Parish Council’s Newsletter Covering the parish wards of Barrs Court, , , Orchard, and Wraxall NEWSLETTER NO. 43 ~ WINTER 2015 CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE Welcome to another edition of the Parish Newsletter. I hope it finds all our residents not too stressed in the run up to Christmas! With the nights now drawing in, this is a prudent time to remember the importance of wearing highly visible clothing in the evening and also ensuring that for drivers and cyclists all lights etc are working properly. We have been blessed recently with very mild weather which has been unusual. This gives us all an opportunity to adequately prepare for the colder weather which will undoubtedly come our way. Remember to ensure that if we get ice and snow all your drives and paths are prepared to maintain a safe approach to your property. People coming to your door including postmen and utilities representatives are owed a duty of care and we have a responsibility for protecting those who are on our property. We have recently celebrated the successes of some of our residents and children with our well attended Parish Evening. This is an event that we hold each year in order to award residents for the best kept gardens and allotments. It gives us the opportunity to allow those that we support as a Parish Council, to show us the sort of activities they have been involved. It was great to have a stand from Avon Valley Railway, an organisation that has gone from strength to strength and is now recognised as one of the best tourist attractions in the region. We are very proud to support this in some small way and encourage them to continue in the good work they do to preserve our railway and attract tourists. Your Parish Councillors are now settling in well and beginning the next term of hard work. All of the committees are fully populated and of course are always open to public participation which is most welcomed. (see page 11 for meeting details). (continued on page 2) CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE (cont) We strive to represent you and love to receive feedback (good or bad) to ensure we are meeting your expectations. We continue to be challenged by budget restrictions particularly as South Gloucs Council has the same challenges and this naturally cascades down to us. However we continue to be as prudent as possible whilst maintaining the standard of service to the parish that is expected of us. You can be sure that that is our first priority. Finally on a sadder note you may be aware that new skate park which was built on the Golf Course site by South Gloucs Council has been vandalised by the setting fire of a moped on the ramps. This sort of mindless vandalism is sadly becoming more and more prevalent and is something none of us accept. We must work together to stamp this out and you can be sure your Parish Council will be working with the Police and the Safer and Stronger Groups to work this end. Sadly, the skate park has been closed whilst the damage is assessed and repaired when it will then re-open. I close this with the fervent wish that all have very Happy Christmas with family and friends and look forward to another year of achievements in Oldland Parish. Cllr Ron Hardie

COMMUNITY DOORSTEP CONTROL ZONES SAY NO TO DOORSTEP TRADERS!

If you live in the Kenilworth Drive and Causley Drive areas of Oldland Parish Council you will find inside your newsletter a COMMUNITY DOORSTEP CONTROL ZONE pack. Please read the leaflet carefully! Help stop uninvited traders knocking on your door by displaying the enclosed sticker in a prominent place. It is double sided and will stick to the glass in your door or window. For this to work effectively, the sticker must be in a place easily seen from your garden path or pavement. This initiative is funded by Oldland Parish Council working in partnership with Trading Standards and will be rolled out across the wider parish as part of a phased programme.

South Gloucestershire Trading Standards would like to reiterate the warning given recently to residents to be extra vigilant when dealing with unexpected callers at the front door.

Officers are aware that rogue traders are currently operating in the area and are offering to carry out, amongst other things, roofing work and tree services. It would appear that special offers are being made to those of retirement age to entice them into agreeing to work being undertaken.

Rogue trading incidents such as these are also linked to distraction burglaries, so we would ask that residents please look out for your neighbours, family and friends as well and report any suspicious activity.

There are a number of steps residents can take to try and avoid becoming the victim of a rogue trader.

 Be wary of traders who cold call and the deals they offer you – it is unusual for genuine tradesmen to need to cold call to drum up work!  Do not allow any unknown and unexpected visitor into your home. If possible, try to deal with them through a window or use a door chain.  Ensure your front and back doors are closed and locked if your attention is elsewhere.  If you agree to work you are afforded cancellation rights by law, and these should be given to you in writing. It is a criminal offence not to provide these in certain circumstances.  If you are unhappy or feel intimidated by the visitor – shut the door and call the police.

If you think you or someone you know has fallen victim to a rogue trader, please contact senior Trading Standards enforcement officer Neil Derrick immediately on 07801 200104 or 01454 864565.
