QUALIFICATIONS ORDINANCE for UNIVERSITY of GOTHENBURG Dnr GU 2021/138, Confirmed 26 June 2007, Last Updated 12 January 2021 QUALIFICATIONS ORDINANCE FOR UNIVERSITY OF GOTHENBURG Dnr GU 2021/138, confirmed 26 June 2007, last updated 12 January 2021. The Qualifications Ordinance for the University of Gothenburg applies from and including 1 July 2007 and includes both national rules (Higher Education Ordinance 1993:100, Qualifications Ordinance, Annex 2) and local rules. Its content has been adapted to the amendments made to the Higher Education Act (Swedish Code of Statutes – SFS 2006:173) and Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 2006:1053) resulting from the ‘Bologna Process’. These amendments include the following: • the division of all higher education into three levels: first-, second- and third-cycle • the introduction of new qualifications and degree requirements • the introduction of a new credit system, where one credit point corresponds to 1.5 credits At least one of the courses forming part of a qualification is required to have been completed after 1 July 2007 to be awarded a qualification in accordance with the amendments in the Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 2006:1053). The Swedish Government decides which qualifications may be issued at higher education institutions. Each higher education institution may then decide on local rules, e.g. about which main fields of study should be available and what nomenclature can be used with general qualifications. The Vice-Chancellor confirms and updates the Qualifications Ordinance for the University of Gothenburg every year. The faculty boards confirm new main fields of study and continuously update these in the Qualifications Ordinance. The following list of qualifications at the University of Gothenburg includes both national and local rules. 1. Local rules at the University of Gothenburg A Higher Education Diploma requires at least 60 credits in a progressively specialized study in the main field of study for the programme, of which at least 7.5 credits are to comprise an independent project (degree project). 1.1.2 Degree of Bachelor (Kandidatexamen) National rules pursuant to the Higher Education Ordinance A Degree of Bachelor is awarded after the student has completed the courses required to gain 180 credits in a defined specialization determined by each higher education institution itself, of which at least 90 credits are for progressively specialized study in the principal field (main field of study) of the programme. CREDENTIALING POLICY Policy Number: AD.01.02 SCOPE All Faculty: Tenured, Tenure Track, Visiting, Instructor, Adjunct and Artist in Residence and Program Administrators (those persons assigned the responsibility for the review, development and implementation of programs of study leading to degrees, minors and certificates.) PURPOSE SACSCOC Comprehensive Standard 3.7.1 requires that the institution employ competent faculty members qualified to accomplish the mission and goals of the institution. The University of St. Thomas must also demonstrate that our faculty (all tenured and tenure-track faculty as well as non-tenure track faculty and adjuncts) have the credentials to teach in the discipline to which they are assigned. This policy ensures that all faculty teaching in an academic setting at the University of St. Thomas have the necessary preparation, training, experience to teach our students, meet or exceed the minimum standards of SACSCOC in a manner consistent with the mission of the University of St. Thomas and the mission of the academic unit. The academic deans will determine for each faculty member if the field of study of their highest degree matches the field(s) of the courses each faculty member is teaching during the academic year. If there is a direct match, then no further justification is needed. If there is not a direct match, then a justification for a faculty member teaching a course outside his or her highest degree field of study needs to be provided and additional documentation must be obtained that show that the faculty member is qualified to teach each learning objective of the course(s) he or she is teaching.

  • Thinking About Terminal Professional Degrees in Art and Design
National Association of Schools of Art and Design Policy Analysis Paper THINKING ABOUT TERMINAL PROFESSIONAL DEGREES IN ART AND DESIGN October 1, 2004 The following statement is intended to facilitate discussion both within and outside the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. It is not a statement of accreditation standards or procedures, nor does it have any function in the accreditation process of the Association. Its purpose is to provide an analytical policy review of a number of issues associated with terminal degrees in the fields of art and design. INTRODUCTION For many years, the field of art and design has offered and recognized two terminal degrees: the Master of Fine Arts and the Doctor of Philosophy. The Master of Fine Arts is awarded primarily in fields of studio practice and considered the professional terminal degree in those fields. The Doctor of Philosophy is awarded in fields of academic practice that focus on visual content. The Ph.D. is the research terminal degree. This basic structure a professional and a research terminal degree is shared with many other fields. In the last few years, many concerns about graduate degree titles and content have been raised and discussed. Among these are the prestige associated with specific titles; ways to develop degrees that combine professional studies, scholarship, and research; approaches to subject mat- ter from multiple disciplinary perspectives; and how to develop and strengthen current programs. These and other issues are not always easy to resolve, either on a specific campus or in terms of national policies and frameworks. Issues of content, resources, and esteem can mix in volatile ways.
