AFTER THE EXPULSIONS: THE LOST GERMAN HEIMAT IN MEMORY, MONUMENTS AND MUSEUMS Jenny Graaf, MA, MBA Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy MARCH 2014 2 ABSTRACT This comparative thesis explores how museums and monuments in postwar east and west Germany commemorate the eastern territories that were lost after 1945. I focus on the concept of Heimat which spans aesthetics and politics, psychological and political identity and emerges from a condition of loss, thus it features highly in my attempt to understand the development and current state of memorialisation. The centrality of the notion of Heimat in expellee memorialisation is a field as yet little explored in research on the expulsions, particularly in east Germany. Following chapters on the historical context, Heimat, and cultural memory, Chapter Three discusses monuments erected between 1947 and 1989 by expellees who resettled in West Germany which are used to mourn, replace, reflect on and revere the old Heimat. I compare post-unification west and east German memorials, discussing key differences resulting from the former taboo on expellee commemoration in East Germany. I additionally examine changing sites of memory, memorials that illustrate a shifting integration process and investigate the use of symbolism. Chapter Four considers the interaction between eyewitnesses, historians and curators in the portrayal of history in museums and Heimatstuben at Görlitz, Greifswald, Lüneburg, Regensburg, Molfsee, Gehren, Rendsburg and Altenburg, in addition to the Altvaterturm in Thuringia. Chapter Five discusses the contentious Berlin Stiftung Flucht Vertreibung Versöhnung Centre, first mooted in 1999 by the Bund der Vertriebenen as a Centre against Expulsions. The tension between ‘German victims’ and ‘victims of the Germans’ is a recurring theme in this thesis. My conclusions highlight how memorialisation 3 is framed clearly within the contemporary socio-political context, demonstrate the durability and flexibility of the term Heimat and illustrate the resilience of the regard for the lost territories, not only for expellees; the idea of the German East persists in German cultural memory. 4 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank the Arts and Humanities Research Council for providing funding for this project. Wer die Zeitungen liest, kann es sicher nicht verpasst haben: in Dresden wird seit Oktober 2014 wöchentlich gegen den Islam und die Islamisierung Deutschlands und Europa demonstriert. Diese Protestbewegung nennt sich “Patriotische Europäer gegen die Islamisierung des Abendlandes”, kurz Pegida. Vor einem Jahr war alles noch ruhig in Dresden. Die Teilnehmerzahl der Demonstrationen wuchs aber schnell. Anfangs war die Teilnehmeranzahl noch relativ gering. Am 3. November lag sie auf ca. 1000. Am 8. Dezember lag sie schon auf 10.000, am 12. Januar sogar auf 25.000.1 Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich damit, wie die deutsche Zeitung Die Zeit in dem Zeitraum von Dezember 2014 bis Ende April 2015 über Pegida geschrieben hat. Die Zeit ist eine deutsche Wochenzeitung, die sich selbst als liberal bezeichnet.

The son of the Jewish Communist playwright Friedrich Wolf and the brother of Markus Wolf— the head of the GDR‘s Foreign Intelligence Agency—Konrad Wolf was exiled in Moscow during the Nazi era and returned to Germany as a Red Army soldier by the end of World War Two. This article examines Wolf‘s 1968 autobiographical film I was Nineteen (Ich war Neunzehn), which narrates the final days of World War II—and the initial formation of postwar reality—from the point of view of an exiled German volunteer in the Soviet Army. In analyzing Wolf‘s portrayals of the German landscape, I argue that he used the audio- visual clichés of Heimat-symbolism in order to undermine the sense of a homogenous and apolitical community commonly associated with this concept. Thrown out of their original contexts, his displaced Heimat images negotiate a sense of a heterogeneous community, which assumes multi-layered identities and highlights the shared ideology rather than the shared origins of the members of the national community.

At first glance, this term is an appeal to the revolutionary mass- es of the National Socialist revolution in a way that demarcates a distinction between the rootedness of the German People (capital “P”) and the rootlessness of the modern rabble (or people). But this distinction is not a sufficient explanation of Heidegger’s position, because Heidegger simultaneously seems to hold that even the Germans are characterized by a lack of identity. What is required is a further appropriation of the proper. My suggestion is that this logic of the Volk is not only useful for understanding Heidegger’s thought during the war, but also an indication of what happened after he lost faith in the National Socialist movement and thus had to make the lack of the People the basis of his thought. Keywords Heidegger – Nazism – Schwarze Hefte – Black Notebooks – Volk – people Introduction In § 74 of Sein und Zeit, Heidegger introduces the notorious term “the People” [das Volk]. For Heidegger, this term functions as the intersection between phi- losophy and politics and, consequently, it preoccupies him throughout the turbulent years from the National Socialist revolution in 1933 to the end of WWII in 1945. The shift from individual Dasein to the Dasein of the German People has often been noted as the very point at which Heidegger’s fundamen- tal ontology intersects with his disastrous political views.

After presenting the theoretical basis for this report, which builds on an earlier project’s publication (Doomernik & Ardon 2018) and is enriched by the empirical findings of the CEASEVAL research that connects the relevance of a local perspective with an analysis and review of alternative forms of shaping the Common European Asylum System. To transform the CEAS into a sustainable and equitable common asylum and migration framework this report points towards three possible fundamental changes that might make the CEAS more sustainable and foster equity.

In fact, his seminal works on German politics, German history, collective memory, anti-Americanism, and sports influenced me intellectually even before I arrived in Ann Arbor.     Herbert Czaja zum 100. Geburtstag am 5. November 2014 von Hartmut Koschyk MdB Die drei großen christdemokratischen Politiker und gemeinhin als Gründerväter des politisch geeinten Europas angesehenen Staatsmänner Konrad Adenauer, Alcide de Gasperi und Robert Schuman hatten zwei große Gemeinsamkeiten: Zum einen waren die drei praktizierenden Katholiken zutiefst in ihrem christlichen Glauben verwurzelt, der für sie auch ethische Grundlage und Richtschnur ihres politischen Handelns war. Zum anderen stammten sie jeweils aus Grenzgebieten: Konrad Adenauer wurde in Köln geboren und sein politisches Wirken war als Oberbürgermeister von Köln und Vorsitzender des Provinzialausschusses der Rheinprovinz bis 1933 aufs Engste mit diesem über Jahrhunderte zwischen Deutschland und Frankreich umstrittenen Gebiet verbunden. Der Italiener Alcide de Gasperi wurde 1881 in der Nähe der damals österreichischen Stadt Trient geboren und vertrat ab 1911 bzw. 1914 das heimatliche Trentino im österreichischen Reichsrat und im Landtag von Tirol. Robert Schuman wurde 1886 im luxemburgischen Clausen geboren und ließ sich nach seinem Studium im damals deutschen Metz nieder, nach 1918 ging er für die Region Lothringen in die französische Politik. Diese Grenzgebiete waren oft Anlass zu politischen Streit und kriegerischen Auseinandersetzungen, immer aber auch vermittelnde Brücken zwischen zwei benachbarten, zeitweise feindselig gegeneinander stehenden Völkern. Interkulturelle Prägung Die Parallelen zum Leben von Herbert Czaja sind unverkennbar. Die im katholischen Elternhaus angenommenen sittlichen Prinzipien und ethischen Grundüberzeugungen ließen ihn immun gegen das Gift des Nationalsozialismus werden. Geboren wurde er am 5. November 1914 in dem damals zu Österreichisch-Schlesien gehörenden 1 Städtchen Teschen. Kaum irgendwo sonst dürfte der seit 1740 bestehende österreichisch-preußische Gegensatz so stark zu spüren gewesen sein wie hier.
