A study of 216 specimens of Tineidae, Acrolepiidae, Douglasiidae, and Epermeniidae establishes 73 first country records, three first records apart from the type series, one first record for Europe, and one first record for the Nearctic region. Infurcitinea iberica sp. n., Infurcitinea Corsica sp. n., and Tinagma asymmetricum sp. n. are described as new species. A lectotype is designated for Tineola macropodella Erschoff, 1 874, which is a new synonym of Pararhodobates syriacus (Lederer, 1 857). Infurcitinea romanica CapuÖe, 1966, hitherto a synonym of Infurcitinea olympica Petersen, 1958, is reinstated as a valid species. The taxon kirghiztana Zagulajev, 2002, described in Fermocelina, is transferred to Reisserita. The author of Reisserita zelleri is Zagulajev, 1992, not Caradja, 1920. Introduction Following previous publications on the results of my long-standing faunistic and taxonomic studies on palaearctic members of the families mentioned in the title (Gaedike 2007, 2009) I am able to provide new records for several countries, to describe some new species, and to establish new synonymies. The hitherto known distribution of the species of the families dealt with in this paper can be found in Gaedike (2009) (Fauna Europaea , vers .2.1). The material studied comes from collecting trips of several colleagues, and is now deposited in various museums or in the private collections of the collectors, as listed below. Abbreviations coll. Pararhodobates syriacus (Lederer, 1857) = Tineola macropodella Erschoff, 1874, syn. n. In his paper summarising the results of the Fedschenko-Expedition to Turkestan, pub- lished in 1874, Erschoff described on p. 98 "Tineola" macropodella. The systematic position of this taxon was for a long time unknown. In the revision of the Eriocottidae of the USSR (1988) Zagulajev mentioned this taxon under the genus-name Deuterotinea. It has been impossible for me to assertain, who transferred the taxon to the genus Deuterotinea. Zagulajev studied the specimen, that was (and is still) located in the col- lection of the Zoological Museum of the Moscow State Lomonossow-University (see Antonova 1981: 224). According to Zagulajev's determination label, he considered the species to be conspe- cific with Pararhodobates syriacus. He does not established this synonymization in a formal way with the designation "syn. nov.", and until now this synonymy has not been formally published or used in any systematic lists, catalogues or databases of Tineidae. To fill this gap, Tineola macropodella Erschoff, 1874 is now designated as new syno- nym of Pararhodobates syriacus (Lederer, 1857). Through the courtesy of my colleague A. V. Sviridov at the Zoological Museum of the Moscow State Lomonossow-University it was possible for me to examine a picture of the male genitalia of the specimen of macropodella which was studied by Zagulajev. I now designate this specimen as the lectotype of Tineola macropodella according to ICZN (Article 74.7.), to prevent nomenclatural confusion in the interpretation of this taxon. The labels of the lectotype are shown on Figures 1 and 2. The following two labels were added: "[red paper] Lectotypus cT Tineola macropodella Ersen., des. R. SYSTEMATICS OF THE MEGADIVERSE SUPERFAMILY GELECHIOIDEA (INSECTA: LEPIDOPTEA) DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Sibyl Rae Bucheli, M.S. ***** The Ohio State University 2005 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Dr. John W. Wenzel, Advisor Dr. Daniel Herms Dr. Hans Klompen _________________________________ Dr. Steven C. Passoa Advisor Graduate Program in Entomology ABSTRACT The phylogenetics, systematics, taxonomy, and biology of Gelechioidea (Insecta: Lepidoptera) are investigated. This superfamily is probably the second largest in all of Lepidoptera, and it remains one of the least well known. Taxonomy of Gelechioidea has been unstable historically, and definitions vary at the family and subfamily levels. In Chapters Two and Three, I review the taxonomy of Gelechioidea and characters that have been important, with attention to what characters or terms were used by different authors. I revise the coding of characters that are already in the literature, and provide new data as well. Chapter Four provides the first phylogenetic analysis of Gelechioidea to include molecular data. I combine novel DNA sequence data from Cytochrome oxidase I and II with morphological matrices for exemplar species. The results challenge current concepts of Gelechioidea, suggesting that traditional morphological characters that have united taxa may not be homologous structures and are in need of further investigation. Resolution of this problem will require more detailed analysis and more thorough characterization of certain lineages. To begin this task, I conduct in Chapter Five an in- depth study of morphological evolution, host-plant selection, and geographical distribution of a medium-sized genus Depressaria Haworth (Depressariinae), larvae of ii which generally feed on plants in the families Asteraceae and Apiaceae.

  • Stored Grain Insects and Pea Weevil (Live)  Insects Large – Dead Or Alive
To whom it may concern, Proposal for GTA Standards change regarding Cereal grains for categories: Stored Grain Insects and Pea Weevil (live) Insects Large – dead or alive Currently there is a lack of reference with insects of NIL tolerance applied by DA for export and that listed within GTA standards. This has the potential to cause contract disputes especially in the grower direct to port transactions. At present if a supplier delivers grain with live insects for example Small-eyed flour beetles and Black fungus beetles, there is no reference in the standards that declare such insects as NIL tolerance. If the buyer was loading a container direct for export this would pose a problem due to the NIL tolerance being applied by DA for export phytosanitary requirements. These insects are in the same category as Psocids which are listed in GTA receival standards. I would like to see the GTA "Stored Grain Insects and Pea Weevil (live)" & "Insects Large – dead or alive" reflect the Department of Agriculture PEOM 6a: Pests, Diseases and Contaminants of Grain and Plant Products (excluding horticulture) http://www.agriculture.gov.au/SiteCollectionDocuments/aqis/exporting/plants-exports-operation-manual/vol6A.pdf I put forward the motion to have all major and minor injurious pests listed within PEOM 6a that apply to cereal grains to be of NIL tolerance within the GTA standards. 1) This would involve moving the Hairy Fungus Beetle Typhaea stercorea from “Insects Large – dead or alive” to the list of “Stored Grain Insects and Pea Weevil (live)”. Thus taking it from a tolerance level of 3 per half litre to NIL.

Errata and first uppppdate to the 2010 checklist of the Lepidoptera of Alberta Gregory R. Pohl, Jason J Dombroskie, Jean‐François Landry, Charles D Bird, and Vazrick Nazari lead author contact: [email protected] Introduction: Since the Annotated list of the Lepidoptera of Alberta was published in March 2010 (Pohl et al. 2010), a few typographical and nomenclatural errors have come to the authors' attention, as well as three erroneous AB records that were inadvertently omitted from that publication. Additionally, a considerable number of new AB species records have been brought to our attention since that checklist went to press. As expected, most are microlepidoptera. We detail all these items below, in what we hope will be a regular series of addenda to the AB list. If you are aware of further errors or additions to the AB Lepidoptera list, please contact the authors. Wit hin the NidNoctuoidea, there are a few minor iiiinconsistencies in the order of species wihiithin genera, and in the order of genera within tribes or subtribes, as compared to the sequence published by Lafontaine & Schmidt (2010). As well, the sequence of tribes in the AB list does not exactly match that of Lafontaine & Schmidt (2010), particularly in the Erebinae. We are not detailing those minor differences here unless they involve a move to a new genus or new higher taxonomic category. Errata: Abstract, p. 2, line 10, should read "1530... annotations are given" 41 Nemapogon granella (p. 55). Add Kearfott (1905) to the AB literature records. 78 Caloptilia syringella (p. 60). This species should be placed in the genus Gracillaria as per De Prins & De Prins (2005).

Part Two deals with a larger number of families (29 if one accepts the classification that I proposed in 1991: see Entomol. Seand. 22:90-91). These are the Eriocottidae and Tineidae (including the "Euplocamidae" and "Hieroxestidae" ), all members of the Gracillarioidea, Ypono meutoidea, Choreutoidea, Urodoidea (Woekia Heinemann: p. 508, as a "plutellid" genus), Schreckensteinioidea, and Epermenioidea, and all the gelechioid families with the ex ception of most Coleophoridae (only the Amphisbatinae being treated: pp.

  • Natural History of Lepidoptera Associated with Bird Nests in Mid-Wales
Entomologist’s Rec. J. Var. 130 (2018) 249 NATURAL HISTORY OF LEPIDOPTERA ASSOCIATED WITH BIRD NESTS IN MID-WALES D. H. B OYES Bridge Cottage, Middletown, Welshpool, Powys, SY21 8DG. (E-mail: [email protected]) Abstract Bird nests can support diverse communities of invertebrates, including moths (Lepidoptera). However, the understanding of the natural history of these species is incomplete. For this study, 224 nests, from 16 bird species, were collected and the adult moths that emerged were recorded. The majority of nests contained moths, with 4,657 individuals of ten species recorded. Observations are made on the natural history of each species and some novel findings are reported. The absence of certain species is discussed. To gain deeper insights into the life histories of these species, it would be useful to document the feeding habits of the larvae in isolation. Keywords : Commensal, detritivore, fleas, moths, Tineidae. Introduction Bird nests represent concentrated pockets of organic resources (including dead plant matter, feathers, faeces and other detritus) and can support a diverse invertebrate fauna. A global checklist compiled by Hicks (1959; 1962; 1971) lists eighteen insect orders associated with bird nests, and a study in England identified over 120 insect species, spanning eight orders (Woodroffe, 1953). Moths are particularly frequent occupants of bird nests, but large gaps in knowledge and some misapprehensions remain. For example, Tineola bisselliella (Hummel, 1823) was widely thought to infest human habitations via bird nests, which acted as natural population reservoirs. However, it has recently been discovered that this non-native species seldom occurs in rural bird nests and can be regarded as wholly synanthropic in Europe, where it was introduced from Africa around the turn of the 19th century (Plarre & Krüger- Carstensen, 2011; Plarre, 2014).
