Moral Questions Concerning Story in Immersive Hypertext Narrative
Thoughts On Some Moral Questions Concerning Story In Immersive Hypertext Narrative Mark Bernstein1 1 Eastgate Systems, Inc, 134 Main Street, Watertown Massachusetts USA [email protected] Abstract. The moral dangers of fiction have always alarmed commentators, but immersive interaction gives rise to new qualms derived not from fiction’s indulgence of untruth nor in the sexual license of itinerant players, but that grow from immersion, from fictive immersive experiences that resist reflection. Keywords: Hypertext, Fiction, Storytelling, Narrative. 1 Twenty Years On The Holodeck Twenty years have elapsed since Janet Murray’s Hamlet On The Holodeck [1] argued that the future of new media lay in vividly immersive, encyclopedic and emotional interactive experi- ences rather than in the intertexual, allusive, lyrical and intellectual(ized) works that had epito- mized new media through the preceding decade [2]. Murray’s vision of immersive dialogic experience been enormously influential throughout new media. In these notes, I would like to call attention to a number of questions and sources of disquiet that arise in composing immersive works in which the reader intentionally and effectually acts to change the events that take place in the story1. These issues are not new but they have not been widely discussed, and drawing them together in this context may have some value. These are not hypothetical or invented questions. Most actually arose in the course of my writing a hypertext school story, Those Trojan Girls [6]. Others were familiar to me from edit- ing and publishing hypertext fictions over several decades. Reflective practice is an important source of insight, and its judicious use can prove invaluable [7]. -

Cast Biographies RILEY KEOUGH (Christine Reade) PAUL SPARKS
Cast Biographies RILEY KEOUGH (Christine Reade) Riley Keough, 26, is one of Hollywood’s rising stars. At the age of 12, she appeared in her first campaign for Tommy Hilfiger and at the age of 15 she ignited a media firestorm when she walked the runway for Christian Dior. From a young age, Riley wanted to explore her talents within the film industry, and by the age of 19 she dedicated herself to developing her acting craft for the camera. In 2010, she made her big-screen debut as Marie Currie in The Runaways starring opposite Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning. People took notice; shortly thereafter, she starred alongside Orlando Bloom in The Good Doctor, directed by Lance Daly. Riley’s memorable work in the film, which premiered at the Tribeca film festival in 2010, earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the Milan International Film Festival in 2012. Riley’s talents landed her a title-lead as Jack in Bradley Rust Gray’s werewolf flick Jack and Diane. She also appeared alongside Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey in Magic Mike, directed by Steven Soderbergh, which grossed nearly $167 million worldwide. Further in 2011, she completed work on director Nick Cassavetes’ film Yellow, starring alongside Sienna Miller, Melanie Griffith and Ray Liota, as well as the Xan Cassavetes film Kiss of the Damned. As her camera talent evolves alongside her creative growth, so do the roles she is meant to play. Recently, she was the lead in the highly-anticipated fourth installment of director George Miller’s cult- classic Mad Max - Mad Max: Fury Road alongside a distinguished cast comprising of Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Zoe Kravitz and Nick Hoult. -

Bill's Guide to Week Two of the 47Th Annual Chicago International Film
Bill’s Guide to Week Two of the 47th Annual Chicago International Film Festival By Bill Stamets Special for Films for Two® My recommended films in Week Two (in “must see” order): 1.) Pina: German director Wim Wenders previously profiled Japanese film director Yasujiro Ozu, Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto and Cuban musicians. His latest documentary introduces cinefiles to the choreography of German avant-gardist Pina Bausch. In his first use of 3-D cinematography, Wenders evokes the volume of the stage, even for performances staged in non-theatrical settings, including a tramway and an escalator. Four different works are presented. Some are revisited via archival 2-D footage. Seeing various versions adds more figurative depth to our appreciation of Bausch's work than the 3-D adds literal depth to our onscreen perception. Bausch's death during the making of the film may have lent an elegiac note to the laudatory interviews with members of her international company Tanztheater Wuppertal. They do not speak on camera during looking-into-the lens portrait sessions. The soundtrack excerpts their comments, apparently recorded off- camera, to underscore their role as voiceless dancers. Wenders channels Bausch's tactile and theoretical grasp of the body as metaphysical material for art. 2.) The Descendants: Alexander Payne (Sideways, About Schmidt, Election, Citizen Ruth) directs George Clooney as Matt King, an Hawaiian lawyer dealing with his wife hospitalized in a coma and their 10-year-old and 17- year-old daughters. Payne and his co-writers start from Kaui Hart Hemmings' 2008 novel for a truly touching male melodrama, as Clooney's character reconciles his mixed emotions about his wife. -

Uw Cinematheque Presents Three Nights of Indie Horror Actor Pat Healy in Person Feb
CINEMATHEQUE PRESS RELEASE -- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FEBRUARY 6, 2012 UW CINEMATHEQUE PRESENTS THREE NIGHTS OF INDIE HORROR ACTOR PAT HEALY IN PERSON FEB. 17 & FILMMAKER JOE SWANBERG IN PERSON FEB. 24 In Februray, the UW Cinematheque will offer the first Madison-area theatrical screenings of three acclaimed new works by American independent filmmakers, The Innkeepers, Silver Bullets and The Oregonian. Each film offers its own unique contribution to the horror genre. In Ti West’s The Innkeepers, the modern ghost story is played as much for laughs as scares: a pair of misfit concierges (Sara Paxton and Pat Healy) stuck covering a decrepit hotel’s final weekend with round-the-clock shifts kill time by idly hunting the hotel’s legendary ghost. But the arrival of increasingly mysterious guests (including a psychic played by Top Gun pinup Kelly McGillis) suggests that the duo is in danger of becoming ghosts themselves. “The Innkeepers astonishingly creates characters who are not only specter-prey….Ghost movies like this, depending on imagination and craft, are much more entertaining than movies that scare you by throwing a cat at the camera.” (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times) Just announced: Actor Pat Healy will appear in person at the screening of The Innkeepers at 7 p.m. on Friday, February 17 in 4070 Vilas Hall. Healy’s career has included appearances in such major studio films as Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia, Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor, Terry Zwigoff’s Ghost World, David Gordon Green’s Undertow, Werner Herzog’s Rescue Dawn, and Andrew Dominik’s The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford. -

And Jill wants to know if Luke is ready to talk about marriage. The answer to that question becomes crystal clear when Luke and Kate unexpectedly find themselves alone for a weekend. DRINKING BUDDIES is written and directed by Joe Swanberg and stars Olivia Wilde, Jake Johnson, Anna Kendrick, and Ron Livingston. 2 Q&A WITH DIRECTOR JOE SWANBERG What was the inspiration for this project? The inspiration originally came from two places: The first was studio comedies of the early 1970's, specifically BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE and Elaine May's THE HEARTBREAK KID, which were both mainstream films (and big hits!) that portrayed complicated, interesting characters and adult points-of-view. The most important lesson I took from these films is that they never forgot to be funny, which earned them the space to also be complex and challenging.
