  • Paper for Religion, Politics and Culture Section European Academy of Religion, University of Bologna, Italy March 2019
Paper for Religion, Politics and Culture Section European Academy of Religion, University of Bologna, Italy March 2019 In Trump We Trust? A Theologian Reflects on Challenges Facing the Contemporary Church The Very Revd Professor Martyn Percy, Dean of Christ Church, Oxford The inauguration of Donald Trump as the 45th President of the USA took place exactly one year ago on Friday, January 20, 2017. Many watched open- mouthed as Trump, in his maiden speech, repeatedly invoked the new Presidential agenda: “America First!”. The mantra-like phrase was a deliberate nod to the twitter-handle he had used in campaigning - #MAGA - “Make America Great Again”. This, we quickly learnt, would be done by burning any of the remaining bridges left. Adding to “Build the Wall”, there would a bonfire of trade deals, trashing climate concordats on global warming, continuing use of socially divisive rhetoric, fickle political governance, and reckless temperament in foreign policy. The only surprising feature of Trump’s first year in office is that it’s been entirely predictable. So when I mention to colleagues that I have been researching Trump’s religious faith, reactions vary from mild scoffing (“I thought he was his own religion?") to bafflement and surprise. But Trump has a faith. And if you want to know how the next few years of his presidency will pan out, understanding Trump’s religion is an important key. Indeed, possibly the major one. Let us start with the inauguration. Not many people will have heard of Pastor Paula White. But she was one of the main nominated clergy to pray for Trump at his inauguration.

  • How the United States Has Executed Eugenic Legislation to Model the Ideal American One Hundred Years Ago and Today
NEW UNIVERSITY OF LISBON European Master’s Degree in Human Rights and Democratisation A.Y. 2017/2018 “The American Dream”: How the United States has Executed Eugenic Legislation to Model the Ideal American One Hundred Years Ago and Today Author: Victoria Grandsoult Supervisor: Helena Pereira de Melo Acknowledgements I would like to express my gratitude to my supervisor, Professor Helena Pereira de Melo, for her guidance and inspiration; the staff within the Law Faculty at New University of Lisbon and the European Inter-University Centre, without their collaboration and management this unique and dynamic Human Rights Master would not be possible; and to my family, for their endless support and encouragement. Lisbon, July 2018 2 Abstract The scientific movement of intervening on human reproduction to manipulate breeding and produce genetically superior offspring, called eugenics, became nationwide public policy in early twentieth century United States. The government and social elite sought to cleanse the country of ‘defective’ heredity and preserve the American race by promoting breeding for families who fulfilled the Anglo-Saxon ideal and suppressing procreation for those who did not. A model of genetic advancement intensified by Adolf Hitler and his Third Reich, eugenics in America provided a scientific foundation for government intervention on populations antithetical to the American identity. One hundred years later, eugenic ideals for race preservation have resurfaced with the presidential election of Donald Trump. His call to “make America great again” has facilitated the enactment of policy initiatives that target immigrants, minorities, and the poor to eliminate populations outside the model of a ‘true’ American.

    # 79 VALDAI PAPERS December 2017 www.valdaiclub.com ALT-RIGHT: A RISE OF RADICAL ALTERNATIVE RIGHTIST MOVEMENTS IN THE TRUMPIST FRAMEWORK Daniel Grigoryev, Jeffrey Sommers About the Authors Daniel Grigoryev Expert of the Institute of Globalization and Social Movements (IGSO), Moscow Jeffrey Sommers Associate Professor of the Institute of World Affairs, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee The views and opinions expressed in this Paper are those of the authors and do not represent the views of the Valdai Discussion Club, unless explicitly stated otherwise. ALT-RIGHT: A RISE OF RADICAL ALTERNATIVE RIGHTIST MOVEMENTS IN THE TRUMPIST FRAMEWORK Why Bother: a Historic Introduction The world is changing — that simple fact applies to all kinds of structures, from global ecology to municipal city management. However, it is the political changes which managed to attract the most attention during the last electoral cycle in the US. In order to understand what exactly went so different from the previous iterations, we need a small historical introduction. It should not come as a surprise that the society we live in is heavily infl uenced by events of major importance (taking place somewhere in the past). Thinking about the last event of the same kind one may recall the stagfl ation crisis that haunted a number of Western and European countries since the end of the 1970s. Still it is widely debatable what served at its primal cause. Those on the Right tend to blame the ‘excessive government regulation’, including welfare state projects and increasing government spending (as a share of GDP). Supporters of the Left usually speak about inherent instabilities of the capitalist economies and the lack of desire to expand regulations even further.

Trump is in this election compared to the GOP establishment, and In Trump We Trust: How He Outsmarted the Politicians his policies really are. No, no—we need a casserole or side dish! The press, the media, the pundits are all enemies of a functioning democracy who willfully, knowingly work to undermine that essential cornerstone of democracy, an informed electorate. Ann Coulter. Main thing I like about this book, Ann provides 2 sides to most issues. I have nothing to add, they've said it all. Also by Ann Coulter. The Second Civil War. This is how great powers die, which is exactly what the left wants. Her Best So Far Great research as usual and very effective use of humor. From the Hardcover edition. He asked her who had the best chance of winning the election. You know the saying: There's no time like the present Nov 15, Magne Salveson rated it it was amazing. She shows how political consultants concerned most about collecting ad revenue trained most politicians to recite the same decades-old "safe" lines and avoid offending the same major donors again and again, offering little new -- until Trump changed the conversation and dominated the national agenda. Donald Trump didn't have any of that, and the voters went with him. Peter Bergen.

Humphrey. THE GATHERING STORM: THE ROLE OF WHITE NATIONALISM IN U.S. POLITICS GENIE A. DONLEY ABSTRACT White nationalism has played a critical role in shaping United States politics for over 150 years. Since the Reconstruction era, whites have fought to maintain their power and superiority over minorities. They influenced U.S. politics by attempting, and in some cases succeeding, to prevent minorities from voting. Moreover, politicians began to help them. This became most evident in the 2016 U.S. presidential election when Republican Donald J. Trump appealed to racist white voters, gained their support, and won the election. Those voters, who united as the Alt-Right, supported Trump because he appealed to them by playing on their fear of becoming a minority in their country. This thesis traces white nationalism back to Reconstruction. It analyzes the memberships of separate groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, Neo-Confederates, and Citizens’ Councils to show how and why those various groups united as the Alt-Right to support Trump in the 2016 election.

TRUMP, TRUST, AND THE FUTURE OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL ORDER STEPHEN M. GRIFFIN Sometimes constitutions fail. The unprecedented election of Donald Trump, a populist insurgent1 who lacks the prior political experience or mil- itary service of all presidents before him, is such a sharp break in American historical experience that it raises questions as to whether something is deeply amiss with the constitutional order.2 Constitutional failure is not uncommon.3 A path-breaking global study of national constitutions shows that on average, they last only nineteen years.4 The U.S. Constitution is an uncommon outlier and, as such, is accounted by many a long-running success story.5 But could a bell be tolling for American constitutionalism? In this Essay, I assess the meaning of Trump’s shocking rise for the fu- ture of our constitutional order.6 The shock, of course, was not the election of a Republican president. There have been many Republican presidents since Lincoln, each making their own distinctive contribution to the Ameri- can tradition.
