However, considering the character of my study I will do so in a sequel to this one and give only some essential data to help to ·enter' the novel. In the colophon, where the narrator explains the possible origins of the book, he writes: "If the papers (fragmentary, in any case, from which I have de vised a story, or a series of intersecting or skewed stories) have come down to us ..." At that mo- ment arrived an honorable woman who asked them what they wanted to do with me; they told her, “By God, she is a Huguenot who ought to be drowned.” Charlotte Arbaleste Duplessis-Mornay, Memoirs The judge was talking about the people who had been ar- rested and the sorts of disguises they had used. All of this terrified me. But my fear was far greater when both the priest and the judge turned to me and said, “Here is a little rascal who could easily be a Huguenot.” I was very upset to see myself addressed that way. However, I responded with as much firmness as I could, “I can assure you, sir, that I am as much a Catholic as I am a boy.” Anne Marguerite Petit Du Noyer, Memoirs The cover of this book depicting Protestantism as a woman attacked on all sides reproduces the engraving that appears on the frontispiece of the first volume of Élie Benoist’s History of the Edict of Nantes.1 This illustration serves well Benoist’s purpose in writing his massive work, which was to protest both the injustice of revoking an “irrevocable” edict and the oppressive measures accompanying it. It also says much about the Huguenot experience in general, and the experience of Huguenot women in particular. When Benoist undertook the writing of his work, the association between Protestantism and women was not new. -

YWMLS, 54: 500), indexes by subject the imagery of all the major Italian verse romances and poemi grandi, from the Morgante to La Secchia and Adone (including the Gerusalemme Conquistata as well as the Liberata, which though not strictly belonging to the Seicento will be of particular interest to students of the period). L’anima in barocco, ed. Carlo Ossola et al., T, Scriptorium, xxxviii + 278 pp., is an anthology of devotional texts, divided by topic, and including a substantial number of near-forgotten authors (Felice Passero, Gasparo Murtola) and some well known in their time but since forgotten altogether (Pietro Battista, Giovanni Bona, Giuseppe Girolamo Semenzi), accompanied by the editors’ sparse commentary; the anthology, it would appear from the preface, originates in University seminars, but its exact purpose and prospective readership escape me. Marc Fumaroli, L’E´ cole du silence: le sentiment des images au XVIIe sie`cle, Paris, Flammarion, 1994, 512 pp., focuses on the visual arts, but is also peppered with references to Italian baroque poetics (the Index lists Allacci, the Andreini, Boccalini, Bracciolini, Capaccio, Cesarini, Ciampoli, Eritreo, Marino, Mascardi, Murtola, Pallavicino, Stigliani, Strada, Testi) which provide much of the ‘rhetorical’ backbone of the argument, a slightly worrying fact given that what he says about these (and a number of late Cinquecento literary figures) appears to be second-hand and in many cases inaccurate. -

Escritor, religioso, diplomático y profesor de retórica, Tesauro es una figura central para com- prender la retórica del siglo XVII. El panegírico Il giudicio, un discurso académico del autor, aborda con lucidez y claridad el análisis de dos estilos de discurso oratorio: el familiar y el majestuoso, evaluando en ambos casos su peculiar belleza y eficacia persuasiva. Abstract (In this study the authors present and comment a brief text of Italian writer Emanuele Tesauro, one of the main erudites of the European Baroque Age. Jesuit priest, diplomat and Rhetoric professor, Tesauro is an outstanding figure of the XVIIth Century Rhetoric. Colton, Jr., our Library came into pos- session of the Spanish collection of the late Hugo A. Rennert, who was professor of romanic languages from 1885 until his death on December 31, 1927. Gustavo Saldanha – Ibict - Unirio, Brazil Giulia Crippa – Bologna University, Italy Concept Theory and Conceit Theory Ontology and Logology Between Conceptuality and Non- Conceptuality in Knowledge Organization Abstract: Knowledge Organization (KO) has a historically established construction based on a concept theory according to the Aristotelian model. It is from the Organon that the primary theoretical basis of documentary-language thinking is established. One can identify the construction of conceptual thinking in classical approaches such as Ranganathan's classification theory. More directly, Dahlberg's theory of concept proves the demarcating point of view of the Aristotelian foundation in KO. However, even in such approaches as Ranganathan's, one can also identify another theoretical tradition in classification theory concerned with constructing a non- conceptual approach. It is from Emanuele Tesauro that we can conceive a non-conceptual theory, establishing a given conceit theory. This research aims to point out the dichotomies and correlations between a concept theory and a non-conceptual one in KO. The research method is theoretical, structured from the perspective of a historical epistemology with a pragmatic background. At first, the historical-theoretical place of concept theory in the KO is determined. Later, the foundation of a non-conceptual theory (or conceit theory) is identified. Furthermore, the relationship between theories in historical and contemporary development in the classification theory is discussed. From the Aristotelian categories, one can understand a method for the relationship between signifier, meaning, and referent, and establish the associations of meaning between terms. The non-conceptuality theory can be historically identified in Emanuele Tesauro. From his Categorical Index, published in the Cannocchiale aristotelico, the condition of concept (and no-concept) is the apex of a variety of chain of rhetorical being, and it points to the creation and progressive unfolding of language figures (conceit elements). -

Journal of Interdisciplinary History, xl:2 (Autumn, 2009), 239–261. CRISIS IN THE ARTS Peter Burke The Crisis in the Arts of the Seventeenth Century: A Crisis of Representation? Because the term crisis in general and the idea of a seventeenth-century crisis in particular have been the objects of acute criticism, a formal deªnition is in order. One might speak, for instance, of a “crisis of conªdence”— in other words, a decline. However, conªdence is not easy to measure, and, in any case, it is necessary to ask, “Conªdence in what” (church, state, or humanity)? In the context of witch trials, discussed in this issue by Edward Bever, the phrase “crisis of con- ªdence” is a precise one, but it becomes vaguer when it is used about the arts. To avoid such a problem, the deªnition of crisis employed herein is a fairly precise one, close to the medical origins of the term in ancient Greece, where it referred to the moment in an illness when a patient was poised between death and recovery, or to seventeenth-century usage, exempliªed by a speech in the House of Commons in 1627 by Sir Benjamin Rudyerd about the “crisis of parliaments” that would determine whether the Parlia- ment would “live or die.” Burckhardt, perhaps the ªrst historian to make a serious use of the term, also used the metaphor of a fever.1 The pathological overtones of this metaphor, however, are an obstacle to understanding, and in what follows an attempt will be Peter Burke is Emeritus Professor of Cultural History and Life Fellow of Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge. -

Introduction: The Political Stakes of Eustache Le Noble’s Pasquinades In a letter dated August 5, 1694, French chief of police Gabriel Nicolas de la Reynie confesses his incapacity to prevent the publication of satirical pamphlets penned by then-imprisoned aristocrat Eustache Le Noble: Ce n’est pas la première fois qu’il a été défendu à cet auteur de mettre au jour des écrits de sa composition, ni la première fois qu’on a enlevé d’entre ses mains, pendant sa prison, les ouvrages de sa façon qu’il y vendait avec beau- coup de scandale. Il a toujours trouvé des protecteurs et des partisans qui ont cru qu’il était utile de laisser à cet homme la liberté d’écrire sur toutes sortes de matières. On ne sau- rait dire combien de manières il en a abusé, et à quel excès il ne s’est porté, ni répondre non plus qu’il se contienne à l’avenir. Statesmen and diplomats tackled the question. Their practical vision of the law is a necessary complement to legal doctrine. Louis XIV and Emperor Leopold I used incompatible and absolute claims, which started in private law and Spanish succession law. At the Peace of Utrecht, these arguments completely dissolved. The War of The Spanish Succession thus not only redesigned the political map of Europe. It altered the norm hierarchy in public law, strengthening international law as the framework of the “Société des Princes”. Introduction The War of the Spanish Succession (1701/1702-1713/1714) redesigned the political map of Europe. It sealed the definitive end of French encirclement by the Spanish Habsburgs. When Louis XIV died in September 1715, the heydays of the Spanish Monarchy were gone and a Bourbon King, his own grandson, reigned in Madrid. Both Spanish and French claims for universal monarchy had come to an endii. The Treaties of Utrecht and Rastadt/Baden created a balance of power on the continent between Versailles and Vienna, which was to last for 30 years. Finally, the war constituted the basis for British dominance as a commercial naval power, at the expense of the Dutch Republic. -
