El Oficial al Mando del Escuadrón de Gibraltar cede el mando

Se ha producido un cambio en el mando del Escuadrón de Gibraltar de la Royal Navy (Royal Navy Gibraltar Squadron, RNGS). El Capitán de Corbeta (Lieutenant Commander, Lt Cdr) Kyle Walkley ha transferido el mando al Capitán de Corbeta Lloyd Cardy.
El Capitán de Corbeta Cardy entró a formar parte de la Royal Navy en 2010 y, antes de unirse al RNGS en julio de 2019, sirvió como Oficial de Navegación (Navigating Officer) en la Fragata tipo 23 HMS Sutherland.
El Capitán de Corbeta Cardy ha pasado los dos últimos años como Oficial al Mando (Commanding Officer) del HMS Sabre y ahora ha tomado la responsabilidad como Oficial al Mando del Escuadrón de Gibraltar, para supervisar a los 26 integrantes del equipo y las embarcaciones que forman parte del RNGS.
Al tomar el mando, el Capitán de Corbeta Cardy declaró: “Me sitúo al mando del Escuadrón en un momento muy interesante, preparando las [embarcaciones] P2000 para el funcionamiento temporal antes de la llegada de nuevas naves hacia el final del próximo año”.
El Escuadrón de Gibraltar de la Royal Navy es el equipo de 26 miembros de la Royal Navy estacionado de forma permanente en el Peñón y opera los dos barcos de patrulla rápida HMS Scimitar y HMS Sabre, que pronto serán reemplazados por las dos embarcaciones P2000 HMS Pursuer y HMS Dasher, además de tres lanchas neumáticas rígidas (RHIB) tipo Pacific 24. El equipo es específicamente responsable de mantener la soberanía del Territorio Británico de Ultramar, además de proporcionar protección para el entorno marítimo de la zona.
El Capitán de Corbeta Walkley volverá al Reino Unido tras desempeñar una breve labor en la Base de las Fuerzas Británicas en Gibraltar (HQBF Gibraltar) para completar el curso de Oficial Principal de Combate (Principal Warfare Officer) en la base HMS Collingwood, cerca de Portsmouth, Inglaterra. A su marcha, Walkley manifestó: “Gibraltar ha sido un lugar maravilloso para desempeñar mi primer puesto de mando, y las personas con las que tenido la suerte de poder trabajar durante los dos últimos años lo han hecho aún mejor”.

CO RNGS HANDS OVER THE BATON
A change at the top has taken place within the Royal Navy Gibraltar Squadron (RNGS) as Lieutenant Commander (Lt Cdr) Kyle Walkley handed over the baton to Lt Cdr LLoyd Cardy.
Lt Cdr Cardy joined the Royal Navy in 2010 and, before joining RNGS in July 2019, he served as the Navigating Officer in the Type 23 Frigate HMS SUTHERLAND.
Lt Cdr Cardy has spent the last two years as the Commanding Officer of HMS SABRE and has now stepped up to take the mantle of Commanding Officer Gibraltar Squadron in charge of all 26 personnel and craft that are part of RNGS.
On taking command, Lt Cdr Cardy said: “I am taking over the Squadron at a very exciting time, bringing the P2000s online as an interim craft before the arrival of the new vessels towards the end of next year”.
The Royal Navy Gibraltar Squadron is the Royal Navy’s team of 26 personnel permanently based on the Rock who operate the two fast patrol boats HMS SCIMITAR and HMS SABRE, soon to be replaced by the P2000s HMS PURSUER and HMS DASHER, and three Pacific 24 RHIBs. The small team is specifically responsible for maintaining the sovereignty of the British Overseas Territory as well as providing force protection to the area’s maritime environment.
Lt Cdr Walkley will return to the UK after completing a short staff job at HQBF Gibraltar to complete the Principal Warfare Officer course at HMS COLLINGWOOD near Portsmouth. On his departure he said: “Gibraltar has been an amazing place to have my first Command, made even better by the people I have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to work with over the last two years”.
