Overview Euphorbia misera, native to Mexico and the United States of America, has been listed in CITES Appendix II since 1975. According to CITES trade data, international trade does not appear to be a factor affecting the status of this species. We are proposing to delete this species from the CITES Appendices. Since listing, there has been minimal CITES-recorded international trade (1 shipment of 5 artificially propagated specimens from the United States in the 1990s). The species is intrinsically vulnerable to extinction due to its limited and fragmented distribution and low reproductive output. Euphorbia misera is used medicinally in Mexico, which use appears to be highly localized. Membership Kathy Fewox HCSS celebrated its anniversary on July 24, 2019 by having a potluck dinner. Seventeen members attended the meeting. There was lots of wonderful food to enjoy, and good company. Cindy Gray donated four Tephro- cactus plants, two for the raffle and two as door prizes. Our meeting on August 28 was attended by nineteen members who braved the threat of rain and flooding to reach the Multi-Service Center. Most of us managed to get there with little trouble, as the worst of the rain had moved south of the 610 loop by about 6:30 p.m. However, Robert Smith got stuck in rain-delayed traffic on his trip in from Highlands, and didn’t arrive until the meeting was officially over. Also attending were four guests: Chris Balshaw, Aditi Nabar, Ziona Burkett (a Florida friend of BonnieJean Grady’s), and Mariela Hiraldo (daughter of Alan Schachter). Dave Thomas donated a Carnegiea gigantea (Giant Saguaro) as a door prize. It isn’t giant yet, but winner Frank Lee is hoping it will grow into its name. -

Vidal (Guest-Editors), Development of Continental Crust through Geological Time, Chem. Geol., 83: 325- 338. A 500-km north-south alignment of granitic intrusions cross-cuts the central part of the Silo Francisco craton. These late- to post-tectonic granitic bodies are emplaced between two Archean blocks (Jequi~ and Gaviio blocks) and cross-cut the Contendas Mirante volcano-sedimentary sequence and the metasedimentary rocks of the Serra de Jacobina. They are two-mica or muscovite-garnet-bearing peraluminous granites. Rb-Sr systematics show that these granites were emplaced during the Transamazonian orogeny ( ~ 1.9 Ga). The high initial STSr/86Sr ratios (0.706-0.748) and the very low £'Nd(t) ( -- 13 to -5) indicate a crustal origin. The possible sources are: ( 1 ) the Jequi6 block; (2) the Contendas Mirante sequence; and (3) the Gaviio block, including some early Archean domes [trondhjemitie-tonalitic-granodioritic (TTG), Boa Vista type ] which were tectonically emplaced within the vol- cano-sedimentary sequence. -

Na região existem 55 municípios produtores de mamona, e a cidade de Candeias será o destino do óleo vegetal produzido, em razão da instalação da unidade de produção de biodiesel da PETROBRAS. Com a finalidade de garantir a participação da agricultura familiar, o estudo considera unidades de processamento de pequena escala, com capacidades de processamento de 7,5 e 22,5 toneladas/dia de mamona. Para a solução, desenvolveu-se um modelo matemático, utilizando o software XPRESS MP Release, 2007, considerando as produções nos municípios, as distâncias entre as áreas de produção agrícola e as cidades candidatas ao esmagamento, e destas até a usina de produção de biodiesel. Como resultado, obteve-se a indicação de oito cidades potenciais para instalação de plantas de produção de óleo vegetal, de forma a minimizar o custo logístico. LAS PEÑAS1 Summary: DNA content and pattern of ribosomal genes in the monotypic genus Stetsonia (Cactaceae). Stetsonia coryne is a tree is tree-sized plant, with large and infundibuliform flowers (12 -15 cm). It is native to the deserts of northwestern Argentina and Bolivia, and is the only species of the genus Stetsonia. The aim of this study was to characterize this species cytologically. For this, the nuclear DNA content, chromosome number, karyotype, banding patterns and location of ribosomal genes of the species was determined. The DNA content analysis revealed a mixture of nuclei with three peaks, 2C, 4C and 8C, indicating a process of endopoliploidy on the species, being this the first report for the tribe Browningieae. It presented chromosome number of 2n = 22, with a symmetrical karyotype of 22 m, with the first pair with satellite. With fluorescent chromosome banding technique, two types of bands were observed: CMA+/ DAPI- associated centromere and NOR associated. With FISH technique, we observed that 18-5.8-26S loci were consistent with CMA+/DAPI-/NORs blocks. The signal for the 5S gene is located in a centromeric region (pair 10). Woody Minnich 2016 South Africa is considered by many to be the richest region in the world for flowering plants. Within South Africa’s many environments, there is no more enchanted and succulent rich area than that of the Richtersveld. From the coastal fog fed regions to the higher mountains, one can find an amazing diversity of geophytic, miniature and giant species. The areas we will be exploring are from the south near Springbok up to the Richtersveld and the Orange River, and then slightly north into the deserts of Namibia, Namaqualand. This northern portion of South Africa is also sometimes referred to as the Namaqualand. The original peoples from this general landscape were referred as the Nama. Their homeland environments were quite variable ranging from the very arid inland hills and mountains to the cooler foggy coastal sand dunes. The Nama were a rather nomadic people and thus lived in almost all of these different geologic settings. Rumors have it that the Nama people, when at war with neighboring tribes, would dress the Pachypodium namaquanum’s with hats and robes thus making it appear as if their armies were of greater number. These dressed up plants were referred to as the Halfmens. -
