Herzliya, Holon, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv) Der österreichische Regisseur Hans Weingartner ist einer der ganz wenigen Utopiker in seinem Metier. Seine Filme gehen u.a. folgenden Fragen nach: Was bedeutet Gerechtigkeit? In einer vom Goethe Institut Israel mit lokalen Cinematheken veranstalteten Retrospektive sind sechs Filme Weingartners zu sehen. file:///C:/Users/ronit.alon/Downloads/Program%20April%20(1).html 2/12 3.4.2019 *|MC:SUBJECT|* The Austrian filmmaker Hans Weingartner is one of the few utopians of his profession. His films are dealing - among others - with the following questions: What does justice mean and which dimension does it have for society and the individual? How can justice be established? However, his films do not become a theoretical discourse, on the contrary, they are very powerful and feature characters with real feelings and dreams. In a retrospective, organized by the Goethe Institute Israel in collaboration with local cinematheques, six movies of Weingartner will be screened. In 1963 in Graz the respected local politician and wealthy farmer Franz Murer is on trial for a serious war crime allegedly committed while he was in command of the Vilnius ghetto in 1941–43. Review Tri-C Classical Piano Series: Daniel Gortler at CMA (October 27) by Robert Rollin When Israeli pianist Daniel Gortler entered the stage for his Sunday afternoon recital at the Cleveland Art Museum’ s Gartner Auditorium, he radiated poise and concentration. Jet setter Gortler is on faculty at the Buchman-Mehta School of Music at Tel Aviv University and is guest piano studies pro- fessor at New York University’s Steinhardt School Depart- ment of Music. He regularly plays piano concertos and con- certizes in solo and chamber music recitals around the world. His program concentrated on the genre of piano fantasy and fantasia, and featured works by Mozart and Schumann. This was a clever choice because both composers are noted for their ability to string many themes together in a manner that makes their pieces seem structured and beautifully organized. • Souvenirs of Conquest: Israeli Occupations As Tourist Events
Int. J. Middle East Stud. 40 (2008), 647–669. Printed in the United States of America doi:10.1017/S0020743808081531 Rebecca L. Stein SOUVENIRS OF CONQUEST: ISRAELI OCCUPATIONS AS TOURIST EVENTS It is perhaps self-evident to suggest that military conquest shares something with tourism because both involve encounters with “strange” landscapes and people. Thus it may not surprise that the former sometimes borrows rhetorical strategies from the latter— strategies for rendering the strange familiar or for translating threatening images into benign ones. There have been numerous studies of this history of borrowing. Scholars have considered how scenes of battle draw tourist crowds, how soldiers’ ways of seeing can resemble those of leisure travelers, how televised wars have been visually structured as tourist events (e.g., the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq), and how the spoils of war can function as a body of souvenirs.1 These lines of inquiry expand our understanding of tourism as a field of cultural practices and help us to rethink the parameters of militarism and warfare by suggesting ways they are entangled with everyday leisure practices. This paper considers the ways this entanglement functions in the Israeli case. To be more specific, I am interested in the workings of Israeli tourist practices and discourses during two key moments of Israeli military engagement: the 1967 war and subsequent onset of the Israeli military occupation and the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon. My analysis in both instances focuses on a reading of popular Israeli Hebrew and English- language print media,2 with attention to the ways that Israeli newspapers represented the incursion, occupation, and/or conquest to Israeli publics in the immediate aftermath of the wartime victory (1967) and invasion (1982).
