CONDER, C.R. & H.H.KITCHENER. - MAP OF WESTERN PALESTINE FROM SURVEYS CONDUCTED FOR THE COMMITTEE OF THE PALESTINE EXPLORATION FUND , Edward Stanford 1881 Large folding lithograph map printed in colours, dissected and mounted on linen, folding into marbled endpapers and housed in original cloth box with the publisher’s label. Measures approx. 160cm x 97cm. Bookplate William C Pickersgill. Very good condition. The Palestine Exploration Fund was established in 1865 and was extremely active in the mapping, archaeological and historical exploration of Palestine. They conducted a detailed and high quality survey of Palestine which led to the production of numerous books and maps. This item is one of the key maps produced from the survey. [ref: 18977 ] £950

2. SACHER, HARRY AND LEON SIMON. ZIONIST BANNER - BOUND VOLUME CONTAINING THE FIRST 12 ISSUES Manchester J. Massel & Sons, “The Cheetham Press” 1910 Red cloth, 24cm, 192 pp. Sacher and Simon were both protégés of and went on to draft the . They were both very active in promoting Zionism in the early years. This periodical was published under the title “The Zionist” from 1911 until 1914. This period till the issuance of the Balfour Declaration was a critical period for the Zionist movement. Worldcat list only 2 holdings of this title (British Library and the NLI) [ref: 19023] £280

There is an additional sheet loosely inserted headed “The New Policy is No Answer” which deals with the British Government policy paper issued since the pamphlet was written. “As a Result of the Allied Victory in World War 1 the Arabs received Sovereignty over more than 1,200,000 Square Miles. Palestine constitutes less than 1% of the Total Territory”. A strong plea for the British Government to allow Jews into Palestine. [ref: 18993 ] £185

Fiercely critical pamphlet on the British actions in Palestine. The front cover is in dramatic black with white lettering. It describes many of the search operations carried out by British soldiers such as “Black Sabbath” and the arrest of Rabbi Maimon (Fishman) on the Sabbath – he requested to walk to the police station but was forcibly bundled into a car. Rabbi Maimon was one of the signatories of the Declaration of Israeli Independence and was a member of the first Knesset. [ref: 19019 ] £350

6. CROSSMAN, S. H. R., M.P AND FOOT, MICHAEL, M.P. - A PALESTINE MUNICH? London, Victor Gollancz Ltd. 1946. Original wrappers in the typical Gollancz style, 19cm., 31pp., text in English, overall in very good condition. Evaluates the situation in Palestine from the point of view of the Labour Party. Crossman was appointed to the Anglo-American Committee of Enquiry on Palestine and became a strong supporter of the Zionists. He became a great admirer of Weizmann. [ref: 14405 ] £150

Jeffries worked for Beaverbrook and was an anti-Zionist. This is severely anti-Zionist collection of essays as some of the chapter headings make clear. “Zionist Claims refuted – Phantom Benefits for the Empire” and “National Home for the Jews – Insincerity and Illusion”. Many of the latter were organized outside of Palestine in neighboring Lebanon, Syria and Jordan and also from Iraq. [ref: 19004 ] £275

Slight wear and soiling to dust jacket, overall a very good copy. Land and land rights was always a major issue both under the Ottomans and under the British. Granovsky later Granot was one the experts on this he wrote several pamphlets on the subject. He was also a member of the First Knesset. [ref: 19006 ] £95

Occasional foxing and some age toning. A seminal work on Zionism – a massive history of Zionism until 1918 by one of its foremost proponents and exponents. Extensively illustrated, the appendices reproduce many important source documents. A presentation copy “To Mr and Mrs L Margulies, with compliments of Nahum Sokolow, Paris , 23rd July 1919.” Some small erasure on front free endpaper and title page. Presumably Sokolow was in Paris for the Paris Peace Conference. Some dulling to spine of volume 1. Overall a nice set. [ref: 19034 ] £600

17. ANTIFASISZTA EGYSEG - 7 ISSUES Antifasiszta Egyseg [Anti-fascist unity] Tel Aviv 1947/48 7 individual issues of Antifasiszta Egyseg (an Anti Fascist periodical). Each issue is 16 pp, 25cm. Hungarian-language edition of “Kol-Ha’am”, a communist periodical (presumably from the Palestine Communist Party) on current political and economic matters, published in Tel Aviv. Text in Hungarian. Issues are dated (1947) June 20th, July 11, August 3, August 28, October, November and one from March 1948. A mimeographed magazine. Rare (one copy in Israel). [ref: 4436 ] £180

CZECHOSLOVAK JEWRY PAST AND FUTURE Special Issue On the Occasion of the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic New York Czechoslovak Jewish Representative Committee 1943 Original wrappers, 27cm, 42 pp. Text in English and Czech. There are messages from prominent Jews in London and New York including Stephen S. Wise, Nahum Goldman, S. Brodetsky, Ernest Frischer, Leib Jaffe, Maurice L. Perlzweig, Ignacy Schwarzbart, Ira Sud, L. Zelmanovits. The messages are poignant because of the contemporary destruction of Czechoslovakian Jewry. There are several articles on aspects of Czechoslovakian Jewish history. [ref: 18837 ] £150

A rare photographic record of the Dreyfus Affair. There is one page introduction and the rest of the booklet consists of captioned photographs of the Dreyfus Affair. All the text is in English. 20. KOHLER, MAX - PERSECUTION OF THE JEWS IN GERMANY Printed Opinion Addressed to Hon. Cordell Hull, Secretary of State New York 1933 Original wrappers, 28cm, 12pp. stamped confidential. Worldcat lists one copy at Harvard. A legal opinion relating to the treatment of Jews in Germany. The first part deals with the treatment of American Jewish citizens in Germany and the 2nd part deals with citizens of other countries. Max Kohler (1871-1934) was a US attorney and the son of Dr Kaufmann Kohler who headed the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. [ref: 16876 ] £350

21. KUPPERSTIEN (COOPERSTIEN), LEIB [HOLOCAUST] MEGILLAT STRUMA [SCROLL, STORY OF THE STRUMA] Tel Aviv Organisation of Oleh Rumania B’Eretz Yisrael 1942 Original wrappers, Text in Hebrew, 134 pp. The Struma was a boat carrying about 800 Jewish refugees from Romania to Mandatory Palestine. It arrived in Istanbul in December 1941 but was towed out to the Black Sea and abandoned by the Turkish authorities when it became clear that visas to Palestine would not be granted. The boat sank in February 1942 with only one survivor (David Stollar). At the end there is a letter in English addressed to Sir Harold MacMichael, the High Commissioner of Palestine. Presentation copy from the author to Rabbi Yehudah Leib Maimon, who was a member of the first Knesset and one of the signatories to the Declaration of Independence. Also has Rabbi Maimon’s bookplate (upside-down). [ref: 19008 ] £250

Presentation copy with an ink inscription from the author. The author states “The conquest of Palestine and the fall of Jerusalem has directed the attention of the civilized world to the problem of the Jewish people.” Mrs Davis met Dickens when she purchased his house and thought him a kind man which prompted her to confront him over some of his characters that she felt were anti-Semitic.[ref: 19017] £175

ELDERS OF THE SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE COMMUNITY ASCAMOT OR LAWS AND REGULATIONS OF THE JEWISH CONGREGATION SHAAR HASHAMAIM London Printed by Wertheimer, Leman Street, Goodmans Fields 5591 - 1831 Cloth, iii + 147 pp. The Ascamot were first published in 1785 in Portuguese and in 1819, they were translated into English by order of the Meeting of the Elders (the translation was undertaken by three Gentlemen from their body). This is the first publication in English - Roth refers to this edition and an 1819 edition in Magna page 297 No 8, however I can find no holding of the 1819 edition or reference to it. Neville Laski in his extensive chapter on the printed editions of the Ascamot sees this edition as the outcome of the 1819 translation. See page 29 of The Laws and Charities of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews' Congregation of London. Text in Hebrew with 10 illustrations from drawings made by Hermann Struck. A poem in Hebrew by Zalman Schneur (1887 - 1959) - a Hebrew writer and poet. Illustrated by Hermann Struck (1876 - 1944) A Jewish artist most noted for his etchings. The poem was actually written in 1917 and the drawings were made by Herman Struck in Vilna during the First World War. The poet and artist worked independently. One of a limited edition of 1,700. The illustrations are sepia toned. A bit of wear to cloth, a little piece is worn away on the back board. Previous owner’s stamp on title page. A little bit of foxing and rear hinge is shaken.
