Exercise of the Month Wood Chop

1. Start with the feet a little wider than hip distance apart, keeping the knees slightly bent, and bring the medicine ball to your left shoulder.

2. On an exhale, pull abs to spine, and “chop” the ball down diagonally across your body toward your right knee. Imagine you’re chopping some wood at this angle and the ball is your axe — the move is a bit percussive.

3. Focus on the rotation initiating in your torso.

4. Control the ball back up to the starting position. This completes one rep.

5. Remember you are moving with force but control. Don’t give in to the momentum of swinging the ball around. Do three sets of 15 reps on each side.

A Red Hot Warm Up

The HKFC U11/U12 girls were invited to play a warm up match against their Valley Fort counterparts at the SG Women’s Fast Fifteens tournament at King’s Park on 31st October. On a very warm day, our girls won an entertaining game five tries to two, having conceded the first try before muscling their way into the contest with some big hits and some cracking tries of their own. It was a particularly strong effort given how little rugby our girls, like so many teams in Hong Kong, have been able to play this season as a team. They were hugely persistent and committed in the tackle, play some lovely offloads on attack and are slowly but surely starting to play with width (depth is still a work in progress, but the coaches could hardly ask for more at this stage of a surreal season). The try scorers were Jem Wall, Lea El-asmar, Romane Bruneau, Bella Hague and Kellie Kong, but frankly this could hardly have been more of a team effort across the board. Well done to all.

WHO STOLE MY TREASUUUUURRREEEE!!!!????!?!?!?? As the sleeping giant (played by one of the coaches) roared, our boys and girls would flee from the giant’s den in all directions, each holding a “treasure” in the form of a foam rugby ball - sometimes two!

It’s great news that the “groups of 4” restriction was lifted and we could have up to 33 persons on the pitch, as we could kickstart our sessions for U4, being the last age group to resume training after the summer break: everybody is excited!

This is our second season since we started U4 in 2019/20 in partnership with Rugbytots (www.rugbytots.hk), and we are one of the very few clubs in Hong Kong with the U4 age group: it has been hugely popular amongst those toddlers, who are intrigued by the physics of a bouncing oval-shaped ball - aren’t we all? With our ever-growing waiting list, we might have to consider starting at dawn - another option which is more welcoming to the parents is to expand the session size.

When you see the kids chasing and swamping the coaches for “spaghetti” (tags attached to the coaches’ belts) with speed and agility, doing their “laundry” after the session in the HUGE “washing machine” (the rainbow play parachute), collecting a stamp and an apple as their reward and grinning from ear to ear after each session, it’s all worth it - even though you parents can’t sleep in on Sundays: agree?

Thank you coaches - see you next Sunday!

ith a bag full of ghoulish masks, devil’s tridents and other freakish W paraphernalia, Carlos the friendly ghost organized a Teams event to celebrate Halloween. A great new format saw The Vampires take a bite out of The Black Cats, The Witches flying high against The Pumpkins, The Ghosts gliding their way past Team 666, and The Devils tempting Trick or Treat into some wayward shots.

With bonus points being thrown around like newts’ gizzards at a witches’ coven, the result was largely irrelevant, but for the record The Pumpkins won with a blood curdling 23 victims, 8 more than second best team The Ghosts. The night’s MVP (Most Vampire-like Player) went to Eric Ho Ho Ho (Ed: I guess that would work better in a Xmas article...) who left puncture marks on all 7 opponents.

The night ended with a few glasses of pumpkin juice before the big one, the announcement of the Scariest Dressed Player, the winner to receive a free night of squash torture with Cloaked Carlos. Ghastly Graham thought he’d won by a process of elimination (no-one else bothered) but just before the witching hour Warlock Will arrived, in a pair of very scary tight shorts, to claim half the prize. Athlete of the Month ALEX FONG Former Olympic Athlete who competed at the Sydney Games 2000

his month we would like to highlight one of the HKFC Swim and TTriathlon VIPs Alex Fong.

An Olympic athlete-turned pop star, Alex has leveraged his unique career path and popularity to maximize his positive influence and contribution to society. “Water” has always been a mark of success for Alex. In 2007, a vist to Gansu Province in China with the charity A Drop of Life in 2007 inspired one of his greatest accomplishments to date.

After witnessing the difficulties of those struggling with water shortage, Alex decided to challenge himself to a 45km clockwise swim around Hong Kong Island to raise funds for the charity. To prepare for this daunting challenge, Alex spent nearly 18 months practicing swimming in the open water. During this period, he only accepted jobs that could allow him to keep up with the tight practice schedule. He endured a number of obstacles while training, including dehydration, headaches and seasickness. On 5th November 2019, Alex successfully finished the challenge, setting a new world record for the 45km journey, raising over HK$10.6 million (US$1.25 m) for the charity, bringing clean water to over 1 million people in Southeast Asia.

Alex also started a fitness blog on Weibo to share exercise and health tips, and has over 350 million post views across the region to date.

Favourite place to swim in HK: Now, it’s HKFC for sure. When I was a kid, HKU swimming pool at Sandy Bay, because we can see the sun set when we are training...

Post race treat: For a grown up like I am now? It’s always a pint of draft beer to begin with...

Most exciting race: 45km Swim Around HK Charity Challenge 2019. Because I wasn’t racing for myself. I was doing it for a greater cause...

Favourite HKFC meal: Burger!!!

We are so excited to announce that races have begun to open up in Hong Kong. On 1st November, we had our first competition since the onset of COVID at Deep Water Bay, with the popular Deep Water Bay Time Trial. Nicholas Gotard placed 3rd in the 46 and above category in the 1.4 mile race.
