A review. 1963: The original 911 911 2,0 Coupé from 1965 As the successor to the Porsche 356, the 911 won the hearts of sports car enthusiasts from the outset. The prototype was first unveiled at the Frankfurt IAA Motor Show in 1963 as the 901, and was renamed the 911 for its market launch in 1964. Its air-cooled six-cylinder flat engine with two-litre displacement delivered 130 hp, giving it an impressive top speed of 210 km per hour. If you wanted to take things a little slower, you could also opt for the four-cylinder Porsche 912 from 1965. In 1966, Porsche presented the Page 1 of 6 160 hp 911 S, which was the first to feature forged alloy wheels from Fuchs. The 911 Targa, with its distinctive stainless steel roll-over bar, made its debut in late 1966 as the world’s first ever safety cabriolet. The semi-automatic Sportomatic four-speed transmission joined the line-up in 1967. And with the 911 T, and the later E and S variants, Porsche became the first German manufacturer to comply with strict US exhaust emission control regulations. The Porsche 911 became more and more powerful as displacement increased, initially to 2.2 litres (1969) and later to 2.4 (1971). The 911 Carrera RS 2.7 of 1972 with a 210 hp engine and weighing less than 1000 kg remains the epitome of a dream car to this day. Its characteristic “ducktail” was the world’s first rear spoiler on a production vehicle.

    newsroom History May 13, 2016 The sister of Carel Godin de Beaufort Cornelie Petter-Godin de Beaufort was the timekeeper and team manager for her brother Carel, one of the last true amateurs in international racing – a special reunion with a 718 RSK Spyder, Carel's former companion. Sunlight breaks through the clouds above the grounds of the estate, and threads its way along the branches of the venerable trees, through the sweeping boughs of a magnificent red beech. The canopy of leaves diffuses the light and magically transposes us from the present to the past. The Porsche 718 RSK on the gravel driveway takes on a soft golden glow. And suddenly it’s there – that special quality, or power of enchantment, that a historic race car commands. No one is indifferent to this power. The lady of the estate, Cornelie Petter-Godin de Beaufort, walks slowly around the car once, and then again. It seems to ignite something in her, propelling her thoughts back to another, faraway time. Cornelie Petter-Godin de Beaufort is 84 years old. Her movements are cautious, her eyes are lively and sparkle. As she circles the car, her hands are thrust deep into the pockets of her jacket, as if to stop herself from caressing it. “Cars were just a means to an end for me,” she says. “They were a promise of freedom. But for my brother, they were much, much more.” We are in the Netherlands visiting Maarsbergen Castle, the ancestral seat of the aristocratic Godin de Beaufort family. Carel Godin de Beaufort, Cornelie’s brother, was a legendary race-car driver who loved speed, risk, and above all his Porsche.

    History Touring philosophy is part of the Porsche tradition In Porsche models, “T” has always stood for Touring, and is synonymous with driving pleasure in a particularly pure form. The first Touring variant appears in autumn 1967 when the 911 T makes its début. As a new basic model in the company’s range of sports cars, it is distinguished by a particularly strong price-performance ratio and a standard equipment configuration that focuses on the essentials, just as the Porsche 912 (with four- cylinder boxer engine) does. Like the 718 T today, the 911 T has an engine capacity of two litres, based on which the six-cylinder boxer engine in the 911 T achieves 110 PS – combined with a weight of just 1,080 kg, the 911 T displays an agile temperament and a top speed of 200 km/h. With manual 4-gear transmission supplied as standard, it is also available in a 5-gear variant. One outstanding sporting success earns this model a special place in Porsche history: More than 50 years ago in 1968, factory drivers Vic Elford and David Stone drove a 180 PS 911 T to victory in the Monte Carlo rally – the first big win for a 911 on the international motorsport stage. 911 Carrera Clubsport: Exclusive lightweight model The 1987 911 Carrera Clubsport also followed the Touring philosophy, with a spartan lightweight version that knows all about stripping back to basics, especially in the interior. Rear seats and electric window switches are absent, along with the automatic heating regulation, passenger sun visor, clothes hooks, and covers for the storage compartments in the doors.

He started in the early ‘70s with Porsches and had done very well. He won the first championship in 1971, sharing a Porsche with Hurley Haywood in the GTU class (under 2.5-litre). By 1973 he was running the iconic Porsche Carrera RSR and he would win the IMSA title in 1973, 1974 and 1975. By then he was known as ‘Peter Perfect,’ always approaching his racing in a very professional way, trying to leave nothing to chance. In 1976, on one occasion IMSA would not allow the 934 to run, and he realised that the RSR would struggle, and so switched to the factory BMW CSL. www.porscheroadandrace.com He was beaten to the title by Al Holbert in a Chevrolet Monza. By 1977 IMSA had decided to allow a 934 ½ to run, but this was no ordinary 934, this was a specially made 934 with some permitted changes, sort of like a 934 on steroids. Peter Gregg and Guy Chasseuil finished in 14th place overall and third in the Grand Touring 3000 class in the 1973 Le Mans in the #48 911 Carrera RSR Peter Gregg showed up with one of these at Sebring and promptly sold the car to Jim Busby, as he had a second new one on the way.
