [Isaac said to Esau,] “Prepare . . . so that I in our interactions with the material world. may grant you my soul’s blessing before I die.” Genesis 27:4

Isaac wanted to name Esau his successor because he recognized Esau’s potential to become a fearless, G-dly warrior, dedicated to combating evil. Although Isaac had seen Esau give in to the very temptations he should have battled, Isaac felt that if he would bless Esau, Esau would take up the cause of goodness and righteousness. With his superior power, sophistication, and skill, Esau would then be able to accomplish G-d’s purposes on earth far better than Jacob could.

Rebecca realized Isaac’s error. It was true that Jacob was not the cunning, wild warrior that Esau was. But the keen perception that Jacob had developed by devoting himself to the study of the Torah could well provide him with the cunning necessary to overcome evil when confronted with it. Moreover, Jacob’s devotion to the Torah gave him a much stronger drive to make the world into G-d’s home than Esau could ever have.

From Rebecca’s wisdom, we learn that possessing skill and power cannot on its own make us reliable leaders. We can best develop our own leadership qualities by studying the Torah devotedly, and we should consider scholars of the Torah the ones whom we look to for leadership. 11 PARSHA & HOLIDAY MESSAGES SHABBOS PARSHAS CHAYEI SARAH RELYING ON MIRACLES By Rabbi Yehonasan Gefen

The Half-Shekel of Marriage The man took a golden ring, a half-shekel in weight; and two bracelets of ten shekels’ weight of gold for her hands. Genesis 24:22 A half-shekel—to allude to the shekalim contributed by the people of Israel, a half-shekel per head (Rashi ad loc). The week’s Parshah relates the marriage arrangement and eventual marriage of Isaac and Rebecca. One of the details which the Torah includes is the fact that a ring, a half- shekel in weight, was one of the gifts that Eliezer presented Eternal Life to Rebecca at their meeting at the well. Our sages explain The name of this week’s Torah reading is Chayei Sarah, that this was an allusion to, and the forerunner of, the half- “the life of Sarah.” This raises an obvious question. The shekel contributed by each Jew towards the building of the Torah reading talks of Sarah’s death and her burial, why Sanctuary. should its name be associated with “her life”? Why half a shekel? Maimonides writes that as a rule, With this name, the Torah is teaching us that every person “everything that is for the sake of G-d should be of the can gain an aspect of immortality. Why, then, is granted an eternal existence, but rather a continuous does the Torah instruct that each Jew contribute half a shekel posterity in this material world. towards the building of a dwelling for G-d? The Torah reading focuses on three events: Abraham’s The answer is that such is the essence of marriage. If each purchase of a burial place for Sarah in Hebron, his first partner approaches the marriage with a sense of his or her acquisition of a portion of the Land of Israel, the mission self as a complete entity, they will at best achieve only a to find a wife for Isaac, and Abraham’s granting Isaac his “relationship” between two distinct, self-contained lives. inheritance. But marriage is much more than that. The Kabbalists explain that husband and wife are the male and female aspects of All of these events reflect Sarah’s lifework. Firstly, as a single soul, born into two different bodies; for many years a woman she endeavored that the pledge G-d gave to they live separate lives, often at a great distance from each Abraham, that the land of Israel become the heritage of other and wholly unaware of the other’s existence. This transpired with under the wedding canopy and accord them the opportunity the purchase of the Cave of Machpelah. She desired that her son marry and perpetuate her family. Marriage is thus more than the union of two individuals. It is This is reflected in the choice of Rebecca as a wife for Isaac. the reunion of a halved soul, the fusion of two lives originally Indeed, our Sages explain that it was when Isaac saw that and intrinsically one. Rebecca possessed the spiritual virtues of his mother that he loved her. And when Abraham distributed his inheritance, he gave “everything he had to Isaac,” This reflects the influence of Sarah who made sure that the inheritance went to Isaac. Thus the Torah reading tells us of Sarah’s life, for the events that it describes are a reflection of her ongoing influence, how the manner in which she affected her family and her environment was perpetuated beyond her immediate physical presence. 14 5 POWERFUL INSIGHTS FROM THE REBBE ON PARSHAS CHAYEI SARAH

Indeed, the association of fullest and most complete way possible. G-d with holiness has led to the dichotomy that plagues Western spirituality — the spiritual is separated from the physical. G-d is put into a box of prayer and study and one’s physical activities are considered as separate from Him. From the perspective of G-d’s essence — and the essence of the soul — nothing is further from the truth. G-d is neither spiritual nor material — and equally permeates both the spiritual and the material. He cannot be grasped by the most elevated abstract raptures, nor can the most depraved activities cut one off from Him.

Patriarch of the Jewish People: 15 HALACHA OF THE WEEK BY RABBI DOV SCHOCHET Shadchanut n this week’s portion we find one of the first examples of a Shadchan, a matchmaker. Abraham sends his Iservant to find a wife for his son Isaac. The story is unique in the fact that the Torah goes to extreme lengths to tell us about many details of this event. This causes the sages to point out “The talks of the servants of our patriarchs is more valuable than the Torah of their children”, referencing the fact that while many important laws are just alluded to this story is recounted with great detail. If the parents promise to pay more Shadchan.
