The remainder of this chapter is devoted to, a study of. the situation in the Islamic state after the death of Yaold and the reaction of the people to this. Particular attention is paid to the connection between the way in which Mucäwiya forced his son upon the people and the problems which afflicted the country as a consequence of this act. The second chapter deals with the genealogy of the tribes, since the blood bond was considered by the Arabs to be the soundest relationship, on which to base their social organisations. In this chapter all tribes which played a significant role in this period are described and their supposed relationship to one another is indicated. The third chapter is an attempt to define the early Arab settlement in Syria and al-Jazira and classify the Arab inhabitants of each town and province in order to explain the backgrounds of the tribal conflicts over territory. xiii The last chapter of this part is a discussion of the tribal conflicts, particularly in Syria where the main confrontation between the contenders for power took place. The second part is divided into four chapters. The first deals with the role of political poetry. In this chapter an attempt is made to define when real political poetry started. A distinction is also drawn between political and tribal martial poetry. The role which the poets played in their society is examined both in the pre- Islamic period and that of Islam, in the light of the circumstances of both periods. Attention is paid to the gradual development of society and its influence on the political poetry, particularly in the Umayyad period. The second chapter is concerned with the contribution of poets to social and political problems which developed in the Umayyad period. The views of each rival contender for power are examined insofar as they are revealed in verse, as are the various opinions and the backgrounds of each group. The third chapter is devoted to the tribal competition for power in the early Umayyad period. The different approaches which each tribe adopted to achieve their goal are pointed out, as are the ways in which they reacted after they had been forced to accept the Umayyads. Yemen, xiv 0 Taghlib and Qays in Syria were involved in this competition and an extensive selection of verses are quoted to support our argument. The final chapter deals with the policies of the cAbd Umayyads after al-Malik had established himself and was recognised as the universal Caliph. First we have examined the reaction of his former supporters, Yemen, as it appears in their poetry. After this we have tried to assess the poets' role as defenders of their community against governmental policy, on the one hand, or on the other as supporters of the Umayyads and upholders of their policies.     Pegs, Cords, and Ghuls: Meter of Classical Arabic Poetry Hazel Scott Haverford College Department of Linguistics, Swarthmore College Fall 2009 There are many reasons to read poetry, filled with heroics and folly, sweeping metaphors and engaging rhymes. It can reveal much about a shared cultural history and the depths of the human soul; for linguists, it also provides insights into the nature of language itself. As a particular subset of a language, poetry is one case study for understanding the use of a language and the underlying rules that govern it. This paper explores the metrical system of classical Arabic poetry and its theoretical representations. The prevailing classification is from the 8th century C.E., based on the work of the scholar al-Khaliil, and I evaluate modern attempts to situate the meters within a more universal theory. I analyze the meter of two early Arabic poems, and observe the descriptive accuracy of al-Khaliil’s system, and then provide an analysis of the major alternative accounts. By incorporating linguistic concepts such as binarity and prosodic constraints, the newer models improve on the general accessibility of their theories with greater explanatory potential. The use of this analysis to identify and account for the four most commonly used meters, for example, highlights the significance of these models over al-Khaliil’s basic enumerations. The study is situated within a discussion of cultural history and the modern application of these meters, and a reflection on the oral nature of these poems.     THE STRUGGLE AGAINST MUSAYLIMA AND THE CONQUEST OF YAMAMA M. J. Kister The Hebrew University of Jerusalem The study of the life of Musaylima, the "false prophet," his relations with the Prophet Muhammad and his efforts to gain Muhammad's ap- proval for his prophetic mission are dealt with extensively in the Islamic sources. We find numerous reports about Musaylima in the Qur'anic commentaries, in the literature of hadith, in the books of adab and in the historiography of Islam. In these sources we find not only material about Musaylima's life and activities; we are also able to gain insight into the the Prophet's attitude toward Musaylima and into his tactics in the struggle against him. Furthermore, we can glean from this mate- rial information about Muhammad's efforts to spread Islam in territories adjacent to Medina and to establish Muslim communities in the eastern regions of the Arabian peninsula. It was the Prophet's policy to allow people from the various regions of the peninsula to enter Medina. Thus, the people of Yamama who were exposed to the speeches of Musaylima, could also become acquainted with the teachings of Muhammad and were given the opportunity to study the Qur'an. The missionary efforts of the Prophet and of his com- panions were often crowned with success: many inhabitants of Yamama embraced Islam, returned to their homeland and engaged in spreading Is- lam. Furthermore, the Prophet thoughtfully sent emissaries to the small Muslim communities in Yamama in order to teach the new believers the principles of Islam, to strengthen their ties with Medina and to collect the zakat.

The Syrian Orthodox in their Historical and Artistic Settings 2.1 Northern Mesopotamia and Mosul The blossoming of ‘Syrian Orthodox art’ during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries is mainly attested for Northern Mesopotamia. At the time, Northern Mesopotamia was commonly known as the Jazira (Arabic for ‘island’), a geographic entity encompassing roughly the territory which is located between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, and lies north of Baghdad and south of Lake Van. 1 In ecclesiastical terms, this region is called Athur (Assyria). 2 Early Islamic historians and geographers distinguished three different districts: Diyar Mudar, Diyar Bakr, and Diyar Rabi cah. Today, these districts correspond more or less to eastern Syria, south-eastern Turkey, and northern Iraq, respectively. Mosul was the capital of the Diyar Rabi cah district, which ‘extended north from Takrit along both banks of the Tigris to the tributary Ba caynatha river a few kilometres north of Jazirat ibn cUmar (modern Cizre) and westwards along the southern slopes of the Tur cAbdin as far as the western limits of the Khabur Basin’.

September 1999 ABSTRACT This thesis aims to investigate the significance of Divine Love in the Islamic tradition with reference to Sufis who used the medium of Arabic to communicate their ideas. Divine Love means the mutual love between God and man. It is commonly accepted that the Sufis were the forerunners in writing about Divine Love. However, there is a relative paucity of literature regarding the details of their conceptions of Love. Therefore, this attempt can be considered as one of the first of its kind in this field. The first chapter will attempt to define the nature of love from various perspectives, such as, psychology, Islamic philosophy and theology. The roots of Divine Love in relation to human love will be explored in the context of the ideas that were prevalent amongst the Sufi authors regarded as authorities; for example, al-Qushayri, al-Hujwiri and al-Kalabadhi. The second chapter investigates the origins Of Sufism with a view to establishing the role that Divine Love played in this. The etymological derivations of the term Sufi will be referred to as well as some early Sufi writings. It is an undeniable fact that the Qur'an and tladith are the bedrocks of the Islamic religion, and all Muslims seek to justify their ideas with reference to them.
