R. BROUGH SMYTH, Secretary for Mines. Office of M~es, ' ~elbourne,l7th January, 1870. 23 MINING SURVEYORS AND REGISTRAR'S REPORTS. BALLARAT MINING DISTRICT. CENTRAL DIVISION.·· Mr. Harrie Wo.od, Mining Registrar. It will be seen by the annexed returns that there is a falling off in the amount of gold obtained, of the divi- • dends paid, and of the number of men employed, during the quarter ending December 31st, 1869. In machinery of all kinds there is no diminution in quantity; but by the standard prescribed by the department there is a large reduction ·in value. · To account for the gradual reduction· in the _yield of, gold at Ballarat, one principal cause is the scarcity of capital, due to large investments by Ballarat capitalists throughout the colony and elsewhere during the last year ; another reason is, that no great success has been obtained as yet in either of two new companies from which much is expected. · There are several progressive mines in operation, among which I may name the Rodney and the Suburban on the north-west, the North Park on the west, the Albion Consols, the Prince Imperial, and the Emperor on the south-west. Besides these there are several others, both alluvial and quartz) in Ballarat East and elsewhere. These mines are in various stages of progress, and there is a very general oonfidence that some of them will be successful. The success of one only will in certain localities open probably to mining enterprise new por~ions of country of great extent. . The St. George and Band of Hope United Company, having added largely to their claim by the purchase of adjoining claims, have been occupied during the last half-year in erecting new machinery and opening up the ground preparatory to regular operations ; the smallness of the yield from their mine for the last quarter is the result. They are now nearly ready to begin regular work, with every prospect of success. The Great Northern Junction Company is now a very successful mine, and although it does not appear in the list of dividend-paying claims, and has suffered considerably from the late f!oo'd, it has made a profit during the quarter of £4,000, of which it has appropriated £3,000 to paying off liabilities. Besides what is sta.tM above, there are many exceptional reasons for the present small returns.in gold. To show, however, that no; want of confidence exists in the locality, I may state that building is going on continuously, and I have learned that more business has been done' by the Saw Mills than in any previous year. · Tu:e following is a statement of the Gold obtained by the principal Mining Companies in this Division for the Quarter ending 31st December, 1869. . j! In this branch of mining there has been a stoppage during the quarter of several prospecting companies ; there is still, however, oonsiderable activity displayed on the Riscock's line of reefs. The average yield per ton has been within a fraction of 4 dwts; . , · ALLUVIAL MINING. ~ On the township, three claims-viz., the· Independent, Innes Freehold, and the Crown Leasehold-are working the gutter, and all obtaining payable yields. On the Durham, the Garibaldi have had some very excellent yields, while southward, in the Enfield, where the wash has widened to about 700 feet, the returns have been poor. The Leviathan. Mr. Thomas Cowan, Mining Surveyor and Registrar. ALLUVIAL MINI::iG. . The depressed state of the .mining market has as seriously affected this as it has other branches Of mining. Little or nothing has been done during the quarter. . . The shallow diggings at the Little Moorabool are for the greater part at a standstill, occupiers of claims holding them in reserve until a more favorable state of the market will enable them to float them. The Dan O'Connell Company are still engaged in sinking their shaft in the reef; they have now reached a depth of 130 feet. In sinking the shaft 40 feet of drift was passed through ; since this was puddled very little wa~r has been met with. A party of 'Chinese have lately returned to All Nations Gully, but I believe they are doing very little. . A party of men are engagel in sluicing the shallow workings on the Moorabool, below Morrow's pre-empt1ve right ; lately with very good results. Amongst smaller nuggets one of 2t ozs. was obtained. The parties working appear to be confident of the good prospects of the ground. The ground where the gold is obtained is partially private property. . . The Cosmopolitan Company is engaged in driving for the gutter, from which a very good prospect was obtamed by the Koh-i-noor Company some time since. The manager expects to reach the gutter in about three weeks. QUARTZ MINING. ' The Egerton Company shows no symptoms oft' falling of from the excellent returns which have been the rule for so long ; druing the quarter a new boiler for the crushing engine has been erected, at a cost of £400. . Black Horse Company have not been very successful hdinding good stone tbis quarter, but the manager states that a very great improvement is expected immediately. . White Horse Company.~The shaft is now down a depth of 550 feet; the sinking has very much increased in difficulty, owing' to the extreme hardness of the country being passed through. As the depth of the shaft increases ' the flow of water becomes greater; the quantity now brought up by the lifts is about 2,000 gallons per hc·ur. The present contract is for sinking the shaft to a depth of 600 feet; it is expected that this depth wiH be reached in about six weeks; drives will then be opened out to the east and west. At 340 feet from the surface a mass of leaders mixed with soft slate was passed through ; the walls were well defined, and about 20 feet apart; no gold was visible in the stone, , The Band of Hope Qompany are still engaged in sinking their shaft ; nothing has transpired ·beyond what was reported last quarter. . Wellesley Company have been engaged during the quarter i)l deepening their shaft, which is now down a depth of 522 feet ; the drive at the 410-foot level has been carried further to the east. The company have abandoned the drive along what was supposed to be the wall of the Black Horse lode. A drive has been put in at the 512-foot level, but as yet is only driven a short distance. The shaft makes about 1,000 gallons per hour. North Egerton Company.-N othing fresh has transpired during the quarter. Egerton Consols Company shaft is now down a depth of 310 feet; sinking very hard, through a blue slate, containing numerous quartz leaders, in several of which gold has been seen. It is not intended to open out the shaft until a greater depth has been reached. The water, ·which is easily kept down by the tanks, amounts to about 800 gallons per hour. , , The Flying Scud Company have opened out to the east and west. At the 500-foot level the eastern drive is in a distance of 130 feet, and the western 150 feet. In the eastern drive, at a distance of about 30 feet from the shaft, a mass of leaders about 50 feet wide was passed through ; the leaders, and the casing round them, contain a very large percentage of copper. The red sandstone, through which for its total depth the shaft was sunk, has disappear€d in the east and west drives, and given place to a brown sandstone, mixed with slate; the appearance of the country has very much improved. - 1 The Ercildoun Company.-During the quarter the company have deepened their shaft to a depth of 397 feet; works have not been pushed on very vigorously, the management finding a great difficulty in getting in their calls. The Emu Company have opened out to the east at the 286-foot level, and struck a lode at a distance of 19 feet from the shaft; the width varies from 1 to 5 feet. The company have opened'up the reef a distance of 115 feet, and have commenced to raise stone ; it is intended to make a trial crushing as soon as the stone is on the surface. The mine makes about 700 gallons of water per hour. · The Vict{)ria Company have not yet succeeded in finding any stone of sufficient richness to pay for working, though both the stone and country show strong signs of improvement. The Kangaroo Bob Company has not entirely realized the expectations which were raised at the close of last quarter; the yields have been very moderate, but I believe an improvement is looked forward to by the manager. Greed's Reef Company.-During the quarter' this company struck_ a very promising reef at a short distance from their shaft ; the reef is of considerable thickness, and in places the stone is rich. 'A trial crushing was made (as shown by tables), but it did not come up to expectation; it is hoped that, as the stone becomes more developed, it will improve in richness. · BLACKWOOD DIVISION AND BLUE MOUNTAIN SOUTH SUBDIVISION. Mr. John F. Hansen, Mining Registrar. Ample and efficient machinery for winding, pumping, and crushing purposes having lately been erected on some of the quartz claims, a few companies have been enabled to sink th'eir shafts to a depth below the water.level ; and as one company, namely the Sultan, on Barry's Reef, has }lad the excellent return of nearly 2 ozs. to the ton from their lowest level, and equally good stone on the bottom of that level, a fresh stimulus has been given to this branch ' of .Jniping, and the operations in connection with the True Blue, Faugh-a-Ballagh, Black wood Consols, and Barry's Reef mines, which are in close proximity to the Sultan, are carried on with alacrity and vigor. With the exception of the Trojan Company, which is crushing what is suppollCd to be payable stone, no work is being carried on at the Yankee line of reef. Operations having been stopped at the commencement of this quarter by the Clunes ancl Blackwood Company, as well as the Union Company, most of the. men formerly employed in these mines have left the district. On Golden Point the Extended Great Tunnel Company, af'ter crushing from various portions of their mine at the tunnel-level with very indifferent results, had a trial crushing from stone mised 15 feet below the same level, with an average of over 1 oz. to the ton, The company intend, with the view of proving at a deeper level, to erect pumping and winding machinery. On Sirumons' Reef the' Cornish Company are still doing remarkably well. The owner of the Big Hill Claim is prospecting the reef on different levels, as the large body of stone crushed during the quarter did not pay expenses. The erection of the winding and pumping engine of the Achilles Company is completed, and they are driving now on the 300-foot level for the reef. The Star of the West Company's last crushing, having left a good margin of profit, and, the mine being now in good working order, good results are looked forward to. · No. 1,. In this division during the past quarter mining matters have been almost at a standstill, owing, in the first place, to divisions among the shareholders interested in the Benalla alluvial lease~ about to be granted. The Benalla I,ead has never y!lt been proclaimed ; consequently, although it is well known by a few miners that payable ground exists (they having proved it so themselves), they do not feel disposed to venture upon sinking 130 feet until the lessees ,of the ground at present applied for have better ascertained its nature, and also the extent of the lead. I have registered several claims at Barjarg, on the main Mansfield road from here ; but the men, being poor, have had to give up and engage in other work for the present. GAFFNEY'S CREEK SUBDIVISION. ' Mr. A. B. Ainsworth, .Jfining Surveyor and Registrar. , 'A falling off of 25 per cent.. in the totai yield for the quarter is the noticeable feature in my present return,. which shows an average yield of little over one-half that of the previous quarter. Nevertheless this average yield is a payable one, the ·reefs in this division being, with two or three exceptions, mullock reefs, in which, with larger crushing plants and improved methods applied on a large scale, fifteen to eighteen grains to the ton would be made to pay expenses. ·The .alluvial has yielded fairly, and the banks of the creeks have been tried and found payable in several instances. Ground available for bank claims, however, is bUt limited in this division. ~ WOOD'S POINT SUBDIVISION. 1l1r. A. B. Ainsworth, 'Mining Surve.IJOr and Registrar. The hopeful antieipations eptertained have not been borne out by this quarter's results. The falling off in the Hope yields is due in part to want of sufficient water to keep aJl the batteries at work, and the absence of yields from the Franklin is due to the necessity of sec.uring the ground opened up originally in an unminerlike manner. · The additions to our list of payable yields are the Shamrock Gold Mining Company's returns, and John Heslin and party's crushing. but the average of the first company's mine is much below what was expected. · The yields on the Morning Star line have all fali!Jn off m&.terially, with the exception of the Age of Progress and the Prospectors', who show an increased yield. The United Company crushed a small parcel of stone yielding unusually welL The All Nations show a falling off, and the .total yield is barely one-half of that of the quarter previous, while the average yield is not half that of the period referred to. As a consequence, we enter the new year considerably depressed in spirit. ' . · The alluvial has yielded fairly. In a few cases high wages have been made: One miner is said to have washed up 8 ounces to eight hours' work, in his bank claim situate on Connaught Point,. about miles below 'Wood's Point. Rush and party, w?rking a~ the junction of Perki~s' Creek an~ the Goulbu~n, have also J?lade high ':ages for the last two months. Their gold 1s very nuggety, and yielded one etght-ounce piece. Water IS now gettmg scarce, and a falling off must be expected. · ' · . ' BIG RIVER SURDIVIHION. , . Mr. A: B. Ainswortlt, Mining Surveyor and Registrar. ·. , Mining matters in this division remain in their usual stagnant state". The Retriever Company, adjoining the· Londonderry Company, on the Railway Reef, have encouraging prospects in their claim, and seek to make arrange- " menta for the erection of machinery. . Peppin and party, on the Seek-and-Find Reef, have had their operations impeded by the late rains ; their shaft, however, is now clear of water, and good returns may be anticipated. · The tributers of the Luck' s-Ail have not been so far fortunate in their tribute. They have gone to considerable expense in running out timber and firewood trams for the use of the mine, which will materially lessen the cost of 'raising. · I have already reported the alluvial of this division as, in my opinion, the ·best in these ranges.. A hundred ·· miles and more of auriferous creeks, in the Big River valley alone, remain unexplored. The country is of 'a most attractive description at the heads of the Big River, extending into fiats from ten to one hundred acres in extent !Jf good agricultural soil. The one thing wanted is a thoroughfare from the Yarra track to Darlingford. At present available. tracks' extend but a few miles above Enoch's Point. The district is a cul-de-sac, with Darlingford at its entry. ~tores of all kinds must be obtained from Enoch's Point, _and carried to the claims, whatever their distance may be. Storekeepers are chary in sending out beyond a certain limit. and miners and prospectors begrudge the time and labor necessary to provision their parties at considerabl0 distances from. this one base of operations. · What the district requires is a road branching from the Yarra track near the head of the river, and, as a pre liminary" to such, road, a well marked and cut pack track, and especially a Government survey of the features of the country extending from the Yarra track northward to Enoch's Point: the country traversed by such track would be more facile than usual for our mountain roads. Lands available for cultivation are comparatively abundant, and the valley itself of the Big River is of the most healthy and picturesque description, wit.h. sufficient water at Enoch's Point to turn all the waterwheels in the district. With all these advantages, the district is making little or no progress; its scant population appears powerless and discouraged: but extraneous action, even of a limited kind-such as the survey and mapping of the south half of the division-would, I feel assured, at once wake· up the dormant energies to determined efforts and their reward. ' · . Rumour of the discovery of an antimony reef reached me a {nonth back, which I propose to visit shortly, when somewhat opened up, and report on. } ' A nugget weighing 28 ozs. 15 dwts. was got by a Chinaman within the last fortnight. · MITTA-MITTA DIVISION . .~.lfr. Andrew Trench, Mining R~gistrar. ,:f, • I . There has been a slight decrease in the population. On the Mitta-Mitta River mining affairs have progressed uiteadily. There is very little doing on the Thunder-and-Lightning Creek. A few miners are at work in the creek bed, and, '!from what I can learn, they are making small wages. On Snowy Creek the miners are preparing to work the creek bed again. ,;They would have been iu full working order by t!J.is time only for the flood which occurred this month. The prospects in the creek. bed are very good this :ccason, and, when the claims are in full working order, I have p.o .doubt but that their .owners will make good wages, 'l'he bank .sluicing claims are still being worked, but the supply of water is very small. 29 JAMIESON SUBDIVISION. Mr. John· C. Campbell, Mining Registrar. During the quarter there has been more done in alhivia.l II)ining than is usual in this district at this season of the year, which is due to the quantity of rain that has fallen lately, in consequence of which the water has continued· running in the races for a much longer time .. Parties of miners are now commencing to dam and work the bed of the Goulburn River, and, should the weather continue favorable, a considerable improvement in alluvial returns m~ty be expected during the next quarter. SANDHURST MINING DISTRICT: SANDHURST DIVISION. Mr. N. G. Stephens, ]}fining Registrar. , Mining in this division is in a very healthy and flourishing condition, with excellent prospects. Mining property has increased in value considerably. Calls are not so often necessary, and dividends are more frequent. · 'l'he treatment of pyrites has become quite a feature in our mining operations. A larger quantity has been operated on during the past quarter, and with very satisfactory results. The quantity saved is greatly on the increase; and Mr. Koch, proprietor of the Pioneer works, finds it necessary to erect additional furnaces. . Extensive works for the extraction of gold from tailings are very much required, as the yield of gold from the pyrites saved at the time of crushing·proves that the tailings from which the pyrites have not been separated must be very valuable. - Deep sinking receives-encouragement in various quarters and in many instances, amongst which I may mention the results of operations in Collmann and Tacchi's Reef Gold Mining Company's claim on the Collmann and Wetheral Reefs, between the 515 and 581 foot' levels-the crushings from which, during the last three mo"(lths, average over It oz. of gold per ton, with a reef two feet in width. The manager of this claim states that the ground at the-581-foot level, along the course of the reef, consists of alternate layers of slate and sandstone (not very hard) underlying to the east. , The shaft .is down 609 feet, and a contract is let to sink it a further depth of 40 feet, at £7 per foot, labor only. · The Johnson's Reef Gold Mining Company have erected two sets of concentrators at their crushing machine. The Catherine Reef U. C. Company have attached a condenser to their engine, and the manager states that it saves fully 25 per cent. in the consumption of firewood. . The Try-again Company speak highly of p;un-cotton for blasting. The manager states that no accident has occurred in the mine from the use of it, and that, with proper precaution, he considers it safer than powder, and sugp;ests that, in removing•the tamping from a shot that has missed, the miner drawing it should not go within an inch of the cotton, but place one inch more cotton, with fuze attached, at that depth in the hole, tamp again, and fire in the usual way. He also recommends that the fuze should be inserted in the hole in the cotton nearest the edge. Alluvial Workings.-The principal workings in alluvial are at Lower Huntly, where most of the companies are doing 'pretty well; but the Annabella Company, at the lower end, have been most successful. The Runtly Deep Lead Company are opening up ground towards the Deep Lead E~tended Company, which promises well. Very little is doing either at the White Hills or Pottery Flat ; in fact both are n'early deserted. At Epsom the Caledonia Company have obtained excellent yields from their claim, consequently the ground in the immediate neighborhood' has been sought after. Mr. Webster (Caledonia Company) states that, in sinking shafts through quicksand and water, he finds iron boxes far more effectual and much cheaper than the old system of timbering. One of the boilers attached to the 'plant of the Mariner's Reef· Company burst recently, which had the effect of atoppi1,1g crushing operations there for a considerable time. Nearly all the claims on Blucher's Reef are now idle. This reef is 3,000 feet in length, and has hitherto produced payable gold from the surface to a depth of 250 feet. The stone improves in richness as the reef descends. Up to the present. period the average yiel,d of gold per ton taken from it has been 18 dwts. Defective and totally inefficient drainage is the sole cause of the stoppage of work on the reef. . Many of the reefs at Mosquito, Craigie, and Chinaman's Flat are paying well. There has been a considerable increase of population at Chinaman's F~at, Lueknow, &c. AMHERST DIVISION. Mi. Joseph Smith, Mining Surveyor and Registrar. Mining operations have been unusually dull during th~ quarter, owing to the great depreciation of mining stock and the difficulty of meeting the calls. The dividend-paying claims are consijlerably reduced in the market, and those which are progre.ssive have great difficulty in carrying on the works. The Waterloo Company, iin Blucher's Reef (which would be one of the most permanent claims in the division), have scarcely made any progress since my last return; although it was confidently expected that the battery would be in operation by the middle of November last. The Sadowa has produced 1,872 ozs. ·and the Union 787 ozs. during the quarter, but much larger yields were expected. · · . . There is a falling off of the total quantity of gold produced, owing to many of the mining population being employed in harvest operations. · . . A VOCA SUBDIVISION. Mr. Hugh St; H. Blair, Mining Surveyor and Registrar. The chief distinctive feature of the quarter in this division is the discovery of. an auriferous deposit at No. 2 Creek, which has given considerable impetus to mining operations and business generally. Owing to the scarcity of water in the neighborhood, the quantity of washdirt puddled since the discovery has been exceedingly limited. The New Holland Company's plant is advertised for sale on the 31st instant, and also the freehold upon which the plant ~s situate. The inefficiency of the present machinery to over!Jome the influx of water has led to this re~ult. I regret tli.iS the more, as the New Holland is one of the most valuable alluvial mining properties in this division. The company's ground is situate at the lower end of the once famous Avoca Lead, and commands from four to five thousand feet of its course. A new quar~z reef has been· discovered in the vicinity of Donkey Hill, with good indications ; a prospecting claim has been registered. Everston's claim, on Vale's Reef·(near Homcbush), is.giving excellent returns. The average yield of the lode, which is two feet thick, being 2 ozs. to the ton. During the last quarter but little progress has been made in the mines of this locality, but many of the com-' panies are now making a start with excellent prospects, and I am of opinion that the year 1870 will show a marked • improvement in the yield of gold from the Dunolly and Tarnagulla Divisions. • ·, DUNOLLY. The Goldsborough Company are engaged in breaking out stone from the main reef, between the 154 and 214 foot levels; they are also sinking their i:nain shaft to a depth of 281 feet, and about to erect furnaces and machinery for ~reating pyrites. . · • Walker and Sons, of Bet-bet, have formed a company to work their lease, and will commence operations at once; they are also arranging for the purchase of pumping and winding machinery. Ballarat and Moliagul Company have sunk their shaft to a depth of 240 feet. The country is very hard-the last 40 feet of sinking cost £10 per foot-they are now driving for the reef to the west, at a depth of 233 feet from the surface. TARNAGULLA. • • The United Poverty Company have just completed the erection of a fine crushing plant of 20 stamp-heads, and. accepted tenders for breaking out stone ; they will be in full work in about a fortnight. South Poverty Consols Com pany have sunk anew shaft to a depth of 240 feet, in which they obtained very good prospects; they have also good prospects in a shaft further to the south, on what was formerly known as. Bowen's Claim. Rise-and-Shine Company have struck a reef 9 feet from tl.je surface, and 180 feet east of their old ;workings; they had a crushing of 43loads of stone, which yielded 74 ozs. 7 dwts. 21 grs. of gold; the reef is about 2t feet thick, well defined, and the prospects now obtained are as good as ever, and it is. spoken of as likely to prove as• rich as anything yet found in the district. . Excelsior Company have crushed I 50 loads of'quartz, which yielded 41 ozs. 16 dwts. of gold, which was obtained from the 17q.foot level ; the reef is well defined, and varies from '4 feet to 6 feet thick .. The mine is opened about 220 feet along the course. of .the reef. . ·:: .. ·. · .. 8andstone Reif.-Watkins' Prospecting Claim.-The shaft is down to a depth of 340 feet, where the reef is 18 feet thick, and well defined, the stone is yielding about l oz. of gold per load; about 300 loads of stone are now ready for crushing. South Sandstone C()mpany are now raising quai·tz from the 300-foot level, where the reef is 5 feet thick and well ~efined. The last crushings of 222 loads yielded :309 ozs. 3 dwts. 22 grs. of gold. . Prmces~ Ruyal Company, Prince Alfred Company, and ;E'rince Patrick Company are at a standstill, but hope to commence operations as soor). as the Victoria Company cut the reef and relieve them of some of the water. In alluvial mining there is very lit~le doing, the heav'y finds at the Berlin rush have induced many miners to leave this district for that locality. J H.EDBANK AN,D ST. ARNAUD SOUTH SUBDIVISIONS. ~Ir. Huglt St. H. Blair, .A-fining Surveyor and Registrar. . QUARTZ MININd. During the quarter the Isis Company h~tve added to their already extensive machinery, by erecting Wheeler's pans. The tabulated retUl·ns show the yield of gold per ton from pyrites operated on ; they have also completed the erection of ten additional stamp-heads, and are now engaged in placing one of Ford's boring machines in the mine, which will, no doubt, when completed, greatly facilitate the 'vorking of the mine, and enable them to keep the mill constantly supplied with crushing stuff. At Darling Flat some very good stone has been obtained on the s,urface, and .a lease has been applied for. . · . SECTION SHOWING THE W!)RKINGS OF THE IBIS COMPANY'S MINE, OXONIAN REEF, STUARTMILL. The yield of alluvial gold in this division still continues poor, the shallow ~round being nearly worked out, and the miners appear either to be unwilling or unable to test the deep ground. · ' The Sphinx Company, registered (Redbank), have bottomed a shaft on the Slaughteryard Lead, and washed from the bottom the excellent prospect of 1 oz. of nuggeLy gold, and are now preparing to erect suitable machinery to enable them to work the ground, the sinking being wet. ST. ARNAUD NORTH SUBDIVISION. Mr. John Phillips, Mining Surveyor and Regi_strar. The 105 tons of quartz crushed for Plummer and Co. yielded an alloy of silver and gold, 182 ozs., worth 2is. ~~ . The small quantity of quartz crushed is mainly owing to a greater number than usual of the mines being in the course of opening out for more lode. · ' The East Nuek, Jerejaw, and Fishhook Reefs, to the south of St. Arnaud, are showing gold, but remain depressed for want of machinery. · The Greenock Reef quartz raisings· have been in abeyance in consequence of the machinery in course of erection there. The late ~ributers in the Chrysolite mine have thrown up work. . CASTLEMAINE MINING DISTRICT. CASTLEMAINE DIVISION. Mr. Thomas L. Brown, Mining Surveyor and Registrar. The past quarter has been exceedingly dull ; no new feature has been developed. ·The old alluvial workings ill repay working by present appliances, and quartz mining has been very quiet; consequently numbers of miners have temporarily left the district for the Sandhurst mines and harvest work. · · On the Town Reef, a 4Q...horse-power engine, with pumping, winding, and crushing machinery, is being erected; an engine-shaft is sunk to water-level, 135 feet, and a drive opened to the reef, which is about 30 feet in thickness. On the Cranky Ned's Reef, the London and Man'chester Company have erected a fine plant,a 25-horse-power engine for pumping and winding, and a 10-horse-power for driving 10 stamp-heads, &c. Their engine-shaft is 106 feet, at which depth it takes a 9-inch pump to dram the mine. The large influx of water, and the shaft being off the line of reef, will retard immediate success. The Chewton Company have ceased sinking, and are now driving towards the reef, as also following the old workings ; their " country" and prospects are improving. In the. Myrtle Creek district there are a number of quartz reefs and surface alluvial hills, but most of the land has been sold or selected, although some time since reserved for mining purposes, and the would-be prospector is ordered off or required to pay 15 to 20 per centum for permission to mme. There are two crushing machines on the north side of the creek. · The best returns during the quarter were-from East Burns Reef, 95 ozs. from 19 tons, and from the Sebastopol 73 ozs. from 30 tons. · ' Odgers' company of 52 Chinese, on tHnah Flat, work very harmoniously ; they have opened one padcJ,ock, from which a little over 100 ozs, of gold wus washe_ FRYER'S CREEK DIVISION. Mr. Mark Amos, Mining 8u1"Veyor and Registrar. ALLUVIAL MINING. ' With respect to alluvial mining in general, and more particularly to puddling, there has been a considerable decrease in the yield of gold as compared with preceding quarters ; notwithstanding this, there have been some very rich discoveries at Green Gully, Bolcombe, but confined to a few only. It is generally believed that a•large extent of auriferous country exists between Bolcombe and Vanghan. ' · QuARTz MrN.ING. An important discovery has been made in quartz mining during the past quarter ; Messrs. Sarensen have struck a. new leader at the foot of Specimen Bill(on the Fryer's Creek side) which promises to rival many of our best reefs already opened on this line. Although this is a new lode, it is, in all probability, a continuation of Specimen Hill Reef, which has been worked to a considerable extent and depth during the past twelve years. The leader referred to is from t to 2 feet thick, with a westerly underlay. The party have only raised and crushed 38 tons, and have averaged 5 ozs. to the ton ; the stone at present is equally promising, as the quartz is thi~tkly impregnated with gold. Quartz mining is still of a progressive character; the average yield per ton is 10£ dwts., as compared with 9J dwts. of last quarter ; this average, however, would have been greater if all the returns could have been obtained ; and it is worthy of remark that, from careful inquiry, I find that the deeper the quartz lodes of this locality aretested, the greater are the yields, and the quantity of stone or crushing stuff increases. Leasing.-The leasing regulations have been in great favor during the past twelve months; a number of claimholders, who occupied ground under the bye-laws, have preferred the more certain tenure of a lease, with a view of avoiding litigation and securing their title. The Australian United Company have been vigorously working, but their returns are not given. , The Fryer's Company have completed the erection of their plant, an engine of 32 horse-power, with winding and pumping gear complete. The returns from Rowe and Kitto's claim (situated between Small's and Mill's and Rowe'.s), are very satis factory to all interested on this line of reef ; 240 tons yielding 360 ozs.-11tone or crushing stuff 8 feet wide, and only two men and a. boy engaged in the raising thereof. There are over 300 acres more held as mining claims in this division this year than were held by miners last year, partly in consequence of the large quantity of ground allowed by the Taradale divisional bye-laws, viz., on abandoned quartz reefs 150 feet per man, and in alluvial one acre per man. Several old reefs have been taken up during the last quarter that are likely to pay well. The Victoria Reef is showing stone that will yield half an ounce to the ton. The company are working at a depth of 80 feet, but the reef is extremely narrow. Messrs.-Pearson and Oglethorpe have taken the Aqhille.s '(or Hughes's old reef) on tribute on easy terms; they commence working this week. As this is the only crushing plant' near Taradale, the public will now be accom. modated, and can have ·trial crushings when prospecting poor reefs. , · The old reef known as the Kangaroo .. Reef has again attrn.cted attention, and' nearly the whole line of reef has been taken up. Baird, .l\iarsha!l, and 0o; have obtained valuable stone at a depth of a little o,ver 80 feet; they have on the surface about 40 tons of stone. that ffiil· .yield over 2 .ounces· of gold per ton ; the adjoining claims 'on this reef are all promising to be ricli a(ii.•greater-depth. Fourteen years (!go several claims on this reef paid well near the surface, but at a depth of 30·feet·became very· poor and were abandoned. · · · · · · .. - A quartz reef has beenl taken up west of the Coli ban, at Lauriston, arid is looking well ; another claim discovered by Chinamen, in .<;>r close to the Rivet: Coliban, near Russell's old ree.f, is being worked, and is yielding good- looking stone i he:e the reef is verr wj:de." ·. . . . • . j • • • The cla~ms m Lonergan's paddock contmue to yield riCh stone, and have created a great excitement m the district ; in some of the claims the stone is 12 feet wide, and is easily Qbtained, so that from four claims, Messrs. Bennie's crushing- machine is employed day;and night. The North Star, at a depth of 170 feet, obtained stone last week that yielded l oz. 10 dwts. per ton; the Energetic, at a depth of 195 feet, took out stone that yielded over 2 ounces per ton; the Central Energetic, .at a depth of lOO feet, find the stone not quite so rich as the adjoining claims, but have a great width of stone. . .. The Kymi'ton claim has crushed but one small lot from a depth of 224 feet, which yielded nearly 7 dwts. 'rhe G.:neral W yndham Company are about beginning to work again, and intend to crush ~·or_ the public, which will be a great convenience, as "there is more stone being obtained in the ·di~trict· than can be cru'shed by the present 1 1 crushin power. , ~ · ' .. ' .,. '"". _•r '.'' ' ''·''"· ·: rn alluvial mining there is a slight improvem'ent. · The· suifaoo claim in the township continues to yield well ; the miners' weekly earnings in this claim are sometimes £9 per man; the ground is only 2 feet deep, the dirt ·averaging :3 dwts. per load. Other· small· smart chiims are paying reasonabre wages~ '• 'rhe Central :Mining Company have :struck a very heavy drift, similar to that found in deep sinking in the Balhtrat district, a loose shiftin·g drift. That this is the deepest ground yet struck between M alms bury and Taradale is evident from the fact that the central sliaft is now draining the water from all the surrounding old workings in the vicinity, and the company are so thoroughly satisfied with the prospects of this claim that they have made arrange ments for the lease of the whole of the ground formerly occupied by the Lord Malmsbury, Lone Star, and Cambrian 1 Gold Mining Companies. · TARRANGOWER DIVISION. Mr. Robert Nankivell, Mining Surveyor and Registrar. Quartz mining has slightly improved; there is an increase over the previous quarter of 234 ozs. of gold, and an average increase of 1 dwt. 4-l; grs. per ton. The number of miners employed shows a decrease of nearly lOO; these are chiefly alluvial miners. · . . Amongst the companies in Maldon' the Great Western Company now hold the foremost place. Although the average yield is but 13 dwts. per ton, owing to the system of mining pursued by this company the p1'oprietors get a handsome percentage on their capital. The Nelson Company's mine has fallen off in yield, the quantity of gold this quarter being o:uly 390 ozs., as against 715 ozs. for the previous quarter. The quartz vein or lode has been cut off by a dyke, nearly horizontally, underneath which it has.not yet proved payable. The .Nelson Extended Company, adjoining the Nelson on the south, which last quarter promised so well, has scarcely realized the expectations formed; it is, however, again looking better than of late. The Beehive Company, in driving.~est at the 360-foot level, have gone through 30 feet of quartz at a distance of 270 feet from their slJaft, but it not proving payable, they have again suspended opera tions in the deep ground. The New Enterprise Company, on ·Nuggety Reef, still continue to raise payable stone, the last crushing being 25 tons, which yielded'27 ozs. 8 dwts. of smelted gold. · :· ~;: :.r · · The six small claims ori the' "Eaglehawk Reef (north end), and the Esperalioo'•Claim, on Linscott's Reef, have amalgamated, with a view of economising labor, as one good shaft and one small-steam engine will be sufficient for the proper working of the whole of the ground. . · . I forward herewith a pla-q·.and sections of the Beehive Company's mine, Beehive ·Reef, Maldon. The reef as shown on th'e·pJlm· oetween A arid:'B has been· taken out bodily to 'the depth shown in the longitudinal section, where it narrowed down to a wedge· shape at 18 feet west of the shaft; a face still continues down from here (see cross section). A reef was struck in the'180.foot level, at 164 feet east of the engine-shaft, 5 feet in thickness, which was sunk on for a. few feet, but the indications were not sufficient to justify any further operations. At the 240.foot level, a drive ~vas put. in 60 feet in 'wso'u~h-westerly direction to the reef. 'fhe 300-foot level was driven 200 .. feet south before it struck the reef. A crosscut to the westward at this level struck a.qi.J.artz vein, 1 foot in thickness, at 35 feet west of the shaft. . . , . . . · . . In the 360-foot ~e'(el, ~ cro~~cut was pr:t in!Jrom the engine-s?af~ to t~e we_stward; at./54 feet a quartz vein 1 foot m th1ckness, and carry1_ng a ht~le g~ld, was go~e t?rough. In contmumg th1s ~nvE' r~ce,ntly from 119 feet to 207 feet, a large body of quartz 30 feet m thickness was ·driven through (see cross sect10n) ; It 1s very loose and mixed with bluestone in the back of the driv!',,but·appears to:be forming itself into a solid and well-defined lode on the bottom. No gold is visible in this level.· · · ' · ' , ' In the 430-foot, leve~ (sep cross'_section);' ~'quartz vein (apparently the same as that cut in the 300-foot and 360· foot levels) was struck at 64·feet west'of the shaft; it was driven on north 70 feet, and south 41 feet (see longitudinal section), A winze was also SJ.!.nk .. upon it :13 feet; where some hard ground coming in from the west throws it towards the shaft. The quart!(:' vein W the bottom of the shaft underlies east, and is about 2 feet in thickness · it carries a little geld, hut not sufficient 'to pay, the ground being very hard and expensive to work. ' . ·In the north. ~haft the reef. was wor.ked to_the 180-foot level, where it narr?wed down to a wedge (see cross sect10n); a face contmued down, which was followed to a depth of 310 feet, but nothmg was discovered. There is a slight decrease in population as compared with last quarter, which may be fully accounted: for from the tempting rate of wages offered for harvest hands. The yield of gold from quartz for the district shows an increase for the quarter of 1595 ozs. 19 dwts. 10 grs. The Loyal Liberal Company, north of Warrandyte, having found their machinery defective, suspended their crushing operations after crushing only 30 tons of quartz, which yielded, under disadvantageous circumstances, 1 oz. 17 dwts. 6 grs. per ton, and is considered payable; but with improved machinery the company anticipate much better results. At Steele's Creek, a quantity of rich-looking stone has been raised, and is only waiting the completion of the machinery in course of erection to test its value. _ The only new incident I have to report is the fact of the recent discovery of a rich antimony reef at Ringwood. I am informed that one person has shipped about 100 tons of stone, which has been estimated to contain about 65 per cent. of pure metal. BLUE MOUNTAIN NORTH SUBDIVISION. Mr. G. McPherson, Mining Registrar. The Kitty Ogden and Rothschild have only recently commenced operations, and are arranging for machinery, &c. The Alma and Amelia claims have not been at work for twelve months. The quartz crushed at the Alma and Amelia was obtained in the Blackwood district. The Rothschild Company had their quartz crushed by the Amelia battery. There are several quartz reefs being prospected, from which there are, as yet; no results. - ARARAT MINING DISTRICT. ARARAT DIVISION. Mr. Charles J. W. Russell, Mining Surveyor and Registrar. The alluvial mining generally has become unremunerative to the workers, ,with the exception of some old ground claims on the large flat south-west from the town of Ararat, which are principally in the possession of parties of Chinese, who have worked deep lead wet claims with great industry and intelligence, and their returns have been remunerative. The Galatea Company, who hold a lease of 10 acres of old ground on the same flat, have been working deep ground (the old Black Lead) with a party of twelve men and a steam-engine of 10 horse-power, and have raised washdirt yielding a weekly average of 14 ozs. of gold. , The Wet Lead Company, to the north of the town, have recently commenced operations within their lease of old ground by constructing drives at a depth of lOO feet for future works; their prospects are considered hopeful. The quartz reefs at Moyston have produced less gold than usual through interruption in the progress of their works. T-he North Star have from 1,391! tons of stone obtained 422 ozs. of gold. The Southern Cross have been en,gaged driving a level eastward to a new parallel reef which they have lately reached; it is from 12 t.o 18 inches in thickness, and reported to be rich. Only 90 tons of stone from the old workings have been raised and crushed during the quarter, which has yielded 3It ozs. of gold. The Kangaroo Company have raised and crushed 1,266 tons of stone from a depth of· 570 feet, which has yielded 375 ozs. of gold. The prospects of these three companies for the next quarter are thought to be good. Of the great number of quartz interests for which leases have been obtained or applied for, the majority are quite at a standstill. T-hey were applied .for many months ago (during the el:istence of great quartz mining excite ment), in many instances, by persons of very small pecuniary means, who, having failed to obtain funds from the public, have been unable to carry on the necessary works for the development of the reefs. · PLEASANT CREEK DIVISION. A crushing of 60 tons from the North Cross Reef Company's claim from deep level, 650 feet, gave the handsome return of 2 ozs. 17 dwts. per ton. The Little Newington had a crushing of 79 tons, which gave 15 dwts. 19 grs. per ton. In No. 1 shaft, Newington Company's claim, at a depth of 377 feet, a drive of 40 feet has been put in, and a quartz lode has been stl·uck, wbich has strengthened the belief in the permanency and extent of the quartz reefs to the north-west. . Ainswortlt, Mining Surveyor and ·Registrar, Quartz mining in tllis division is at present greatly depressed. With the exception of the Lochfyne and Lochness Companies (the latter not crushing at present) none of the reefs now working can be looked on as profitable. I trust a change will take place shortly, and the Commercial Reef, and especially Hemphill's new reef, the discovery of which I reported in October last, afford substantial grounds for hope. In alluvial we have been doing uncommonly well, and considerable enterprise is being shown. The -Red Jacket Creek has contributed 450 ozs. to the yield given, and the old '· nuggety" claims on the Jordan immediately above Jericho have again given good yields. Geogan and Party's claim, now Gannon and Gaffney's, is again yielding nuggets up to 8 ounces, as is also the claim adjoining, known as Bovil Chandler's. " DONNELLY'S CREEK DIVISION. Mr. Arthur F. Walker, Mining Surveyor and Registrar, The expectations formed last quarter of the improvement in quartz mining in this district have not been fulfilled. The Victoria Company, which was .formed to work the ground known as the "North Crinoline;" have had such exceedingly poor returns from the quartz crushed, that the company have suspended opera.tions, and will probably be wound up. The Prince Alfred Company are still at work, but have not had a crushing during the quarter. The alluvial miners have sent in a good return of gold, the principal part of which has been obtained from the old workings on Donnelly's Creek. STRINGER'S CREEK SUBDIVISION. Mr. E. S. Gutteridge, Mining Registrar. No great change has taken place during the past ':luarter. All the young companies.are progressive, and being prospected vigorously. The new battery for the Long Tunnel Company, consists of 20 heads, 18~-inch cylinder, 3 feet stroke, to be supplied by a multi tubular boiler, and all the latest improvements in amalgamation, and for the treatment of arsenical pyrit6s, also Brown and S~anfield's patent conceutrutors. Several other companies are also erecting first-class machinery. Walllalla Corupany.-As the stopes are get.ting higher, the average yield of the stone is impoverishing. The workings are still confined between the adit and the upper level, and the stopes which have been worked filled in with mullock. The thickness of crushing stuff between walls is from 2 feet to 18 feet, and in those places where the lode is over 18 feet in thickness the quartz will be raised by cross stoping. North Gippsland Comp'any.-The machhiery in the. chamber is completed, and working satisfactory. The men in the mine are engaged enlarging and repairing the old shaft to fit it for winding and pumping purposes. The battery is. still crushing for the Long Tunnel Company. Long Tunnel Company.-The main drive at the 171-foot level is now in l84 feet from the entrance; the lode, 9 feet 6 inches in face between walls, showing on the hanging wall about 20 inches of dyke stone. A winze is being sunk from the 52-foot level, 122 f~et from the old winze, for j;he purpose of dividing the block. Outside the mine men are engaged at the battery foundation. The company having completed the purchase of the Wellesley Company's claim and machine site, as also the Royal Mail Hotel and ground, will now have· sufficient room for all machinery purposes. , , Empress Company.-Pumping and 'Vinding machinery being all completed, sinking was again commenced in the shaft, which is now do'Yn 107 feet. Preparations are being made for receiving the battery, which has been lately purchased. Molesworth Company (known as No. 4 North Cohen's Reef) are sinking winze from the upper to the lower level; they are now down about 70 feet, and expect to breal' through in 60 feet more. The lode is from 12 to 14 feet wide, and looking exceedingly well-would average 2 or 2! ozs. to the ton. Northern and Eastern Happy-go-Lucky have dnven their tunnel 140 feet. 'l'he lode ·shows good payable gold-in some places rich-and t,he trial crushing, which was of the worst quality stone~ was very satisfactory, A tramway has been laid and hopper conStructed, to connect with the battery of the Happy-go-Lucky Company, who will continue. to crush for them ; and as. th~ JP.'O.llnd is easily worked, ~hey expect to keep thtil mill nearlr cons~tl;r prqshing, and give regular dividends, ,- '. · · · ·· · · · 40 RiYS.SELL'S CREEK SUBDIVISION. Mr. CJharles Gadd, Mining Registrar. CEMENT WoRKINGS oN THE TANGIL. The No. 1 TaJ:igil Cement Gold Mining Company expect 'to commence crushing in about seven days, the engine and stamps being .all in pqsition and everything completed, except the tables, which are being made on the ground. The company have about 800 tons cement and wash raJsed and ready for crushing; it is confidently expected to yield 10 dwts. per ton. " • The No. 2 Tangil ·Cement Gold Mining Company, sometimes called the Young Ballarat, are making good progress with the erection of their battery, the whole of the machinery being now on the ground. This compan.Y expect to commence crushing about theJirst week in March. It is generally thought here that the cement from th1s company's claim will yield better than. the No. 1 Company, but the quantity is limited. . . The Jumping Sailor, or the Golden Cement Gold Mining Company, have also a small battery of five head of stamps nearly finished, and expect to commence crushing in about fourteen days. The 'cement in this company's ground looks very rich in some parts. . There is very little doing in any of the other claims ; they are all anxiously waiting to see the result of the crushing.
