Tjazz scene. The Dakota has been a Twin Cities jazz main- stay for two decades and is now branching out into live record- ings – the first fruits of this for many was that sizzling Barbara Morrison disc that came out this fall. Talking to Pickett, he’s got that Mid-westerner’s classic sense of self-depreciation about the magnitude of his accomplishments, but every bit of his suc- cess is richly deserved. On a personal note, the Dakota was the first jazz club I ever went to (Betty Carter in 1989), and I’ll al- ways have a soft spot for it. – Tad Hendrickson continued ... jazzweek.com • Dec. 12, 2005 JazzWeek 11 Industry Q&A: Lowell Pickett (continued)

JazzWeek: What’s your jazz background? Lowell Pickett: I started presenting shows in Northfield, Minnesota, in 1971 where I went to college. I’d rent the armory there and have people like Muddy Waters, Doc Watson and Leo Kottke. I had a record store there after college too. Then I used to make film documentaries and I did one in 1976 on McCoy Tyner playing at the Guthrie Theater with his septet. So I produced this show and McCoy and I became friends. By the time the Dakota opened in 1985 I had left the film work behind and ran restaurants, which I had done to help make money while I made films. Opening a jazz club is a difficult and risky venture. What prompted you to do it way back when? I’ve started with the idea of creating someplace where I would want to go. I wanted a lot of good wine by the glass, outdoor dining and good food. I also went places to hear music. Jazz was to be an adjunct thing that I’d have on the weekends. We still sort of think that way – we just got a three and a half star review for our food last week in the [Minneapolis] Star-Tribune. The dining part is still a really important , who performs on Barbara Morrison’s Live at the Dakota, with two Da- part of what we do. We opened in ’85 kota Live owners, Elliott Donnelley and Richard Erickson, and Barbara Morrison. and we didn’t have any national acts until ’88 or ’89 because I wasn’t even interested in trying to do that. I didn’t think the Dakota was nice enough to do that, but McCoy Tyner came as a fa- vor to me. He said the room was beautiful and compared favorably to other jazz clubs and he liked it a lot. Then four months later I had Betty Carter come in. Then Ahmad Jamal came, then Carmen McRae, then Shirley Horn, then Marcus Roberts, then and then . So it all sort of happened by accident. That probably worked for the best because you were able to grow organically. Right. I didn’t want people coming to the club solely because of who was play- ing here. There are also so many great musicians in the Twin Cities as well. Now we seem to be doing national acts every week. Now you are branching out again with the new label. We’ve done other things too. ago called the Dakota Foundation for Jazz Education. As for the label, we re- corded an album by Nachito Herrera a few years ago at the club that we didn’t release commercially. We sent it to a few local stations and sold it at the club. The first one we recorded for release was the Barbara Morrison. Now we have four more that we will release in 2006. There’s also been stuff on other labels recorded at the club. Roy Hargrove did an album there. did a Columbia record called Midwest Shuffle that was par- tially recorded there. We also used to do a series with KBEM called Cookin’ At The Dakota. Geoff Keezer’s latest on MAXJAZZ [Windcrafted] was re- corded here and Terrell Stafford’s next album was recorded here. There will probably be some more MAXJAZZ records too because the label likes the club’s environment. The sound is re- ally good and the acoustics are great. It worked out better than we could have imagined. Meyer did the sound design and there is a lot of baffling. What’s the capacity? , who has a 2006 Dakota Live CD scheduled, with Elliott Donnelly. We have a dual capacity. The club is divided into two areas – the restaurant area holds about 140 people, the club area holds about same, and they are sepa- rated by 26-foot curtain. In some instances we open the curtain and the capac- ity goes to 270. We do that occasionally for some shows that we could only do at the Dakota if we do it that way. Sometimes we’ll do a single show and Sun- day where it’s open – last time John Scofield was through town we did that. Dr. John did three nights solo that way too. Why do the label? It sounds like the club keeps you plenty busy. There are a lot of great great people that don’t have labels. The technology to record and preserve this music is much more available now, so it seems like a natural thing to try and do that. The key is get distribution so the record gets out there and at the same time the economic structure makes it possible to re- lease them and make some money. Do you think of these discs as calling cards for the club? That’s not the reason why we did it. If that’s a byproduct of it, then it’s a good

thing. We just wanted to make some good records and make them with some great artists. Some of the artists are not well known either. So we also think of it as a way to get word out on people who deserve a wider audience. Such as Barbara Morrison, who’s such a presence. She is a presence. She’s better known in certain parts of the world. Houston Person is obviously fairly well known and Junior Mance is just killing. We also have enough material from the Morrison sessions to do an album with Hous- ton and the Junior Mance Trio. We did a tribute to Jack McDuff, who lived here the years before he died and played the Dakota a lot, and his band the Heatin’ System wanted to do a tribute to McDuff so we did that and had Joey DeFrancesco play organ. The other one for next year will be a Nachito Her- rera – some of which was just jaw dropping. He has special stuff, even by Cu- ban standards. The new one will be a little leaner and more jazz with a couple of covers. Bruce Henry is the final one. He’s a singer who lives here and in different lifetime he could have been Luther Vandross or some- thing. We recorded over the summer with Bruce and harmonica player Gre- goire Maret. JW
