Subjects and methods: An open label cohort study over a period of 12 weeks was performed on healthy adult female subjects. All subjects daily applied a peptide extract solution on their eyelids and eyebrow. They also attended a fortnightly microneedle session to apply the peptide extract solution on the eyelash and eyebrow. The length of the eyelash was determined using an eyelash ruler while the overall eyelash appearance was assessed using the GEA scale. The eyebrows appearance was evaluated using digital photography and assessed by two independent dermatologist while individual eyebrow follicle thickness and the presence of new eyebrow hair follicles were evaluated using the Micro skin and hair diagnostic device (EW-EWB-1007-307, Germany). Results: The peptide extract solution significantly increased the length of the eyelash by 3.7± 1.4mm (p = 0.014). There was a 100% improvement in the GEA scale evaluation, where 83% showed a one-grade improvement while the remaining 17% demonstrated a 17% improvement. Eyebrow analyser scans showed an increased thickness in individual eyebrow thickness and there were the presence of many new eyebrow hair follicles at the end of the 12 weeks. Conclusion: Peptide extract solution is a safe and efficient treatment to enhance eyelash and eyebrow appearance without causing any major adverse reactions. Hair is a derivative of the epidermis and consists of two distinct parts: the follicle and the hair shaft. The follicle is the essential unit for the generation of hair. The hair shaft consists of a cortex and cuticle cells, and a medulla for some types of hairs. Hair follicle has a continuous growth and rest sequence named hair cycle. The duration of growth and rest cycles is coordinated by many endocrine, vascular and neural stimuli and depends not only on localization of the hair but also on various factors, like age and nutritional habits. Distinctive anatomy and physiology of hair follicle are presented in this chapter. Extensive knowledge on anatomical and physiological aspects of hair can contribute to understand and heal different hair disorders. Keywords: hair, follicle, anatomy, physiology, shaft 1. Introduction The hair follicle is one of the characteristic features of mammals serves as a unique miniorgan (Figure 1). In humans, hair has various functions such as protection against external factors, sebum, apocrine sweat and pheromones production and thermoregulation. The hair also plays important roles for the individual’s social and sexual interaction [1, 2].

SÉRIE ANTROPOLOGIA 145 BLACK MUSIC OF ALL COLORS. THE CONSTRUCTION OF BLACK ETHNICITY IN RITUAL AND POPULAR GENRES OF AFRO-BRAZILIAN MUSIC José Jorge de Carvalho Brasília 1993 Black Music of all colors. The construction of Black ethnicity in ritual and popular genres of Afro-Brazilian Music. José Jorge de Carvalho University of Brasília The aim of this essay is to present an overview of the charter of Afro-Brazilian identities, emphasizing their correlations with the main Afro-derived musical styles practised today in the country. Given the general scope of the work, I have chosen to sum up this complex mass of data in a few historical models. I am interested, above all, in establishing a contrast between the traditional models of identity of the Brazilian Black population and their musics with recent attempts, carried out by the various Black Movements, and expressed by popular, commercial musicians who formulate protests against that historical condition of poverty and unjustice, forging a new image of Afro- Brazilians, more explicit, both in political and in ideological terms. To focus such a vast ethnographic issue, I shall analyse the way these competing models of identity are shaped by the different song genres and singing styles used by Afro-Brazilians running through four centuries of social and cultural experience. In this connection, this study is also an attempt to explore theoretically the more abstract problems of understanding the efficacy of songs; in other words, how in mythopoetics, meaning and content are revealed in aesthetic symbolic structures which are able to mingle so powerfully verbal with non-verbal modes of communication.

  • Treatment of Eyebrow Hypotrichosis Using Bimatoprost: a Randomized, Double-Blind, Vehicle-Controlled Pilot Study
ORIGINAL ARTICLE Treatment of Eyebrow Hypotrichosis Using Bimatoprost: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Vehicle-Controlled Pilot Study † KENNETH R. BEER, MD,* HILLARY JULIUS, PA,* MONICA DUNN, RN,* AND FRED WILSON,MS BACKGROUND The Food and Drug Administration has approved bimatoprost ophthalmic solution (0.03%) for the treatment of eyelash hypotrichosis. Previous reports of its efficacy in eyebrow hypotrichosis are anecdotal. OBJECTIVE To assess the efficacy and safety of bimatoprost 0.03% ophthalmic solution applied to the eyebrows in a randomized, double-blind, vehicle-controlled study. METHODS Subjects (n = 20) with mild to moderate eyebrow hypotrichosis enrolled in the study. One group (Bim) applied bimatoprost to each eyebrow daily for 9 months, and another applied vehicle nightly to each eyebrow for 5 months. Subjects in the latter group were re-randomized to apply bimatoprost (Veh-Bim Group) or vehicle (Veh Group) daily to each eyebrow for 4 months. The primary end point was investigator-assessed eyebrow appearance; secondary end points were subject-reported outcomes. RESULTS Investigator assessments showed significant improvements from baseline to 6 (p = .002) and 7 (p = .005) months for the eyebrows treated with bimatoprost. p-Values for the Veh-Bim and Veh groups were not significant at any time point. End-of-study subject satisfaction with eyebrow fullness or thickness and darkness or color was greater in the Bim group than in the Veh group. Adverse effects were not observed. CONCLUSION Bimatoprost 0.03% ophthalmic solution applied daily for 9 months improves the appearance of eyebrows noticeably more than vehicle, without side effects. This study was funded with a research grant by Allergan, Inc.
