The beach is surrounded by many fish restaurants, with a long wooden pier stretching out into the sea. It is ideal for walking. 1200 Set your watch at the Lighthouse in Nowy Port The Time Sphere is lowered from the mast at the top of the historic brick lighthouse at 12:00, 14:00, 16:00 and 18:00 sharp. It used to serve ship masters to regulate their navigation instruments. Today it’s just a tourist attraction, but it’s well worth visiting; what is more, the open gallery at the top provides a splendid view of the mouth of the River Vistula and Westerplatte. 1300 Take a ride on the F5 water tram to Westerplatte and Wisłoujście Fortress Nowy Port and the environs of the old mouth of the Vistula at the Bay of Gdańsk have many attractions.

The name “Poland” originates from the tribe “Polanie” which means “people living in open fields”. 2 3 Westerplatte Quay Westerplatte Quay, where cruise ships moor, is a unique place, thanks to its location in the direct vicinity of the port’s entrance. This reduces to a minimum the time required for docking. In terms of tourism, arriving passengers can get to one of the most valuable historic buildings in Gdańsk – the Wisłoujście Fortress within 5 min- utes, and to the Memorial to the Westerplatte Defenders situated within 5 minutes walking distance from the quay. It was here that on 1 September 1939 World War II began, with the shelling of West- erplatte by the Nazi battleship Schleswig-Holstein. Cruise ships dock right at the foot of the monumental Memorial to the Westerplatte Defenders raised as a commemoration of those events.

    Foreword The Board of the AMBERIF Fair appreciates that research is necessary for the jewellery industry, with amber as its main focus, to develop. This awareness has brought yet again a published volume as its concrete effect and this year it is a piece fitting for the Gdańsk event’s 20th anniversary. The AMBER. RESEARCH—COLLECTIONS—THE MARKET Symposium, the proceedings of which we now give you, enriches the knowledge about amber presented by the symposium contributors at very diverse lengths. These are both short abstracts and papers longer than can be presented during the symposium itself. 32 speakers and 22 contributors behind the poster submissions are not all. The co–authors almost double this number. Today, in view of the enormous methodological possibilities and equipment available only in some laboratories – for more complex subjects – it is important to gather a good research team. These are people of science, collectors or just simply amber lovers. Professor Dany Azar’s paper introduces us to the state of the art in the RESEARCH on fossil resins in the world. And then there is a large dose of knowledge about the Eocene deposits of amber (=succinite) around the Baltic Sea, in Ukraine and in Saxony–Anhalt. Plus deposits which are of the same age but of different type in Fushun, the much older deposits of Cretaceous fossil resin in Myanmar (Burma) and for the first time also from Lebanon’s Upper Jurassic sediments. From the perspective of the temporary shortage of raw amber on the market, we consider with interest the predominantly literature–based research on succinite redeposited in the Quaternary Age and the 19th century methods of its production.

These symbolic silhouettes certainly include the massive brick bulk of St Mary’s Basilica towering over the city, the rich Renaissance facades of the houses around the Long Market and the statue of Neptune reigning over what is acclaimed as one of the most beautiful market places in Europe. On 8 July 1552 King Sigismund Augustus arrived in the city with two thousand courtiers; on 1 August 1677 King Jan III Sobieski made a ceremonious entry into the city accompanied by his wife, UplandMarysieƒka, and son Jacob.Gate 1 2 Upland Gate (1) This richly sculpted 16th century stone gate to Gdaƒsk marks the beginning of the Royal Route. It was here that the mighty of this world were first met by the cheering crowds on their arrival.

Początkowo zapisywano je po łacinie, później po niemiecku, niekiedy po polsku. Do 1945 r. obowiązywały w wersji niemieckiej. Po powrocie do Polski nowe władze miasta opracowywały nazwy polskie. W historycznym Śródmieściu na ogół oparto się na starych nazwach, tłumacząc je lub wprowadzając nawiązujące do nich odpowiedniki. Nie ustrzeżono się błędów, ale ogólnie można stwierdzić, że na 244 nazwy ulic 176 (72 proc.) pochodzi sprzed rozbiorów Polski, w tym 75 (31 proc.) - sprzed 1500 r. W porównaniu z innymi miastami Polski jest to wynik dobry, świadczący o poszanowaniu wielokulturowej historii. W pozostałych dzielnicach jest z tym gorzej. Zajrzyjmy do Nowego Portu. Główna arteria powstała z dawnej drogi do Oliwy (1821 Weg nach Oliva) - ul. Oliwska (Olivaer Strasse), zachowała dawną nazwę. Starszy od niej trakt wiódł od prastarej stacji rybackiej na jeziorze Zaspa i siedziby zarządzających nią mistrzów rybackich, tzw. rybickich, do karczmy nad Wisłą. Gdy w początkach XX w. stał się ulicą, nazywano ją Drogą Rybickich (Fischmeisterweg). Niestety po 1945 r. przekreślono 700-letnią historię, przemianowując ją na "Wyzwolenia". Czasami chciano zachować nazwę, ale nie rozumiano jej i wychodziło nieporozumienie. Tak było z ul. Młyńską (1821 Mühlengasse, później Mühlenstrasse), prowadzącą do wiatraka młyna, zbudowanego w 1810 r. na Górze Młyńskiej (Mühlenberg). Było to wzniesienie między ulicami: Górską (1821 Berggasse), dzisiejszą Władysława IV, i Kościelną (Kirchenstrasse, potem Hedwigkirchstrasse) - dziś ks. Góreckiego, prowadzącą do zbudowanego w 1858 r.

    AFTER THE EXPULSIONS: THE LOST GERMAN HEIMAT IN MEMORY, MONUMENTS AND MUSEUMS Jenny Graaf, MA, MBA Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy MARCH 2014 2 ABSTRACT This comparative thesis explores how museums and monuments in postwar east and west Germany commemorate the eastern territories that were lost after 1945. I focus on the concept of Heimat which spans aesthetics and politics, psychological and political identity and emerges from a condition of loss, thus it features highly in my attempt to understand the development and current state of memorialisation. The centrality of the notion of Heimat in expellee memorialisation is a field as yet little explored in research on the expulsions, particularly in east Germany. Following chapters on the historical context, Heimat, and cultural memory, Chapter Three discusses monuments erected between 1947 and 1989 by expellees who resettled in West Germany which are used to mourn, replace, reflect on and revere the old Heimat. I compare post-unification west and east German memorials, discussing key differences resulting from the former taboo on expellee commemoration in East Germany. I additionally examine changing sites of memory, memorials that illustrate a shifting integration process and investigate the use of symbolism. Chapter Four considers the interaction between eyewitnesses, historians and curators in the portrayal of history in museums and Heimatstuben at Görlitz, Greifswald, Lüneburg, Regensburg, Molfsee, Gehren, Rendsburg and Altenburg, in addition to the Altvaterturm in Thuringia. Chapter Five discusses the contentious Berlin Stiftung Flucht Vertreibung Versöhnung Centre, first mooted in 1999 by the Bund der Vertriebenen as a Centre against Expulsions.
