PAN-TURKISM AND GEOPOLITICS OF CHINA David Babayan* Introduction People’s Republic of China (PRC) is currently one of the most powerful and dy- namically developing countries of the world. The economic development of the country is particularly impressive, as explicitly reflected in key economic indices, such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP). For instance, China’s GDP in 2007 was $3.43 trillion1, and in 2010 it already amounted to $6 trillion2. The foreign trade volume of the country also grows at astronomical rates. In 1982 it was $38.6 bil- lion3, in 2002 – $620.8 billion, and in 2010 totaled to almost $3 trillion4. According to Sha Zukang, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, China’s economic development is a sustained fast growth rare in modern world history5. Some experts even believe that while the first thirty years of China’s eco- nomic reforms program was about joining the world, the story of the next thirty years will be about how China reaches out and shapes the world6. Chinese analysts calculate the standing of nations by measuring “comprehensive national strength” of these nations7. This method relies on measuring four subsystems of a country’s national power: (1) material or hard power (natural resources, economy, science * Ph.D., History. 1 “China’s GDP grows 11.4 percent in 2007,” Xinhua, http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2008-01/24/ content_7485388.htm, January 24, 2008. 2 Chen Yongrong, “China's economy expands faster in 2010, tightening fears grow”, Xinhua, http:// news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/china/2011-01/20/c_13699250.htm, January 20, 2011.

bulletin online 12.2017 “The Stars, the Silver Screen and the Qipao” costume exhibition at the Hong Kong Film Archive bulletin online 12.2017 Editorial In a few months, on 17 June 2018 to be precise, our Federation will turn 80 years old – a feat achieved by few other international associations in the cultural field. We are planning to celebrate this significant birthday in style with a number of initiatives throughout 2018. These will start on 1 January, with the release of a special FIAF anniversary logo. The setting up of exchanges between the first emerging film archives so soon after their formation in the mid-1930s was the result of the imme- diate realization by their leaders that establishing international contacts in order to share and exchange knowledge, practices, and collections was an absolute condition of their development, at a time when the preser- vation of film heritage was a completely new and unrecognized activity (yet a very expensive one). Within a couple of years they founded an inter- national network – FIAF – which over the last 80 years has cultivated the concept of “sharing” as its one of its raisons d’être. The topic chosen for the next FIAF symposium in Prague and the wealth of paper proposals re- ceived by the selection committee from colleagues in film archives around the world certainly confirm that sharing remains a key preoccupation in our global archiving community today. CONTENTS Indeed, many of FIAF’s initiatives and publications in 2017 have been all about sharing. To name but a few: the new resources

1 UNSTITCHING THE 1950s FILM Á COSTUMES: HIDDEN DESIGNERS, HIDDEN MEANINGS Volume I of II Submitted by Jennie Cousins, to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Film Studies, October 2008. This thesis is available for library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. …………………………………. 2 Abstract This thesis showcases the work of four costume designers working within the genre of costume drama during the 1950s in France, namely Georges Annenkov, Rosine Delamare, Marcel Escoffier, and Antoine Mayo. In unstitching the cinematic wardrobes of these four designers, the ideological impact of the costumes that underpin this prolific yet undervalued genre are explored. Each designer’s costume is undressed through the identification of and subsequent methodological focus on their signature garment and/or design trademark. Thus the sartorial and cinematic significance of the corset, the crinoline, and accessories, is explored in order to determine an ideological pattern (based in each costumier’s individual design methodology) from which the fabric of this thesis may then be cut. In so doing, the way in which film costume speaks as an independent producer of cinematic meaning may then be uncovered. By viewing costume design as an autonomous ideological system, rather than a part of mise-en- scène subordinate to narrative, this fabric-centric enquiry consolidates Stella Bruzzi’s insightful exploration of film costume in Undressing Cinema, Clothing and Identity in the Movies (1997).

  • Phytonyms and Plant Knowledge in Sven Hedin's
GLIMPSES OF LOPTUQ FOLK BOTANY: PHYTONYMS AND PLANT KNOWLEDGE IN SVEN HEDIN’S HERBARIUM NOTES FROM THE LOWER TARIM RIVER AREA AS A SOURCE FOR ETHNOBIOLOGICAL RESEARCH Patrick Hällzon, Sabira Ståhlberg and Ingvar Svanberg Uppsala University This interdisciplinary study discusses the vernacular phytonyms and other ethnobiological aspects of vegetation in the Loptuq (Loplik) habitat on the Lower Tarim River. This small Turkic-speaking group lived as fisher-foragers in the Lopnor (Lop Lake) area in East Turkestan, now the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in China. Information about this unique group, and especially the folk knowledge of plants in the area, is scant. In 1900, Swedish explorer Sven Hedin collected plant voucher specimens for the Swedish Natural History Museum in Stockholm. He noted local names on herbarium labels, thus providing modern researchers a rare glimpse into the Loptuq world. As the traditional way of life is already lost and the Loptuq language almost extinct, every trace of the former culture is of significance when trying to understand the peculiarities of human habitats and survival in arid areas. The ethnobiological analysis can further contribute to other fields, such as climate change, and define the place of the Loptuq on the linguistic and cultural map of Central Asia. LANGUAGE AND FOLK BOTANY Language reflects not only cultural reality and the way of life, but also human habitat and the physical environment.1 Rich biodiversity-based knowledge about the surrounding landscape and its biota (the living organisms of a specific region) has usually constituted an essential component of traditional and pre-industrial societies across the world (Lévi-Strauss 1962; Svanberg et al.

UBRYATOVA Günümüzde Türkoloji ilmi, Türk dili ailesindeki bütün milletlerin dilini, dil yapısını, tarihini, arkeolojisini ve etnografyasını birleştiren bir disiplin haline gelmiştir. Hepimizin bildiği üzere Sovyetler Birliği ailesinde Türk dillerinde konuşan milletlerin önemli bir yeri vardır. Sovyetler Birliği’nin on altı cumhuriyeti içerisinde 5 Sosyalist Cumhuriyetin halkı Türk dillerinde konuşmaktadır. • Forever Puppet Full
Forever puppet: the Uyghur impasse of ‘we’ and ‘them’ Enver Tohti 5th February 2015, Rome Italy The Chinese, Chinese civilization and its culture: The history of China allegedly dates back as early as 4000BC. Here we take a brief look at the Chinese of the antiquity. China is a country with a long and rich history and ancient civilization. According to Simaqian’s account Chinese civilization began with the legendary sage-emperors Huang and Yan in the area of Yellow River Basin known as Yellow Ear Plateau. These two tribes gradually merged after centuries during the Xia Dynasty. This new alliance established a state in the region of the Yellow River Basin, which they believed to be the center of the world, so the state was named “Middle Kingdom”. ! The Chinese civilization that has taken millenniums to take shape has endured the challenges of time and space and still carrying on strong. Like Indus Valley Civilization, Chin’s strength lied in the fact that it was cut off from the rest of the world. Surrounded by oceans, mountains and by the Gobi Desert, their homeland was virtually inaccessible to out side invaders. Having little contact with outside world, the Chinese Civilization grew a strong sense sino-centric world view. They believed that China was the most important and greatest of all Civilizations, and !1 that they were the Center of the Earth. ! Confucianism is an ethical and philosophical system, on occasion described as a religion, developed from the teachings of the Chinese philosopher Confucious (551 – 479 BCE). Confucianism originated as an “ethical-sociopolitical teaching” but later developed into the official state ideology of the Han.

Ostracized by the nascent Argentine Jewish community, the Zwi Migdal Society nonetheless developed the same communal structures as those found in conventional voluntary immigrant associations: a burial society, a synagogue, health benefits, and peer recognition. My archival discoveries underline the significance of this battle to the local Jewish community's centralization and the shifting international articulation of norms around morality, marriage, family, and labor, and develop a history that opens into larger issues of migration, identity, women’s agency and transatlantic politics.
