If I'd review every short story collection submitted to Dead End Follies, I could go an entire years without featuring a novel on the site. That's how many I get. They're quicker to write and relatively easy to put together in this day and age. So, what would make me go out of my way, buy a short story collection to feature on the site? Or rather who? Laird Barron. The man is a grandmaster at inspiring terror with a few words and I would've have let a month of October pass without reviewing a collection from his. They're slower, more cerebral what I don't dislike and, slightly closer to being conventionally Lovecraftian. There a physically or mentally alienated protagonists, sprawling estates lost in the wilderness, dark secrets buried in the heart of nature, etc. These themes aren't unfamiliar to Barron, but there's a definite emphasis on them Occultation: And Other Stories. Occultation and Other Stories is a great introduction to whoever is trying to bridge the gap between Lovecraft and other voices in cosmic horror. It's a collection about the predatory relationship Occultation: And Other Stories men and nature, the invisible and the visible, the infinitely big and the infinitely small. Occultation is also a great tool to understand cosmic horroras we're about to see. It's perhaps the most typical Laird Barron story in the collection and the least connected to the others from a thematic standpoint. The boundaries of human knowledge in a domestic, intimate setting. What makes it powerful is that what happens to protagonist Danni could happen to anyone of us. This is something Barron has always been great at. Taking cosmic horror from the hands of alienated and misanthropic intellectual protagonists and putting it in context for the every Occultation: And Other Stories. In the Lovecraftian sense of the word, cosmic horror is about accessing a greater understanding. A greedy quest for absolute knowledge if you will. This has never really been Laird Barron's thingbut what makes these two stories special is that it offers a considerably scarier alternative: casting doubt on everything you think you know. That is fucking terrifying to me. It's one thing to make you afraid of the cold and desolated cosmic void, but you'll never look at an ant the same way after reading The Forest. I still have so many things to say about Occultation and Other Storiesbut I have to stop myself before getting embarrassingly Occultation: And Other Stories about it. Other stories I deeply enjoyed in the collection are: The BroadswordMysterium Tremendum and the closer Six Six Sixthree stories with clever and nuanced religious undertones. Occultation and Other Stories is another amazing short story collection by Laird Barron. It perhaps wasn't as elating as his latest collection Swift to Chase, but it was published six years before and Barron ages like fine wine. He gets better and better with every book. Read Occultation and Other Stories for Halloween and get creeped out. Occultation and Other Stories by Laird Barron. After a passionate sexual interlude following a chance reunion in an Indian tourist town, they make their way to a disco off the beaten path. After drinking themselves almost into oblivion, they hear of a chance to see a Van Iblis exhibition. Unauthorized installations, libelous materials, health code violations. A few of the other stories make it clear that Barron is doing for the Pacific Northwest what H. Lovecraft did for New England except that Barron is a better writer. There are Old Ones living in the forests, and they mean us no good. One particular site catches his eye: a dolmen on Mystery Mountain. It sounds to him like an ideal place to explore. Gargantuan tendrils slithered in the dark, coiling and uncoiling, and the denizens of the underworld arrived in an interminable procession through vermiculate tubes and tunnels, and gathered, chuckling and Occultation: And Other Stories, in appreciation of his agonies. In the great and abiding Occultation: And Other Stories, a sea of dead Occultation: And Other Stories faces brightened and Occultation: And Other Stories like porcelain masks at a grotesque ball. Disclosure: I met Laird Barron at the Occultation: And Other Stories Octoberand had a burger with him and , another fairly new horror writer who is equally talented in a completely different way. Anyway, I think this is why Barron named me in his acknowledgments at the front of this book, and I am honored.
