    Clay Manor or né Hecatonchire by Marie Lévi-Bosko: a Novel by Michael Yip A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in English Department of English and Film Studies University of Alberta © Michael Yip, 2014 Abstract Clay Manor gazes inwards at the academic strictures governing the contents of its writing. Clay Manor suggests, through self-reference, that critically-conscious writing exhibits symptoms of melancholy narcissism. In this novel, “Revenue” (a caricature of literary institute), commissions its employees to fetch the “taxes” (memoirs) of a homeowner on McHugh Bluff in Calgary, Alberta. Revenue’s protocols demand that taxes adhere to traditions of the classical novel. Characters inside the house, however, willfully disregard local folkways and thus accumulate back taxes while upholding their dream sequence. Revenue’s employees, “taxmen” (literary scholars), do not receive their payday unless they file paperwork for their commissions. In frustration, the taxman assigned to McHugh Bluff forges the homeowner’s taxes himself. The taxman names his paperwork after the house: “Clay Manor”, and discovers that the surreal lifestyles inside will not accord to literary conventions such as moral order, chronology, or language. Clay Manor uses metafiction to juxtapose the didactic aims of theory against the descriptive aims of story. Clay Manor performs the inward gaze of melancholia thus restricting its own avenues for narrative in order to critique the academic thesis as a mode of authorship. ii Acknowledgements Christine Stewart and Thomas Wharton, first and first, for asking the toughest questions. Platoff Introduction Viewers of international sporting events have become accustomed to seeing informal sporting flags waved by citizens of various countries. The most famil- iar of these flags, of course, are the “Boxing Kangaroo” flag used to represent Australia and the “Fighting Kiwi” flag used by fans from New Zealand. Both of these flags have become common at the Olympic Games when athletes from those nations compete. Recently a new flag of this type has been displayed at international soccer matches and the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Unlike the Kangaroo and Kiwi flags, this new flag has been constructed using a defaced national flag, the Russian tricolor flag of white, blue, and red horizontal stripes, readopted as the flag of the Russian Federation after the breakup of the Soviet Union. A number of variations of the flag design have been used, but all of them contain two elements: the Russian text Vperëd Rossiia, which means “Forward Russia”, and a bear which appears to be break- ing its way out of the flag.

GENDER ROLES AND BLACK STEREOTYPES IN WARNER BROS. CARTOONS: FROM HONEY TO BABS BUNNY Xavier FUSTER BURGUERA 1 Abstract: This essay will use a Tiny Toons episode, “Fields of Honey”, as an excuse to survey stereotypical female and racial roles depicted in the most representative cartoons of the 20 th century. It is particularly relevant to go back to a 1990s cartoon series since, in that decade, Western animation was undergoing crucial changes in its conception which would determine significantly the upcoming animated instalments of the new millennium. Moreover, contemporary cartoonists are now those grown-up children that watched the earlier American cartoons whose allegedly unconscious female discrimination and “innocent” racism might somehow have been fossilised among its audience and become thus perpetuated in the culture and imaginary of the globalised world. Finally, it is also important to be acquainted with the contents of cartoons understood as children’s products, especially in a period where television is taking over most of the parental duties and guidance in children’s development into adulthood.
