  • Peasants, Peers and Graziers: the Landscape of Quarrendon In
PEASANTS, PEERS AND GRAZIERS: THE LANDSCAPE OF QUARRENDON, BUCKINGHAMSHIRE, INTERPRETED PAUL EVERSON The medieval and later earthworks at Quarrendon, surveyed by staff of the former Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (now English Heritage), are described and interpreted. They reveal a sequence of major land-use phases that can be related coherently to topographical, documentary and architectural evidence. The earliest element may be the site of St Peter's church, located alongside a causeway. The evidence for its architectural development and decline is assem- bled. The site of a set of almshouses in the churchyard is identified. In the later medieval period, there were two separate foci of settlement, each similarly comprising a loose grouping of farmsteads around a green. It is argued that these form components of a form of dispersed settlement pattern in the parish and wider locality. Following conversion for sheep, depopulation and engrossment by the Lee family, merchant graziers of Warwick, a 16th-century moated country mansion was created, with accompanying formal gardens, warren and park. This was one of a group of residences in Buckinghamshire and north Oxfordshire of Sir Henry Lee, creator of the Accession Day tournaments for Elizabeth I and queen's champion. A tenanted farm, its farmhouse probably reusing a retained fragment of the earlier great house, replaced this house. The sites of agricultural cottages and oxpens of an early modern regime of grazing and cattle fattening are identified. In discussion, access and water supply to the great house, and the symbolism of the formal gardens, almshouses and warren are explored.

  • Online Islamic Da'wah Narratives in the UK: the Case of Iera
Online Islamic Da'wah Narratives in the UK: The Case of iERA by MIRA A. BAZ A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Religion and Theology College of Arts and Law University of Birmingham September 2016 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. The intellectual property rights of the author or third parties in respect of this work are as defined by The Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 or as modified by any successor legislation. Any use made of information contained in this thesis/dissertation must be in accordance with that legislation and must be properly acknowledged. Further distribution or reproduction in any format is prohibited without the permission of the copyright holder. ABSTRACT This thesis is an in-depth study into two of the UK charity iERA's da'wah narratives: the Qura'nic embryology 'miracle' and the Kalam Cosmological Argument. While the embryo verses have received scholarly attention, there is little to no research in the da'wah context for both narratives. Berger and Luckmann's social constructionism was applied to both, which were problematic. It was found that iERA constructed its exegesis of the embryo verses by expanding on classical meanings to show harmony with modern science. Additionally, it developed the Cosmological Argument by adapting it to Salafi Islamic beliefs. The construction processes were found to be influenced by an online dialectic between iERA and its Muslim and atheist detractors, causing it to abandon the scientific miracles and modify the Cosmological Argument.

  • The Official Newsletter of Ne've Shalom, the Hull Reform Synagogue
The Official Newsletter of Ne’ve Shalom, the Hull Reform Synagogue Adar 5777 CHAIR’S REPORT March/April 2017 Although I was unable to attend the City of Hull Holocaust Memorial Day 2017 at the Hull Guildhall on Thursday 26 January 2017, I understand that there was a reasonable attendance from our community and the programme of presentations, poems and music was not only entertaining, but thought-provoking. Regarding the Holocaust, I think that it is very important that we continue to pass on the stories of the horrors and sacrifice to future generations of Jews and non-Jews and thus ensure that “We shall never forget”. With that thought in mind, we will be arranging a social afternoon or evening in July 2017 to show the newly released film ‘Denial’, which followed the court case surrounding the denial of the Holocaust. We intend to screen it the Shul hall and the invitation to attend would be opened up to the whole Jewish community. The attendance for the Tu B’Shevat Seder was very good and the informal manner of the Service, with assistance from Aimi Sugarman, and the opportunity to come together to celebrate, to talk and to eat, made the evening truly special. I certainly managed to eat my way through my ‘5-a-day’. Looking ahead, there’s quite a bit going on. Our Purim Service and Kiddush will be held on Saturday evening 11 March 2017. Fancy dress is optional, but feel free to get into the spirit of Purim even if it’s a token effort.

We seek refuge in Allaah from the evil of our actions and from the evil consequences of our actions. Whomever Allaah guides, there is none to misguide and whoever Allaah misguides there is none to guide. I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Allaah and I bear witness that Muhammad is the servant and messenger of Allaah.
