He also spoke bitterly of colleagues “connected with multinationals” who backed provisions inimical to what he called “economic democracy.”1 Brocka quit the commission within four months.     Mendoza / Reinforcing Myths About Women in Philippine Culture 275 REINFORCING MYTHS ABOUT WOMEN IN PHILIPPINE CULTURE Semiotic Analyses of the Sexbomb Girls in Eat Bulaga’s Laban o Bawi Trina Leah Mendoza University of the Philippines Los Baños [email protected] Abstract Movie and TV stars are an influential part of Philippine society. Not only do they entertain audiences with their television shows or movies, but their private lives and actions are arguably as interesting to the public. Celebrities and stars are admired, idolized, and looked up to by many of their followers, such that their values and actions can greatly influence their fans. However, their images may hold various meanings that are not evident to many people. This study analyzes a group of unconventional stars that changed the landscape of noontime viewing—the Sexbomb Girls—using a semiotic approach. It seeks to reveal the different images of women portrayed by the Sexbomb Girls, and understand how media can reinforce myths. The Sexbomb Girls were a social phenomenon and a product of production that depicted binary oppositions and metaphors: virgin/vamp, loud woman, and ordinary woman. These signs, binary oppositions, and metaphors served as myths that naturalized, influenced, and reinforced sexy female background dancers into becoming an ordinary part of noontime and game shows. Because they appeared six days a week in Eat Bulaga, the Sexbomb Girls have desensitized the Filipino masses such that seeing sexily clad background dancers in these shows has become ordinary and acceptable. The show has then moved to ABC 5. Although its move to another TV network and the characteristics of its subsequent format deserve a separate paper, it can be said that the discursive language utilized by game shows rarewly deviate from the formulaic and profit-driven logic systemic to the media industry. This paper offers not only a specific mode of knowing and assessment of a particular television text (Wowowee) but also a theoretical grid and lens that might aid future scholars of television studies and popular culture who aim to dismantle the ramification of apolitical theorizations in the field of academic warfare and media criticism. I aim to problematize how televisual imageries, mediated significations, and regimes of discourses in television articulate a deodorized and depoliticized rendering of specific societal contradictions experienced by the broad masses through poverty, underdevelopment, and injustice. Coming from this theoretical position, I aim to show how the “culture industry,” such as the show Wowowee, legitimizes and authenticates existing power relations and modes of domination between contending classes in Philippine society.

    Resistance Dynamics and Social Movement Theory Conditions, Mechanisms, and Effects BY D.W. LEE Understanding Current Conflicts Contemporary conflicts have become more transnational, protracted, irregular, and resistance- centric.1 They can be best described as protracted internal conflicts with multiple state actors and nonstate actors intervening much like the multidimensional hybrid operational environment discussed in Army Special Operations Forces (ARSOF) 2022.2 This article aims to explain how to harness the emerging strategic utility of nonstate actors by utilizing well-established bodies of knowledge on resistance dynamics. This objective is based upon the observation that an increasing number of external state actors overtly or covertly inter- vene in intrastate conflicts by exploiting the environment’s resistance potential in order to increase their respective strategic influence.3 Similarly, both internal and external nonstate actors take advantage of interstate conflicts or political instability stemming from failing states. The current conflicts in Iraq and Syria certainly meet this characterization; as do those in Ukraine, Yemen, Afghanistan, Somalia, Mali, and Libya. More state actors are supporting or sponsoring political movements in intrastate conflict, making the termination of fighting very difficult. For instance, the resilience of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) is largely attributed to the pro- tracted Syrian civil war in which regional powers such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey all spon- sor local movements. In addition, external nonstate actors such as ISIL, al-Nusrah, and Hezbollah are also deeply involved in the conflict. In other words, these current conflicts represent a sample of a larger shift in warfare.
