Smolina* Siberian Federal University 79 Svobodny, Krasnoyarsk, 660041, Russia Received 15.07.2014, received in revised form 10.10.2014, accepted 01.12.2014 The subject of this article is the reflection of the Siberian indigenous people, the Kets (or so called “the Ostyaks”) in works by D.I. Karatanov. The aim of the research is achieved by analysis of individual features of these works – portraits, landscapes and many-figured scenes of everyday life. In this research were used such methods as structural and semantic analysis of art works, revelation and analysis of main compositional patterns, consideration of immanation and emanation parts of an artistic image. Following the results of the research, work plays the role of a fore-praying to the nature in the life of Kets fishermen. The result can be used in art sphere of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, history and culture of the Siberian Region and in researches dedicated to national and cultural identity. By creating large temporal variation in resource availability between seasons it becomes challenging for carnivores to secure a regular year-round supply of food. Some predators may respond by following their migratory prey, however, most predators are sedentary and experience strong seasonal variation in resource availability. Increased predation on alternative prey may dampen such seasonal resource fluctuations, but reduced reproduction rates in predators is a predicted consequence of migratory primary prey behavior that has received little empirical attention. We used data from 23 GPS collared Eurasian lynx Lynx lynx monitored during 2007–2013 in northern Norway, to examine how spatio-temporal variation in the migratory behavior of semi-domestic reindeer Rangifer tarandus influences lynx spatial organization and reproductive success using estimates of seasonal home range overlap and breeding success. -

Ohio J. Science ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION 101 Climatic Summary of Snowfall and Snow Depth in the Ohio Snowbelt at Chardon1 THOMAS W. SCHMIDLIN, Geography Department and Water Resources Research Institute, Kent State University, Kent, OH 44242 ABSTRACT. Snowfall records were examined for the period 1945-85 at Chardon, OH, the only station with a long climatic record in the snowbelt. Average seasonal snowfall was 269 cm (106 in) with a seasonal maxi- mum of 410 cm (161 in). Seasonal snowfall was positively correlated with other sites in the lower Great Lakes snowbelts and along the western slope of the Appalachians from Tennessee to Quebec, but was not correlated with snowfall in the snowbelts of the upper Lakes. The time series of seasonal snowfall was not random but showed weak year-to-year persistence. The average number of days with 2.5 cm (1 in) of snow- fall was 35. The average dates of the first and last 2.5 cm snowfalls of the winter were 10 November and 4 April. The largest two-day snowfall of the winter averaged 33 cm. The average number of days with 2.5 cm of snow cover was 82. Daily probability of snow cover reached the seasonal maximum of 86% in mid-January and early February. These results may be reasonably extrapolated throughout the Ohio snow- belt for applications in vegetation studies, animal ecology, hydrology, soil science, recreation, and transpor- tation studies. Reconstructing Proto-Ugric and Proto-Uralic Object Marking Katalin É. Kiss ([email protected]) Research Institute for Linguistics of the Hungarian Academy and Pázmány P. University Abstract This paper demonstrates that syntactic changes in the feature specifications of functional heads can be traced back to undocumented stages of languages. It reconstructs the object–verb relation in Proto-Uralic – by means of the comparative method adapted to syntax. Present-day Uralic languages display differential object–verb agreement and/or differential accusative marking. In double-marking languages, the head licensing object–verb agreement may be different from that licensing accusative-marking. The licensing conditions of object marking are also different across languages. It is argued that the Uralic parent language had both object-verb agreement and accusative assignment licensed by a TP-external functional head with a [topic] feature. The [topic] feature of this head has been reanalyzed as [specific] in Udmurt, and as [definite] in Hungarian – via a natural extention of the content of the notion of topicality. In languages with generalized accusative assignment, i.e., in Hungarian and Tundra Nenets, the licensing of object agreement and accusative marking have been divorced; the latter has come to be associated with v. Hood Road, Starkville, MS 39762, USA; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract: As the mesoscale dynamics of lake-effect snow (LES) are becoming better understood, recent and ongoing research is beginning to focus on the large-scale environments conducive to LES. Synoptic-scale composites are constructed for Lake Michigan and Lake Superior LES events by employing an LES case repository for these regions within the U.S. North American Regional Reanalysis (NARR) data for each LES event were used to construct synoptic maps of dominant LES patterns for each lake. These maps were formulated using a previously implemented composite technique that blends principal component analysis with a k-means cluster analysis. A sample case from each resulting cluster was also selected and simulated using the Advanced Weather Research and Forecast model to obtain an example mesoscale depiction of the LES environment. The study revealed four synoptic setups for Lake Michigan and three for Lake Superior whose primary differences were discrepancies in a surface pressure dipole structure previously linked with Great Lakes LES. These subtle synoptic-scale differences suggested that while overall LES impacts were driven more by the mesoscale conditions for these lakes, synoptic-scale conditions still provided important insight into the character of LES forcing mechanisms, primarily the steering flow and air–lake thermodynamics. It is also known as the European lynx, common lynx, the northern lynx, and the Siberian or Russian lynx. While its conservation status has been classified as "Least Concern", populations of Eurasian lynx have been reduced or extirpated from western Europe, where it is now being reintroduced. Physical characteristics The Eurasian lynx is the largest lynx species, ranging in length from 80 to 130 cm (31 to 51 in) and standing about 70 cm (28 in) at the shoulder. The tail measures 11 to 25 cm (4.3 to 9.8 in) in length. Males usually weigh from 18 to 30 kg (40 to 66 lb) and females weigh 10 to 21 kg (22 to 46 lb).[3] [4] [5] Male lynxes from Siberia, where the species reaches the largest body size, can weigh up to 38 kg (84 lb) or reportedly even 45 kg (99 lb).[6] [7] It has powerful legs, with large webbed and furred paws that act like snowshoes. It also possesses a short "bobbed" tail with an all-black tip, black tufts of hair on its ears, and a long grey-and-white ruff. -

How to use the Atlas The Atlas has two map sections The Main Section shows the location of Russia’s intact forest landscapes. The Thematic Section shows their tree species composition in two different ways. The legend is placed at the beginning of each set of maps. If you are looking for an area near a town or village Go to the Index on page 153 and find the alphabetical list of settlements by English name. The Cyrillic name is also given along with the map page number and coordinates (latitude and longitude) where it can be found. Capitals of regions and districts (raiony) are listed along with many other settlements, but only in the vicinity of intact forest landscapes. The reader should not expect to see a city like Moscow listed. Villages that are insufficiently known or very small are not listed and appear on the map only as nameless dots. If you are looking for an administrative region Go to the Index on page 185 and find the list of administrative regions. The numbers refer to the map on the inside back cover. Having found the region on this map, the reader will know which index map to use to search further. If you are looking for the big picture Go to the overview map on page 35. This map shows all of Russia’s Intact Forest Landscapes, along with the borders and Roman numerals of the five index maps. If you are looking for a certain part of Russia Find the appropriate index map. These show the borders of the detailed maps for different parts of the country. -
