CHAN Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong S.A.R., China Abstract: Icons, which take the form of images, artifacts, landmarks, or fictional figures, represent mounds of meaning stuck in the collective unconsciousness of different communities. Icons are shortcuts to values, identity or feelings that their users collectively share and treasure. Through the concrete identification and analysis of icons of post-war Hong Kong, this paper attempts to highlight not only Hong Kong people’s changing collective needs and mental or material hunger, but also their continuous search for identity. Introduction: Telling Hong Kong’s Story through Icons It seems easy to tell the story of post-war Hong Kong. If merely delineating the sky-high synopsis of the city, the ups and downs, high highs and low lows are at once evidently remarkable: a collective struggle for survival in the post-war years, tremendous social instability in the 1960s, industrial take-off in the 1970s, a growth in economic confidence and cultural arrogance in the 1980s and a rich cultural upheaval in search of locality before the handover. The early 21st century might as well sum up the development of Hong Kong, whose history is long yet surprisingly short- propelled by capitalism, gnawing away at globalization and living off its elastic schizophrenia. -

This paper reviews the status of Cantonese in Hong Kong under this policy with respect to the levels of government, education and curriculum, considers the consequences of neglecting Cantonese in the school curriculum, and discusses the importance of large-scale surveys for language policymaking. It always results in raising the status of the regional vernacular, but the lan- guage of the ex-colonist still maintains a very strong influence on certain domains. Taking Singapore as an example, English became the dominant language in the work- place and families, and the local dialects were suppressed. It led to the degrading of both English and Chinese proficiency levels according to scholars’ evaluation (Goh 2009a, b). -

Digital Culture in Hong Kong Canadian Communities: Literary Analysis of Yi Shu’s Fiction Jessica Tsui-yan Li York University Hong Kong Canadian Communities have particularly expanded between the 1980s 191 and the mid-1990s, in part owing to a new wave of Hong Kong immigration to Canada in recent years. This large-scale migration is mainly due to Hong Kong’s dynamic geopolitical and economic relationships with Mainland China and Canada as a result of its transformation from a British colony (1842-1997) to a postcolonial city. Hong Kong Canadian migration and communities offer important contribu- tions to the sociohistorical, political, and economic heterogeneity of multicultural Canadian communities. As a trading centre on Mainland China’s south coast, Hong Kong was an important stop on the travels of Chinese migrants to Canada from the late eighteenth century to the early twentieth century. With the hardworking ethics of its population and its role as a window to the rest of the world for Mainland China, Hong Kong gradually developed from a fishing port into an industrial city and then became an international financial centre, making the most of an economic uplift that began in the 1970s. With the advance of global capitalism, Hong Kong has progressively established its distinctive judicial, financial, medical, educational, transportation, and social welfare systems, and gradually produced a local culture and a sense of identity. Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) play a significant role in shaping contemporary diasporic communities, such as those of Hong Kong Canadians. Hong Kong Literature as Sinophone Literature 華語語系香港文學初論 史書美 SHIH Shu-mei 加州大學洛杉磯分校亞洲語言文化系、 亞美研究系及比較文學系 Department of Comparative Literature, Asian Languages and Cultures, and Asian American Studies, University of California, Los Angeles A denotative meaning of the term “Sinophone,” as used by Sau-ling Wong in her work on Sinophone Chinese American literature to designate Chinese American literature written in Sinitic languages, is a productive way to start the investigation of the notion in terms of its connotative meanings.1 2 Connotation, by dictionary definition, is the practice that implies other characteristics and meanings beyond the term’s denotative meaning; ideas and feelings invoked in excess of the literal meaning; and, as a philosophical practice, the practice of identifying certain determining principles underlying the implied and invoked meanings, characteristics, ideas, and feelings. This short essay is a preliminary exploration of the connotative meanings of the category that I call Sinophone Hong Kong literature vis-a-vis the emergent field of Sinophone'studies as the study of Sinitic-language cultures, communities, and histories on the margins of China and Chineseness. -

International Relations and Diplomacy, ISSN 2328-2134 October 2014, Vol. 2, No. 10, 665-679 D DAVID PUBLISHING Hong Kong Civic Education Policy From 1984 to 2014: An Historical Comparative Analysis Hung Chung Fun Steven Hong Kong Institute of Education, Hong Kong, China This paper aims to the analysis of civic education policy of the two governments of Hong Kong, the British Colony before 1997 and the Chinese Special Administrative Region after 1997. Hong Kong people own questionable identities, neither British citizens nor Chinese subjects. Basically, the decolonization showed that the policy of domestication was implemented during the transition period of Hong Kong where the government patronized and empowered the Hong Kong people through enhancing human rights and developing political democratization. After handing over of sovereignty, the education policy made the contents of civic education more patriotic, cultural hegemonic and national ideological. The intentions were quite obviously presented in policy documents and responded in the historical contexts. The historical comparison intends to get the expandable interpretation of the scenario of education policy in this period of Hong Kong. Keywords: de-colonization, civic education, historical comparison Introduction: The Statement of the Problem If historical factors help to analyze policy proposal, initiation and implementation of civic education in Hong Kong, comparison can help to analysis the changes before and after the handover of sovereignty from Britain to China. From 1984 to 2014, these 30 years include the transition period of the British decolonization and the governing under “one country two systems” formula by the People’s Republic of China. That is the Chinese post-colonial or, more seriously, the new stage of re-colonization. -

LCQ11: Promotion of Cantonese Opera development *********************************************** Following is a question by the Hon Priscilla Leung and a written reply by the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, in the Legislative Council today (January 7): Question: With the joint effort of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, the Chinese Ministry of Culture, in September last year, applied to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation for the inscription of Cantonese opera onto the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity ("the inscription"). Furthermore, as an agreement on tenancy renewal has yet to be reached between the tenant and landlord of the Sunbeam Theatre in North Point, this large-scale performance venue for Cantonese opera may soon disappear. In this connection, will the Government inform this Council: (a) of the current policies to support the work of inscription by the Chinese Ministry of Culture, and to facilitate the sustainable development of Cantonese opera; (b) whether it will consider proposing options to the landlord and tenant concerned in respect of tenancy renewal for the Sunbeam Theatre, so as to preserve this performance venue for Cantonese opera with historic value; if not, of the reasons for that; (c) whether it will consider converting the Yau Ma Tei Fruit Market into a world-class large-scale Cantonese opera theatre, as well as converting the Yau Ma Tei Theatre into an academy of Cantonese opera, so as to nurture professionals and talents in the field; if not, of the reasons for that; and (d) given that many amateur artists and audience of Cantonese opera gather around Temple Street and the "Banyan Tree" in Yau Ma Tei, whether the Government will study the adoption of a targeted approach to promote and develop the culture of Cantonese opera in the area; if not, of the reasons for that? Reply: President, (a) Cantonese Opera is an emblem of Hong Kong's local culture and its preservation and development are very important. -

Beyond Cantonese: Articulation, Narrative and Memory in Contemporary Sinophone Hong Kong, Singaporean and Malaysian Literature by Li Ling Ngan A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of East Asian Studies University of Alberta © Li Ling Ngan, 2019 Abstract This thesis examines Cantonese in Sinophone literature, and the time- and place- specific memories of Cantonese speaking communities in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia after the year 2000. Focusing on the literary works by Wong Bik-wan (1961-), Yeng Pway Ngon (1947-) and Li Zishu (1971-), this research demonstrates how these three writers use Cantonese as a conduit to evoke specific memories in order to reflect their current identity. Cantonese narratives generate uniquely Sinophone critique in and of their respective places. This thesis begins by examining Cantonese literature through the methodological frameworks of Sinophone studies and memory studies. Chapter One focuses on Hong Kong writer Wong Bik-wan’s work Children of Darkness and analyzes how vulgar Cantonese connects with involuntary autobiographical memory and the relocation of the lost self. Chapter Two looks at Opera Costume by Singaporean writer Yeng Pway Ngon and how losing connection with one’s mother tongue can lose one’s connection with their familial memories. Chapter Three analyzes Malaysian writer Li Zishu’s short story Snapshots of Chow Fu and how quotidian Cantonese simultaneously engenders crisis of memory and the rejection of the duty to remember. These works demonstrate how Cantonese, memory, and identity, are transnationally linked in space and time. This thesis concludes with thinking about the future direction of Cantonese cultural production. -
