GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY, 1990 M.A. UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN- MILWAUKEE, 1995 “OUR ART ITSELF WAS OUR ACTIVISM”: ATLANTA’S NEIGHBORHOOD ARTS CENTER, 1975-1990 Committee Chair: Richard Allen Morton. Ph.D. Dissertation dated May 2012 This cultural history study examined Atlanta’s Neighborhood Arts Center (NAC), which existed from 1975 to 1990, as an example of black cultural politics in the South. As a Black Arts Movement (BAM) institution, this regional expression has been missing from academic discussions of the period. The study investigated the multidisciplinary programming that was created to fulfill its motto of “Art for People’s Sake.” The five themes developed from the program research included: 1) the NAC represented the juxtaposition between the individual and the community, local and national; 2) the NAC reached out and extended the arts to the masses, rather than just focusing on the black middle class and white supporters; 3) the NAC was distinctive in space and location; 4) the NAC seemed to provide more opportunities for women artists than traditional BAM organizations; and 5) the NAC had a specific mission to elevate the social and political consciousness of black people. In addition to placing the Neighborhood Arts Center among the regional branches of the BAM family tree, using the programmatic findings, this research analyzed three themes found to be present in the black cultural politics of Atlanta which made for the center’s unique grassroots contributions to the movement. The themes centered on a history of politics, racial issues, and class dynamics. -

Blueprint Midtown 3. ACTION PLAN Introduction This document identifies Midtown’s goals, implementation strategies and specific action items that will ensure a rich diversity of land uses, vibrant street-level activity, quality building design, multimodal transportation accessibility and mobility, and engaging public spaces. Blueprint Midtown 3.0 is the most recent evolution of Midtown Alliance’s community driven plan that builds on Midtown’s fundamental strengths and makes strategic improvements to move the District from great to exceptional. It identifies both high priority projects that will be advanced in the next 10 years, as well as longer-term projects and initiatives that may take decades to achieve but require exploration now. Since 1997, policies laid out in Blueprint Midtown have guided public and private investment to create a clean, safe, and vibrant urban environment. The original plan established a community vision for Midtown that largely remains the same: a livable, walkable district in the heart of Atlanta; a place where people, business and culture converge to create a live-work-play community with a distinctive personality and a premium quality of life. Blueprint Midtown 3.0 builds on recent successes, incorporates previously completed studies and corridor plans, draws inspiration from other places and refines site-specific recommendations to reflect the changes that have occurred in the community since the original unveiling of Blueprint Midtown. Extensive community input conducted in 2016 involving more than 6,000 Midtown employers, property owners, residents, workers, visitors, public-sector partners, and subject-matter experts validates the Blueprint Midtown vision for an authentic urban experience. The Action Plan lives with a family of Blueprint Midtown 3.0 documents which also includes: Overview: Moving Forward with Blueprint Midtown 3.0, Midtown Character Areas Concept Plans (coming soon), Appendices: Project Plans and 5-Year Work Plan (coming soon). -

RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION AT GEORGIA AQUARIUM, INC. Georgia Aquarium is committed to the research and conservation of aquatic animals around the world. As a leader in marine research, Georgia Aquarium contributes to the advancement of knowledge of our blue planet by studying animals here at the Aquarium and in their natural environments. Since opening, members of the Aquarium’s research team have participated in nearly 100 funded research projects and authored more than 130 peer-reviewed publications and conference appearances. Our researchers collaborate with scientists around the world to understand our aquatic world so that we may conserve it for generations to come. Conservation Field Station The Georgia Aquarium Conservation Field Station (GACFS) in Marineland, Fla., is dedicated to the research and rescue of dolphins and whales in northeast Florida. The GACFS team responds to marine mammal strandings and distress calls, and researchers contribute to a recurring photo identification survey that documents the resident bottlenose dolphin population in northern Florida. The GACFS is also committed to community outreach, with school outreach courses, camps and stranding awareness programs to educate the public. ONGOING AND MILESTONE RESEARCH & CONSERVATION EFFORTS Whale Sharks Georgia Aquarium is a worldwide leader in whale shark research and conservation. We’ve sent teams to learn more about these gentle giants off the coast of Mexico, Taiwan, the Galapagos Islands and Saint Helena, an island in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean. In 2009, our joint studies with the Project Domino consortium led to the Mexican government’s creation of the Whale Shark Biosphere Reserve, a protected area for this vulnerable species in Yucatan, Mexico. -

The Stitch – Just in Time The Atlanta Downtown Improvement District (ADID) is the CID run by Central Atlanta Progress, a public-private civic organization that has been in existence since 1941. A.J. Robinson is the president of CAP and the ADID. CHIEF ADVANCEMENT OFFICER THE ATLANTA OPERA Atlanta, Georgia The Atlanta Opera The Aspen Leadership Group is proud to partner with The Atlanta Opera in the search for a Chief Advancement Officer. The Chief Advancement Officer (CAO) will be responsible for all revenue generated for The Atlanta Opera; earned and contributed. The CAO will be directly responsible for successfully creating, leading, and implementing an integrated resource development strategy and developing new relationships, while maintaining existing relationships to build the organization's visibility, impact, and financial resources. This individual will be responsible for raising private sector funds to support The Atlanta Opera’s initiatives and leading the development and implementation of organization-wide strategies to increase its fundraising capacity. The CAO will support the General & Artistic Director and the Board of Directors in cultivating and soliciting major gifts and grants from individuals, corporations, foundations, government institutions, and others. The CAO will lead a team of professionals responsible for fundraising, volunteer cultivation, corporate philanthropic support, events, communications, public relations, marketing, and social media functions for the organization. The CAO will also provide leadership and support for its Comprehensive Campaign. The Chief Advancement Officer is a member of the Senior Management Team and works together with the General & Artistic Director, Managing Director, the Directors of Finance, Marketing, Production, and Artistic Departments to provide strategic leadership and operational management of The Atlanta Opera as a whole.
