Jesuit Education in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (1565–1773)
journal of jesuit studies 5 (2018) 441-455 brill.com/jjs Jesuit Education in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (1565–1773) Jakub Niedźwiedź Jagiellonian University, Cracow [email protected] Abstract This article examines the impact of the Jesuit educational system on the culture of the multi-religious and multi-ethnic federation, through four problems. The first part of the paper presents the beginnings and development of the educational network and the Jesuit monopoly of education in the country. In the second part, it is shown how the Ratio studiorum was adapted to local conditions and how Latin culture was promoted in the Orthodox provinces of eastern Poland and Lithuania. One of the major consequences of these processes was the unification of a literary language and literature in Polish (Polish became the second language of Latinitas). The third part raises the question of the impact of rhetorical studies on political activity of the gen- try, through the formation of the citizen-orator ideal. The development of literature, theatre, music, and the sciences forms the subject of the fourth part, which also lists the main achievements of Jesuit scholars and alumni. In conclusion, some observa- tions are offered on the specific nature of Jesuit education in this part of Europe and its legacy after the dissolution of the Society of Jesus. Keywords Jesuits – Poland – Lithuania – early modern education – Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth – Jesuit colleges – Polish literature © niedźwiedź, 2018 | DOI:10.1163/22141332-00503006 This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the prevailing cc-by-nc license at the time of publication. -

Marianna Sanguszko Née Lubomirska (1693–1729) – Introduction to the Biography of the Overlooked Heiress to the Entail of Ostrog*
res historica 48, 2019 DOI: 10.17951/rh.2019.48.119-136 anna Penkała-Jastrzębska (Pedagogical University of Kraków) https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6386-8139 Marianna sanguszko née Lubomirska (1693–1729) – introduction to the Biography of the overlooked heiress to the entail of ostrog* Marianna z Lubomirskich sanguszkowa (1693–1729) – przyczynek do biografii niedocenianej dziedziczki ordynacji ostrogskiej Abstract The life of Marianna Sanguszko née Lubomirska has not been the subject of academic interest. Owner of a huge manor, sister of the owner of Ostrogski’s entail, sister of the Du- chess of Neuburg, and finally the wife of Pawel Karol Sanguszko, a Court Marshal of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, she never played a significant political role nonetheless. Little is known about her private life, activity and participation in the fight for the inheritance of the Entail of Ostrog. This paper is to determine the most important events which led direc- tly to Marianna and her husband Paweł Karol Sanguszko acquiring the rights to selected properties. An in-depth analysis of the historical source material reveals the complexity of the fight for the right to the Entail of Ostrog. From the moment he married Marianna in 1710, Sanguszko was an important political player, consistently accomplishing his objec- tives. Thanks to his spouse and the support she showed him, firstly in a conflict with her brother Aleksander Dominik Lubomirski, and then with his opponents who tried to prove his wrongful activities, Sanguszko became the administrator of a huge estate in the 1720s. Marianna herself was not politically involved, with her lively and industrious spouse ta- king care of the prolonged court trials. -

This library was generally re- garded as the most valuable private collection of old Spanish books in the world. Dr. Rennert was known chiefly as the bio- grapher of Lope de Vega, the founder of the Spanish national drama, and, as might be expected, his collection is especially rich in old editions of this famous playwright and poet who was born in 1565. The Crisis in the Arts of the Seventeenth Century: a Crisis Of
Journal of Interdisciplinary History, xl:2 (Autumn, 2009), 239–261. CRISIS IN THE ARTS Peter Burke The Crisis in the Arts of the Seventeenth Century: A Crisis of Representation? Because the term crisis in general and the idea of a seventeenth-century crisis in particular have been the objects of acute criticism, a formal deªnition is in order. One might speak, for instance, of a “crisis of conªdence”— in other words, a decline. However, conªdence is not easy to measure, and, in any case, it is necessary to ask, “Conªdence in what” (church, state, or humanity)? In the context of witch trials, discussed in this issue by Edward Bever, the phrase “crisis of con- ªdence” is a precise one, but it becomes vaguer when it is used about the arts. To avoid such a problem, the deªnition of crisis employed herein is a fairly precise one, close to the medical origins of the term in ancient Greece, where it referred to the moment in an illness when a patient was poised between death and recovery, or to seventeenth-century usage, exempliªed by a speech in the House of Commons in 1627 by Sir Benjamin Rudyerd about the “crisis of parliaments” that would determine whether the Parlia- ment would “live or die.” Burckhardt, perhaps the ªrst historian to make a serious use of the term, also used the metaphor of a fever.1 The pathological overtones of this metaphor, however, are an obstacle to understanding, and in what follows an attempt will be Peter Burke is Emeritus Professor of Cultural History and Life Fellow of Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge. -
