MIDWEEK MATCH REPORTS

Gary Day writes NEWPORT IOW 6-1 EAST COWES VICTORIA TENANTS played host to owners as Newport, at home, met East Cowes at the latter’s Beatrice Avenue Ground on a sweltering August Bank Holiday afternoon. A healthy crowd turned out. There was a blistering start to the game as the score was 1-1 and there was a red card shown, all in the opening eight minutes! Vics took the lead on three minutes when they were awarded a free-kick for a trip on Ahmed. BUTCHER took it and it was a ‘beauty’, neatly placed from just outside the box. For Vics though, that was as good as it was going to get as within three further minutes, a silly clash near to the half-way line between Newport’s Craig and Vics’ Harris put the Vics down to ten men, the old adage of - if you raise your arm then you run the risk - the Newport man getting a yellow for his part. Port were soon level when Kelly pumped a long cross into the Vics box and found SAMPSON who scored with a neat header at the far post. Only 15 minutes had elapsed when Port took the lead and a lovely ‘pass and move’ effort it was too, starting in midfield - Browne to Craig to Triggs, then back to Browne who located CRAIG who got into space and netted with a neat shot well into the corner. Ahmed worked an opening for Vics that was deflected for a corner whilst Port’s Wright put in Kelly but Vics keeper Steinborn-Busse was down to save. A Newport goal did come soon when Kelly played a free-kick in, the keeper punched the ball out low but only off SAMPSON who netted his second goal. Browne and Kelly had efforts just wide as Newport, taking full advantage of their extra player, used the width of the pitch effectively. Vics tried to hit back as Chapman made a good run and found Burton who played it on to Ahmed but he shot at Port keeper Streeter. Triggs fired wide for Port following a good run and lay-off by Craig. HT 3-1 The pace of the game slacked off a bit in the second half and Ahmed made a good run and found Burton who drove just past the post for Vics. Wright was substituted for Port and his replacement TAYLOR, received a Craig pass and struck a delightful first-time chip shot which floated into the far corner within thirty seconds of his introduction - you can’t get a better impact substitution than that - it was all in the Newport game plan, of course! It was now 4-1. Newport created further opportunities - Steinborn-Busse was out to save at Triggs’ feet, Browne set himself but shot at the keeper whilst Browne then tried a turning effort that went high over the bar. Next, the ever- dangerous Craig put a ball in that went straight across the face of the Vics goal and it was recycled with Wright’s effort being blocked. Newport continued to dominate as Lamb tried an excellent firm effort from distance on the left which Steinborn-Busse got down well to prevent sneaking into the bottom near corner. Late on, Vics sub Young shot wide but the ball was soon back at the other end as the Vics keeper was down low as Wright set up Craig who moved the ball to create space. However, Newport did score two late goals to rubber stamp their overall dominance. First, a cheeky back-heel by Craig found KELLY who netted with a firm and low shot. After an attempted Vics clearance put the ref on the floor (but only temporarily), Newport added number six when Wright’s cross field ball found KELLY who completed a late brace, a firm strike having cut in from the left. FT 6-1 Teams often struggle against ten men, but Newport played well and could have scored more goals. With the exception of the early red card the game was played in a fine spirit. On this showing the tenants are clearly making themselves well at home!

John Gorman writes TADLEY CALLEVA 1-1 AFC PORTCHESTER ANYONE who strolled in to Barlows Park around nine thirty would have seen the two goals in stoppage time and the deciding penalty shootout without having to bother about the preceding ninety minutes. But that is rather unfair as it was a game in which both sides tried to go forward all the time, both tried to play football, but both on the night lacked a cutting edge in front of goal.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

The first threat came from the home side, a nice move down the right sending Ryan Doherty clear but his chip over the advancing goalkeeper also went over the bar. Tadley goalkeeper Jack Martin was rescued by his defence when he came to the edge of his area for a ball he was never going to reach with Nathan Paxton’s shot blocked, and a difference in styles soon emerged with the visitors using the flanks and getting crosses in whilst the home side relied on quick breaks with the speedy Doherty at the forefront. The referee gave a free kick the “wrong way” and was strong enough to quickly reverse the decision with Owen Fee’s kick being headed over his own bar by a home defender. Martin left his area again, this time to head clear, Portchester’s James Thompson was booked for a challenge that was rather on the late side and Doherty’s speed took him clear again but the cross passed untouched across the six yard box. A Luke Neller free kick suffered the same fate and the halftime whistle came with the scoresheet still blank. HT 0-0 The second half started with an attempt in the opening minute that was the nearest to a goal so far as Owen Fee curled a left foot shot past Martin only to see the ball come back in to play off the inside of the far post and Paxton’s header was cleared off the line as the visitors pressed forward. Tadley quickly got back into the game with a shot from Connor Thorne similarly coming back off the post and keeper Brad Snelling was quickly out of his area to deny Doherty. A fierce Neller free kick was blocked, rather painfully one imagines, by the defensive wall and as the substitutions began the home side had loud appeals for a penalty turned down. Portchester rather surprisingly replaced Fee and the home side matched that by withdrawing Doherty before the referee reminded the experienced Rowan Vine who was running the game – and got a smile and a friendly pat in return. A Tadley player then collected a yellow card for simulation, not the brightest of actions when already having a caution to one’s name- and departed the field so quickly his number could not be seen. And so to the final minute(s). The pacy Terrell Lewis carried the ball in to the Tadley area, two shots were blocked but Rob EVANS forced the ball over the line for what most present thought would be the winner, but Tadley were awarded a free kick on the right touchline and Daryll PHILLIPS got his head to the cross and it was all square again. FT 1-1 Tadley missed their first spot kick and after each side had taken the statutory five kicks the sides were level at three apiece but Tadley scored with penalty number six, Portchester’s went the wrong side of the post and the home side were through to Round Three. An enjoyable game and well controlled by the Officials – just a lack of goals really.

Mike Robins writes BOURNEMOUTH 1-1 DOWNTON TWO early goals at Victoria Park, one each ultimately led to the dreaded shoot out to decide this 2nd Round tie. The opening goal came in five minutes, Karol ROG was brought down inside the penalty area when trying to collect a fine through ball from Levi Ridealgh. He picked himself up and fired home the penalty to give the lead to the Poppies. Both sides were guilty of giving the ball away too often and easily , and chances were few and far between at either end- a teasing deep cross from Poppies’ Tyrone Carkeet was emphatically punched away by Ernie Osei and at the other end Laurence Larbi had a shot that was easily claimed by James Mayo. Downton got back on level terms on 19 minutes when a corner from the left was headed home by Dan SAVAGE. This seemed to lift the Robins’ somewhat and they came close to going ahead on 23 minutes when a Dan Telfer free kick smacked to safety off the upright. Round the half hour mark a Kev Foreman cross was just reached by Osei with Rog ready to pounce and the keeper kept his side in it with a super save to deny Claudio Carvalho with around ten first half minutes left. HT 1-1 The second half saw Downton restricted to long range shots and a decent Telfer free kick just after the resumption curled wide of the mark. Good approach play from Larbi found Andre Sousa in space but he miskicked and the chance was gone.

There were chances at the other end as well, Carvalho came close when his dangerous cross failed to test the keeper and substitute Edgar Zanin tested the keeper from around the edge of the penalty area. With Poppies reduced to ten with Howard Nhemachena sin binned, Downton failed to capitalise on the situation, in fact it was the hosts who came closest during that ten minute spell with Zanin again posing the main threat and he had a great chance in the dying minutes to grab a winner but it wasn’t to be, so the game went to penalties. FT 1-1 Downton went first and scored, Poppies’ Mayo then saved the second Downton penalty the only one saved as all were converted including one from the hosts’ keeper, the sixth- before it ended with a 5-4 win for Bournemouth.

Roger Allen writes TOTTON & ELING 4-1 SOLENT UNIVERSITY FC NEITHER side had made particularly good starts to the season although Totton & Eling did hit seven against Pewsey Vale on Saturday to notch their first Division 1 win of the season. Solent had lost all of their six matches going into this first round tie in the Wessex League Cup. Solent had a great opportunity to take the lead as Millers keeper Eyres failed to control the ball with his feet and fouled Demunga as he looked to capitalise on the slip, penalty given. Up stepped Ethan Taylor for Solent who dragged the spot-kick wide. Calloway set up Matthews for Totton and he forced Solent keeper Londors to save and then Macauley laid the ball to Callaway who scuffed his chance and Londors was able to save with ease. Solent took a 28th minute lead with a good move as Ethan TAYLOR collected a pass from Beasley and made a purposeful run forward and went on to net with a fine finish from around 22-yards. The lead lasted less than four minutes though as Totton were awarded a free-kick and GAIN took it from fully 35-yards out and he netted direct with the ball going into the far corner. Solent looked to hit back with Mitchell’s shot being blocked and Penny picked up the scraps but the ball went over. Shouts of agony could be heard when Millers defender Beech fell awkwardly in midfield and it was a suspected broken ankle. The player was tended to and was eventually taken off on a stretcher following an eleven-minute delay to proceedings. The ball bobbled around in the Totton six-yard box from an Ethan Taylor corner but the keeper eventually gathered whilst Penny weaved his way into the box but Eyres made the save. A move involving Gain and Spencer produced a chance for Callaway, the shot being saved by Londors. HT 1-1 The Millers hit Solent with three goals in a nine- minute spell. Gain tried another free-kick from closer in and Londors got down to parry but CALLAWAY was on hand to fire home. CALLAWAY completed a swift brace, getting on the end of a ball played across the box and hit it first time. The Millers fourth goal came from a Solent attack as Matthews played a good ball that put BURNS in the clear and he fired low past the keeper. Both sides made changes but the three-goal Millers lead seldom looked under threat from there although late opportunities saw Penny fire off target whilst Burns drove wide for the Millers. Mahon, probably Solent’s best player in a poor performance generally, shot just over but the final whistle came soon after, and credit to Totton on the night. FT 4-1 This was quite a scalp for the Millers side and they now go on to face a home tie with fellow Division 1 side Andover New Street in Round 2. Hopefully, Tyler Beech will soon recover and lace up his boots again soon.

Roger Allen writes HAMBLE CLUB 4-1 TOTTON & ELING On paper this should have been one sided and although the scoreline ultimately reflected this, the Millers, for the second time in a week, gave a good account of themselves against Premier opposition. In fact they started the quicker having much of the early play but Hamble gained the lead after 21 minutes with an excellent goal. It came from a Hamble corner which was cleared to the halfway line. Jordan RAGGUETTE was doing his defensive duties but he was first to the ball winning a tackle and advanced to Sunday, 01 September 2019 19/20 Edition #09 Page 7 of 19

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS around 35 yards from goal where he let fly with his left foot. The ball sailed into the net giving Oliver Eyles in the Millers' goal no chance. This was the trigger that Hamble needed to gain control and from then until half time they had a succession of chances that they were unable to convert. HT 1-0 Totton again started the second half well but they soon conceded a second goal. Hamble were the bigger side physically in all compartments of the team and they made that pay from set pieces in the second half. On 52 minutes Eyles was forced into a good save from Ryan Wilkins at a corner but Nathan LYNCH reacted quickly to volley the ball home from 6 yards. The third goal came on 74 minutes and again it was from a corner that wasn't cleared. This time the ball broke to LYNCH again who was able to swivel, take a touch and drive the ball home from a narrow angle. Finally, with 4 minutes to go WILKINS got his reward for a strong second half performance when he was released to run onto a through ball and finish well past Eyles. Hamble must now turn their thoughts to another Friday night game in the League against Baffins Milton Rovers whilst, for the Millers, it’s also back to League business with a visit to Downton. FT 4-1

MIDWEEK ROUNDUP

After last week’s midweek football was dominated by the , this week it was the turn of the Sydenhams Wessex League Cup to fill the schedule with six first round ties and nine more in the second round. In the first round AFC Stoneham continued their excellent start to the season with an 8-0 defeat of First Division Alton courtesy of a hat trick from Marcel Laptas with the other goals shared between five different players. Laverstock & Ford gave Premier Division highfliers Alresford a fright at Arlebury before going down by the odd goal in five with Craig McAllister claimi
