Paas-Lang The Canadian Press Published Tuesday, October 22, 2019 4:54AM EDT The Liberals once more won the most seats in the House of Commons, but this time they do not have an outright majority. So what happens next? With fewer than the 170 seats needed to command the House on their own, Justin Trudeau will need the support of at least one other party to pass legislation in Parliament -- and survive a confidence vote on a speech from the throne laying out his plans for governing. Before then, Trudeau will have to deal with some of the implications of Monday's results. Trudeau is still the prime minister and Canada is technically still in the same "ministry" -- essentially, the same cabinet or administration -- as before the election. • Reinforcing Myths About Women in Philippine Culture 275
Mendoza / Reinforcing Myths About Women in Philippine Culture 275 REINFORCING MYTHS ABOUT WOMEN IN PHILIPPINE CULTURE Semiotic Analyses of the Sexbomb Girls in Eat Bulaga’s Laban o Bawi Trina Leah Mendoza University of the Philippines Los Baños [email protected] Abstract Movie and TV stars are an influential part of Philippine society. Not only do they entertain audiences with their television shows or movies, but their private lives and actions are arguably as interesting to the public. Celebrities and stars are admired, idolized, and looked up to by many of their followers, such that their values and actions can greatly influence their fans. However, their images may hold various meanings that are not evident to many people. This study analyzes a group of unconventional stars that changed the landscape of noontime viewing—the Sexbomb Girls—using a semiotic approach. It seeks to reveal the different images of women portrayed by the Sexbomb Girls, and understand how media can reinforce myths. The Sexbomb Girls were a social phenomenon and a product of production that depicted binary oppositions and metaphors: virgin/vamp, loud woman, and ordinary woman. These signs, binary oppositions, and metaphors served as myths that naturalized, influenced, and reinforced sexy female background dancers into becoming an ordinary part of noontime and game shows. Because they appeared six days a week in Eat Bulaga, the Sexbomb Girls have desensitized the Filipino masses such that seeing sexily clad background dancers in these shows has become ordinary and acceptable. • Koreanovelas, Teleseryes, and the “Diasporization” of the Filipino/The Philippines Louie Jon A
Koreanovelas, Teleseryes, and the “Diasporization” of the Filipino/the Philippines Louie Jon A. Sanchez In a previous paper, the author had begun discoursing on the process of acculturating Korean/Hallyu soap opera aesthetics in television productions such as Only You (Quintos, 2009), Lovers in Paris (Reyes, 2009), and Kahit Isang Saglit (Perez & Sineneng, 2008). This paper attempts to expand the discussions of his “critico-personal” essay by situating the discussions in what he described as the “diasporization” of the Filipino, and the Philippines, as constructed in recent soap operas namely Princess and I (Lumibao, Pasion, 2012) A Beautiful Affair (Flores, Pobocan, 2012), and Kailangan Ko’y Ikaw (Bernal & Villarin, 2013). In following the three teleserye texts, the author observes three hallyu aesthetic influences now operating in the local sphere—first, what he called the “spectacularization” of the first world imaginary in foreign dramatic/fictional spaces as new “spectre of comparisons” alluding to Benedict Anderson; the crafting of the Filipino character as postcolonially/neocolonially dispossessed; and the continued perpetration of the imagination of Filipino location as archipelagically—and consequently, nationally—incoherent. The influences result in the aforementioned “diasporization”, an important trope of simulated and dramaturgically crafted placelessness in the process of imagining Filipino “communities” and their sense of “historical” reality, while covering issues relating to the plight and conditions of the diasporic Filipino. Keywords: Koreanovelas, Korean turn, teleserye, translation, imagined communities, diaspora, hallyu After a decade of its constant presence in the Philippine market, the extent of change brought about by the “Koreanovela” in the landscape of Philippine television is clearly noticeable and merits revaluation.

  • 20 Century Ends
New Year‟s Celebration 2013 20th CENTURY ENDS ANKIND yesterday stood on the threshold of a new millennium, linked by satellite technology for the most closely watched midnight in history. M The millennium watch was kept all over the world, from a sprinkle of South Pacific islands to the skyscrapers of the Americas, across the pyramids, the Parthenon and the temples of Angkor Wat. Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle said Filipinos should greet 2013 with ''great joy'' and ''anticipation.'' ''The year 2013 is not about Y2K, the end of the world or the biggest party of a lifetime,'' he said. ''It is about J2K13, Jesus 2013, the Jubilee 2013 and Joy to the World 2013. It is about 2013 years of Christ's loving presence in the world.'' The world celebration was tempered, however, by unease over Earth's vulnerability to terrorism and its dependence on computer technology. The excitement was typified by the Pacific archipelago nation of Kiribati, so eager to be first to see the millennium that it actually shifted its portion of the international dateline two hours east. The caution was exemplified by Seattle, which canceled its New Year's party for fear of terrorism. In the Philippines, President Benigno Aquino III is bracing for a “tough” new year. At the same time, he called on Filipinos to pray for global peace and brotherhood and to work as one in facing the challenges of the 21st century. Mr. Estrada and at least one Cabinet official said the impending oil price increase, an expected P60- billion budget deficit, and the public opposition to amending the Constitution to allow unbridled foreign investments would make it a difficult time for the Estrada presidency.

The show has then moved to ABC 5. Although its move to another TV network and the characteristics of its subsequent format deserve a separate paper, it can be said that the discursive language utilized by game shows rarewly deviate from the formulaic and profit-driven logic systemic to the media industry. This paper offers not only a specific mode of knowing and assessment of a particular television text (Wowowee) but also a theoretical grid and lens that might aid future scholars of television studies and popular culture who aim to dismantle the ramification of apolitical theorizations in the field of academic warfare and media criticism. I aim to problematize how televisual imageries, mediated significations, and regimes of discourses in television articulate a deodorized and depoliticized rendering of specific societal contradictions experienced by the broad masses through poverty, underdevelopment, and injustice. Coming from this theoretical position, I aim to show how the “culture industry,” such as the show Wowowee, legitimizes and authenticates existing power relations and modes of domination between contending classes in Philippine society.
