MIDWEEK MATCH REPORTS

John Gorman writes FLEET SPURS 2-0 SOLENT UNIVERSITY FC SOLENT’S poor start to the season continued as a change of Competition bought no change to the results as they exited the Hampshire Senior Cup (and missed out on a trip to Eastleigh in the next round) when going down 2-0 to Sydenhams/Wessex old boys Fleet Spurs at Kennels Lane. The home side play in the Combined Counties League Division One, a step below the University, but have made a decent start to the season and deserved their win on the night. Both sides started brightly with Fleet’s Jacob Bellmaine burying a shot in Solent keeper Alex Londors’ midriff and the visitors’ Ethan Taylor firing over before Londors was at full stretch to keep out an effort from Adam Bellmaine. Solent then had the first chance of the evening when Tam Demunga was allowed to run on from what looked a suspiciously offside position only to shoot wide with just the keeper to beat. With twelve minutes gone Solent were made to pay for the miss as Rob Parrott played the ball over the top of the defence and Andre SMITH lobbed the ball over Londors who was rather in no mans land. Smith, whose pace and control made him a threat all evening, bounced a cross come shot on the top of the crossbar and the visitors were very much on the back foot before gaining a foothold in the game midway through the half. Taylor was stopped by a well-timed last ditch tackle by Naman Nasir and the home side survived three corners in quick succession with their keeper, who was a little below the regulation height, struggling in the crowded area. Solent wasted a free kick on the edge of the box and suddenly found themselves two goals down. Jack Church made a long run down the right, Smith took over and his cross to the far post was headed home by Liam JUPP, who was far from the tallest player in the box. Taylor was denied by keeper Mike Cadle before a cross was deflected in to Demunga’s path some eight yards from goal but the shot was pulled wide of the post and has to be counted as a miss. There was just time for a childish tantrum from Fleet’s James Scott before the half time whistle sounded with the home side two goals to the good.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

HT 2-0 No doubt reminded of the position at half time Solent rook the game to Fleet on the restart with Taylor, who too often lacked support, twice crowded out and a Demunga cross well held by Cadle before the same player was wide with an acrobatic overhead effort. Smith reminded all of his skill with a fierce drive that was well turned round the post by Londors following a sweeping three man move and the game began to drift away as the temperature began to fall – and it is still August! The Officials them took centre stage as the referee for reasons not apparent blew his whistle, the assistant on the stand side, who had a poor game, rushed on to the playing area, the referee spoke to the Solent Bench on the far side of the pitch and then re-started the game with a dropped ball. All very strange. There was just time for Demunga to fire high and wide before the final whistle came with Fleet still two goals to the good and deserving of their victory. FT 2-0 Solent have lost a number of good players and will be hoping for reinforcements soon for without same their return to the search for League points will not get any easier. On a slightly cynical note the home side have never enjoyed great support and last night’s admission charges were raised high above our Division One prices “because the Officials fees would be higher than usual”. Perhaps they should consider why the attendances are so low ?

Roger Allen writes LYMINGTON TOWN 1-0 ALRESFORD TOWN BOTH sides made changes for this Hampshire Senior Cup fixture and it was perhaps predictable that the club that made the least changes – Lymington – dominated the game in terms of shots at goal. In fact they twice had the ball in the net during the first 15 minutes by Mickey Finch and Steve Flynn but in both cases they were ruled out for offside. Apart from these two chances and one free kick from Mike Gosney which was parried to safety, Lymington’s aim was decidedly off with more balls ending in the car park than within the ground perimeter. All the front & midfield men were guilty of these missed opportunities. As for Alresford, they enjoyed their share of possession but did not create any chances that forced Henry Newman for Lymington into a save. HT 0-0 After the break Lymington things carried on much as before except for the fact that Lymington adjusted their radar and got several shots on target. However they were met with a very competent keeper in Declan McCarthy who looked set to thwart all their efforts until just after the hour mark. At that point Dom Falco chased a long ball out of defence and was able to square it to FLYNN who managed to find a yard of room to place a shot across McCarthy into the far corner. McCarthy continued to deny Lymington with a mixture of saves with both feet and hands but he was powerless to stop a Gosney shot that cannoned back across goal and into play off the inside of a goal post. In stoppage time Alresford forced two corners but their belated pressure ended when a header drifted wide of a post. FT 1-0

MIDWEEK ROUNDUP

Midweek was devoted entirely to the Hampshire Senior Cup with twelve ties on Tuesday – there should have been thirteen but electrical problems in the area led to Newport’s tie with Bournemouth being postponed – and a further three on Wednesday. There were some interesting results on Tuesday with three games being decided by Kicks from the Penalty Mark to use FA jargon – to everybody else they are penalty shootouts! Petersfield and East Cowes Vics struck a blow for Division One with victories over Premier Division sides while Whitchurch and US Portsmouth held their higher ranked opponents for ninety minutes. Petersfield won by the odd goal in three at Brockenhurst with the home side’s goal coming from a penalty and Petersfield aided by an own goal. Vics travelled to

Hamble Club where they suffered a horrendous mauling in the League a couple of seasons ago and went 2-0 up through Jimmi Burton. The experienced duo of Nathan Lynch and Barry Mason bought the scores level but it was the visitors who triumphed by 4-3 in the ensuing shoot out to claim a second round tie at Gosport Borough. At Fareham, in something of a local derby with US Portsmouth, it was three each at full time -six different scorers – with a 4-3 outcome in Fareham’s favour from the dreaded penalties. Whitchurch perhaps came even closer at Fleet Town as it took a last minute goal from the Premier Division side to snatch a draw at four goals apiece. Taylor Watts notched a hat trick for Fleet and Corey Cherrett two for the visitors before the home side progressed via the penalty shootout (4-2). In two all Premier Division meetings Baffins Milton Rovers defeated Tadley 2-1 and a Steve Flynn goal gave Lymington victory over Alresford at New Milton with the two winners now meeting in the next round. AFC Stoneham, led by a Scott Hills hat trick, won 5-0 at Ringwood and Bashley also scored five against Romsey with two goals apiece for Will Prior and Harry McGrath and the visitors scoring just one in reply. Andover New Street ensured Totton & Eling’s poor start to the season continued by scoring three without reply at Millers Park – two goals for Shane Lock – which just leaves the three ties involving Clubs from outside our League. Horndean travelled to Farnborough and defeated Cove by the odd goal in three while Hythe & Dibden enjoyed home advantage and a 4-2 win over Eversley & California with Zac Willis scoring twice. But as with Totton & Eling, Solent University’s poor start to the season continued with a two goal defeat at Sydenhams Old Boys Fleet Spurs, who earned themselves a trip to Eastleigh in the next Round. Three games on Wednesday evening and two more penalty shoot-outs. The game that finished in the conventional manner was at Fawley where the hosts found Cowes Sports too strong, the Islanders returning home with a 3-0 victory to their credit. Across the other side of Southampton and a spirited display by Andover Town at Follands. After ninety minutes it was three goals apiece, two goals for the home side by Matt Burt, but the home side proved more efficient from the spot converting four to Andover’s three. Further east and a late Luke Perkins goal gave First Division Alton a share of the spoils at the end of normal time at AFC Portchester only for the hosts to prevail 7-6 in a rather lengthy penalty shootout. The First Round of the Hampshire Senior Cup now completed but for two ties. Christchurch face the Royal Navy in a couple of weeks time and the postponed tie between Newport and Bournemouth will be re- arranged in due course.

SYDENHAMS LEAGUE CUP

The Sydenhams League Cup becomes the fourth Competition to enter this season’s fixtures when a mixture of First and Second Round ties provides next week’s midweek football. There are five First Round ties with one all Premier Division, one all First Division and three cross Division meetings. The Premier Division tie sees Horndean cross the Solent to meet Cowes Sports with neither side having perhaps started the season as well as they would have wished and the result could go either way.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

Petersfield entertain fellow First Division side Verwood who have started the season well, but it is a long journey and again the result could go either way. The Premier Division have home advantage in two of the remaining ties with AFC Stoneham at home to Alton and Alresford hosting Laverstock & Ford. Stoneham have won two of their games in the higher sphere to date and Alton are happier at home whilst Alresford have a one hundred per cent League start and should prove too strong despite Laverstock’s fine performance at Hythe & Dibden last Saturday. The Premier Division side on the road, are Solent University FC who make the short trip to Totton & Eling with both sides, as this is written, seeking their first win in any Competition to date. Eight ties in the second Round with three involving meetings between Clubs in the Premier Division. Holders Baffins Milton Rovers have been handed a tough draw as they set out in the defence of the Trophy with a trip to Bashley, never an easy side to beat on their own soil, but the Portsmouth based side have reached the Final twice in the last three seasons and cannot be under-estimated at any time. Christchurch, after a good win in the League at Stoneham, travel to Fareham with the Creeksiders having started the season in fine style while AFC Portchester, whose start to the season, in contrast, has been rather stuttering, could face a difficult evening at Tadley Calleva, always strong on their own ground. Three ties involving Division One Clubs as well with Andover Town facing a derby at Bemerton Heath. The latter have not really built on their opening day win but could prove too strong on the night. Hythe & Dibden and Ringwood meet at Clayfields and home advantage may hold sway with both sides having started the season well and it could be anybody’s game at Burnaby Road when Follands visit US Portsmouth. The home side are always strong in their own surroundings but their visitors have strengthened their squad in the close season to good effect. The last two ties see Premier Division sides at home to Division One opposition. Pewsey Vale make the long journey to Hamble Club and may find the evening rather difficult while Downton head to Bournemouth with a possible chance of an upset. All to play for and good luck to all.

WEEKEND MATCH REPORTS

John Gorman writes WINCHESTER CITY 1-1 AFC STONEHAM AN FA Cup clash between two Clubs who last season were two levels apart and are still one level apart following Stoneham’s promotion, but any neutral watching on the evening would have struggled to decide which side was the “higher placed”. The visitors matched their hosts in every respect, fully deserved their draw and in many eyes perhaps deserved to win and they certainly earned a second attempt on Tuesday 3 September. A pleasant evening and a surprising lack of traffic helped towards an attendance in excess of two hundred and fifty who saw the hone side start the better. Oli Bailey overhit a cross from a promising position and despite Stoneham’s neat passing play was largely in the visiting half though there was no threat on either goal in the opening ten minutes. A low drive from Callum Laycock was saved at full stretch by home keeper Ryan Price and at the other end Bailey dragged his shot across the face of the goal after fastening on to a Jamie Barron through ball. Stoneham

Sunday, 25 August 2019 19/20 Edition #08 Page 10 of 20

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS came more in to the game which was temporarily halted as the referee held a long discussion with an errant player before Winchester hit back to finish the half the stronger. IK Hill was stopped by weight of numbers after a long run with well-placed team mates screaming for a pass – that was to happen more than once in the evening – Ollie Griggs sent Danny King clear and the low cross was turned round the post by keeper Matt Fredericks and another cross from the same source caused a lengthy scramble in the Stoneham area. But they survived and the half time whistle came with the game still goalless. HT 0-0 The second half started with efforts at both ends – Stoneham’s Scott Hills shot smothered at full stretch and Keith Emmerson inches too high from distance – before Josh Clark was stopped by a last ditch tackle from a home defender and Hills forced Price in to another full length save. Stoneham, strong in the tackle, were winning the midfield and beginning to dominate proceedings though Laycock did himself and his Club no favours by collecting a caution for simulation – the contact was less than minimal! Bailey hit the inside of the post and saw Fredericks superbly save his effort from the rebound but the purple shirts were quickly at the other end with Price saving bravely at Laycock’s feet. A visiting penalty appeal was probably rightly turned down and with ten minutes left came the first goal which, despite Stoneham’s pressure came from the home side. BARRON, playing in an advanced role found space on the edge of the area and fired across Fredericks to find the bottom corner of the net very much against the run of play. A long diagonal cross from Aaron Dunne was headed over by Clark and that looked to be the visitors last chance until the home side failed to completely clear a corner, the ball was returned in up and under style, the defence stood still and Matt PALMER showed considerable composure and no little skill to volley the ball past Price with the clock on or past the ninety minute mark. An acceptable amount of stoppage time and all square at the finish – certainly no more than Stoneham deserved and they may fancy their chances in their own ground. FT 1-1 Anyone who reads these semi-literate offerings will be aware that the writer is a master of what are known as “typos” so it was encouraging to see that others also suffer. There were some very good pen pictures of the home players in the Matchday Programme with one being described as a 9 year-old forward who has already played at Conference South level. Obviously a Child Prodigy.

Gary Day writes CHRISTCHURCH 1-2 BADSHOT LEA A Friday evening visit to Christchurch early in a season has become almost a feature now and the weather was very favourable as the local side entertained Badshot Lea for a place in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup. The home side started well when Graham made his way into the box and was tripped by Hawker and the referee gave a penalty. This gave ‘Church an excellent opportunity but, although Graham put his laces through it, the ball did find a net of a kind – the high netting behind the goal as he ballooned it way over the bar. So, that fifth minute chance went begging but Christchurch did nudge in front within a further couple of minutes when Blake received a ball in from the left and played it on to BUTLER who placed his shot well, guiding it high into the corner of the net. Christchurch continued to dominate as a sweet move saw Blake work his way into the box, he got a fortunate rebound from an attempted clearance but the ball went agonisingly wide of the visitors’ net. Badshot thought a foul should have been given in midfield but play went on and ‘Church almost scored as Satterley got a touch to Graham’s low ball to the near post, but it was deflected for a corner. Ohameje

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS then tried a lunging header that went wide of the visitors goal. Only 16 minutes of the game had elapsed at that point. The pattern of the game gradually changed from there as the visitors, who could have been a few goals behind, got more into it. However, the homesters finished the first half strongly as a distant Neale effort picked up a deflection and went just wide. From the corner, the ball came in and a Walker header clearly struck a defender on his outstretched arm but this was not seen by the officials. HT 1-0 The home side created successive chances as Blake forced Lea keeper Lunn to a low save and, soon after, following a good headed clearance in defence by Flanighan, the ball came to interval sub Dodd who’s low 20- yard effort went just wide. The visitors continued to work hard and the home side’s narrow lead was eventually pegged back when CARTER cut across and let fly with a fine 25-yard effort that went into the corner and, now 73 minutes on, a replay in Surrey was looking on the cards. But no, the confident visitors were now on the ascendancy with Medcraft shooting just wide. That proved to be a warning for Christchurch as Badshot netted again on 79 minutes. A poor back-pass was too short and Medcraft got to the dead ball line, skipped past a challenge by the keeper and laid a pass across goal where CADETE coolly slotted home. Neale tried to get his side back in it but his low shot through a ruck of players picked up a touch and went wide. Christchurch’s Ohameje was sent off late on for violent conduct after the ball had gone and Neale dragged a stoppage time effort wide for Christchurch. FT 1-2 When you have your opponent on the ropes then you must grasp the opportunity and finish the job. It might not have looked possible early on but, consequently, Badshot recovered the situation to the extent that they progress into the next round of the FA Cup.

Roger Allen writes HYTHE & DIBDEN 2-1 HORNDEAN HAVING seen Hythe deservedly beat Portchester in the last round, when I started the report with the words "This was a well deserved victory by the side from the lower League", at half time in this game, I was ready to start this report with the same words. However this was the proverbial game of two halves as Hythe were forced onto the back foot by a rampant Horndean in the second period. In the first half Hythe were allowed to play their football as Horndean sat off them and the home side took advantage in the 7th minute when a cross to the far post was returned across goal by Rich BRIDLE. The shot was not powerful but it squeezed between players in the goal area and into the net. Horndean had chances to equalise notably through Bobby Scott who shot over and Tyler Burns whose header struck a post. Jack Lee for Horndean had a goal ruled out and a fierce shot from Bobby Scott was parried away by Hythe keeper, Josh Cotton. On 33 minutes the Horndean goal had an amazing escape as two Hythe players failed to put the finishing touch to a corner from point blank range, but on 37 minutes they established a two goal advantage. There seemed no danger as BRIDLE picked up the ball and shot from fully 35 yards. However the shot was not hit cleanly and the swerve and bounce deceived goalkeeper Lloyd who only succeeded in pushing the shot into the corner of the goal. Before half time Hythe had two further chances to extend their lead as the normally reliable Sammy Woodward shot wide when in the clear and they were denied what appeared to be a clear penalty for hands by an unsighted referee. HT 2-0 Having dominated possession in the first half, Hythe were immediately put on the back foot at the start of the second as Ryan Hayter was cautioned for a rash challenge on the edge of the penalty area. Although the free kick came to nothing, it was the prelude for a sustained period of Horndean pressure. However both sides had chances which were coming thick and fast in a very open game. Woodward & Bridle were wide and high for the home side and Jack Maloney and Connor Duffin did the repeat act for the 'Dean.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

At half time Horndean had brought on two subs who both provided more athleticism to their side's play and on 63 minutes they got their reward. MALONEY was at the left corner of the penalty area when he unleashed a low shot into the goal. Connor Duffin had two chances to equalise but he shot straight at keeper Cotton with the first then Cotton produced a fine save at the expense of a corner. Hythe were now feeling the pressure as evidenced by the keeper at one stage advising one of his defenders in no uncertain terms to get rid of the ball. In the final minutes Horndean were pressing forward leaving gaps at the back and on three occasions Hythe had clear opportunities to make the game safe but they conspired to do everything but put the ball in the net when this seemed to be the simplest thing to do. FT 2-1

Mike Robins writes VERWOOD TOWN 1-6 BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS HARLEQUINS ran out as convincing winners in hot conditions at Potterne Park and could easily have added to their tally but wasted several chances with wayward finishing. The visitors took the lead on five minutes when Scott HASSELL found himself in space at close range latching on to a long throw from Eddie Perrett, whose missiles caused the Potters some difficulty throughout the afternoon. It was a somewhat difficult first half for Verwood as they weathered the storm for long periods and but for some fine saves from Isaac Haigh could’ve been on the end of a bigger defeat, and he made two notable stops in the first half hour. At the other end a timely challenge by Hassell kept out a chance with Tyler Rutten shaping up to shoot following a through ball from Ethan Maddocks. Bemerton extended their lead five minutes before the break when Ben WHITE squeezed the ball home from a low cross at close range, just moments after Bennett had failed to find the target when well placed. HT 2-0 The introduction of two changes for Verwood seemed to change their luck, as the opening spell of the second half looked like they may claw a way back into the game, and indeed on 52 minutes a strike from wide by Owen NICHOLSON flew into the top corner of the net to make it 1-2. Just a couple of minutes later a Vint header flashed wide of the mark and a Nicholson free kick from around 22 yards also failed to trouble Creese in the Bemerton goal. This was perhaps the last real chance for the Potters as from hereon in the visitors began to get on top again, and the signs were there again when Hassell had a free header on the hour mark that didn’t trouble Haigh. However on 68 they die extend their lead to 3-1 when a Rawkins free kick to the back post saw WHITE crash the ball home in a crowded goalmouth, and Haigh did really well moments later to tip over a Burgess effort following a pinpoint delivery from Rawkins. Another HASSELL header from a corner followed with around 18 minutes to go, and Finnigan was denied after a mistake from Coelho allowed the striker time to steady himself, but the defender recovered and the opportunity was gone. With time running out Ryan LEWIS was on hand to make it 1-5 when he found himself in space close to the penalty spot at the end of a Perrett long throw. To rub salt into the wounds FINNIGAN then wrapped up the win with a couple of minutes left with a composed volleyed drive after a delightful cross field ball from Burgess. FT 1-6

John Gorman writes THATCHAM TOWN 7-1 ANDOVER NEW STREET WHEN you move up a level in the Football Pyramid the difference us always noticeable and at our level the climb from Step Five to Step Four is the most marked. It is a different world in terms of facilities, travel, skill, Sunday, 25 August 2019 19/20 Edition #08 Page 13 of 20

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS and commitment with the added bonus or problem of money being available to strengthen sides and Andover New Street encountered all of that on their visit to Thatcham in the FA Cup. In truth the score was slightly misleading as the tiring visitors conceded three goals in the last fifteen minutes but overall, they had no real answer to the pace and attacking ability of their ex-Wessex opposition. On a very hot day and an immaculate playing surface, Street, already without the influential midfield pairing of Callum Sweeney and Jazz Beavis, suffered a further blow when skipper Jamie Coleman limped out of the warmup causing a late and hasty re-arrangement to the line-up. The home side were quickly on the attack with a free kick pushed behind by keeper Chris Wing and Joe Selman lifting the ball over the bar after a poor back pass had left Wing stranded. Street fought back with Shane Lock and Luke Hooper having shots blocked. Jay Silver forced long serving keeper Paul Strudley to sprawl full length to save but the home side were having more of the possession and took the lead after eighteen minutes, albeit somewhat fortunately, when SELMAN’s hopeful cross was sliced in to his own net by Nathan Rae. Wing saved bravely at Kyle Tooze’s feet and Silver was only inches wide from distance at the other end. A drinks break came and went and Matt Scott twice made saving tackles before New Street had a free kick some twenty-five yards from goal that led directly to them going two goals down. The ball rebounded fiercely off the defensive wall and with the Street defence at odds after the corner Felipe BARCELOS raced away and slotted the ball past the advancing Wing. Thatcham were spreading the ball from side to side and creating space and Wing was fortunate when he left his area for a ball he was never going to reach but redeemed himself with a superb save to deny Barcelos a second goal. Lock’s persistence won him a shooting chance with Strudley equal to the effort before SELMAN’s speed took him through a retreating defence for a fine solo goal and to make the score 3-0 with the half in its dying seconds, though there was still time for one of the Assistants, who wore a cap throughout, to call the referee some seventy yards for a lengthy discussion that resulted in Lock being cautioned. The striker looked suitably bemused. HT 3-0 The players were back on the field some two to three minutes before the officials for the second half with New Street making a change after Jamie Pollard suffered an injury just before the break. A Thatcham free kick did not get past the wall and a Jay Silver cross was headed narrowly past his own post by a home defender. Both Tooze and Scott Rees went close with headers before goal number four after fifteen minutes, Barcelos sent Tooze in to the box, Matt Scott’s tackle was marginally late and the penalty decision right though the booking was harsh but that is the rule and BARCELOS stroked the spot kick low in to the corner of the net. Inside two minutes Street pulled a goal back with a confident finish from Luke HOOPER though he looked yards offside when the ball was played forward, Street kept battling though- having far less of the possession and nearly had a second goal when Silver, again looking well offside, saw his shot rebound from the keeper’ legs on to the post and away. The Thatcham number five, shown on the team sheet as Zac Westlake but looking more than suspiciously like former Andover defender Curtis Angell, who was named among the substitutes, was booked for airing his views on the matter. After another drinks break and the substitution of Tooze for his own good - having already been cautioned he produced a couple more untidy challenges - Thatcham rather wrapped the game up with three goals inside five minutes. A good advantage by the referee allowed SELMAN to claim number five and the scorer then turned provider with a pass that allowed Scott REES to make the tally six. The seventh came rather out of nowhere, REES volleying home from thirty yards and the final whistle was probably a relief to all. Street were by no means disgraced, they never gave up and the heads never went down but it was a standard of football above what they encounter week by week – and on the day it was too much. FT 7-1 One final point. One hesitates to criticise Officials – in the vast majority of cases they are as good at refereeing as the platers are at playing which is all one can ask. But there is an oft-advanced theory that when making the appointments for matches at this stage of the competitions the Referees are appointed on merit and the assistants by postcode. That could well have been the case for the referee never missed a trick all afternoon but the Assistants were far from the required standard.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

WEEK FOUR ROUND UP

FA Cup week again with two ties on Friday evening. Christchurch entertained Badshot Lea from the Combined Counties League and missed a penalty before Callum Butler gave them the lead only for the visitors to score two late goals and take the tie. AFC Stoneham more than held Winchester on the latter’s ground and indeed dominated the second half but things looked bleak when Jamie Barron gave the hosts the lead ten minutes from time but Matt Palmer scored a very late and deserved equaliser to earn the Purples another chance in ten days’ time. Eight further ties on Saturday with four more Clubs joining Stoneham in the draw for the next round. Fleet Town turned League form somewhat on its head with a three-goal win over Baffins Milton Rovers and Portland triumphed in another all-Sydenhams tie with a four three win over Hamworthy United. Four different scorers for the winners, including the usual names of Jamie Symes and Ryan McKechnie, while Eddie Hodge scored twice for the visitors. An upset at Clayfields where, in front of an attendance close to 150, Hythe & Dibden defeated Horndean by the odd goal in three courtesy of two Rich Burdle goals to progress further in the Competition than ever before. Fareham were the fourth winners with another away success as after winning at Westbury in the last round a Simon Woods goal saw them home at Combined Counties Knaphill. On the other side of the coin Lymington went down 3-2 at Binfield and Bournemouth found Bracknell Town far too strong and conceded five goals without reply at Victoria Park. A lone Marvin McLean goal gave Sholing success in a hard-fought local derby at Hamble Club whilst Andover New Street, like Bournemouth, suffered in the sunshine with Thatcham winning 7-1 at Waterside Park. The FA Cup reduced the Premier Division Programme to just four games and Alresford retained top spot in the table and their one hundred per cent record with a three-goal win at Solent University, which leaves the Students still seeking their first point. Brockenhurst have played a game less than Alresford but also have a one hundred per cent record after their 4-2 win at Cowes, Rafael Ramos scoring twice, while Shaftesbury secured their first win of the season beating Tadley 2-0 with goals from Michael Walker and Ben Wood, Things however do not get any better for Amesbury as they suffered another heavy home defeat with Bashley winning 5-1 and having five different names on the scoresheet The Division One fixtures also kicked off on Friday with a seven-goal thriller on the Waterside with Fawley defeating Ringwood by four goals to three. Pete Southwick and Steve Green shared the home goals and Ringwood, after taking seven points from their first three games have now lost two on the trot. On Saturday Downton moved to the top of the table with a comprehensive 6-3 win at East Cowes Victoria. The Island side had gained a deserved point against Bemerton a week earlier but found fresh Wiltshire opposition a different matter in a game that included two hat tricks- Robbie Owen for the winners and Ryan Gregory for the Vics. Alton again demonstrated their liking for home comforts as their third home win of the season, 2-0 over Follands, propelled them to second place in the table. US Portsmouth are third after a hard earned 3-2 win at Laverstock; five different scorers – and Romsey showed signs of returning to last season’s form with a 5-2 defeat of Newport and a second hat trick in the League so far for Liam Magee. Andover Town and Whitchurch both claimed single goal victories on the road, a Josh Bertie goal giving the former the points at New Milton but the scorer of Whitchurch’s goal at Petersfield has not been reported at time of writing, leaving just two high scoring games to finish the division. Totton & Eling, having lost their first four games, suddenly found form with a 7-2 win over Pewsey Vale – a hat trick for James Matthews and two for John McAuley with Jesse Walters scoring both Pewsey’s goals – and Bemerton re-discovered their shooting boots with a 6-1 win at Verwood with both Scott Hassell and Ben White scoring twice, all of which leaves Vics and Pewsey with one point apiece at the bottom of the table. Sadly, some attendances again not reported but on the brighter side congratulations to those sides still in the FA Cup. We now wait and see as to whether the FA’s draconian regionalisation of the Competition will ensure they meet after the draw, which we believe to be 13:00 on Tuesday.
