ABSTRACT This thesis investigates the Cultural Studies paradigm 'hybridity' through an analysis or Hong Kong culture. In Cultural Studies, 'hybridity' is usually applied to cultures that have been innucnccd by another culture, resulting in a loss of identity, leading to a cultural mixture. As a former Colony comprising predominantly ofa southern Chinese popu,Jtion, Hong Kong has been influenced by British culture. However, the question is whether Hong Kong culture has been 'hybridises', or, the Hong Kong people, in mastering two cultures, have become bicultural, and use their biculturaiism bilaterally, as particular situations require. The study also researches the condition of Hong Kong culture when exported overseas through migration, and remigrntion, especially among Chinese. Other areas researched are Hong Kong culture's relationship to identity and ethnicity through film and language. The primary research data is sou1ced from surveys and interviews with Hong Kong Chinese people in Australia and Hong Kong. Secondary sources include written media, computer-generated media, film, and television. The research uses a multiple design format of field: historical; content analysis; textual analysis; forensic, and anecdotal material. The findings will show that :~ong Kong culture is dominated by Chinese cultures rather than Western culture and as such may not be regarded as a 'hybrid' culture, but as a conglomerate or independently used cultures. My research findings challenge the validity oft he Cultural Studies use ofhybridity in association with colonialism, and opens the way for other cultures designated as 'hybrid' to be re­ examined within a similar research framework to this study. Signature Date N~vz:!:!. 2_002- ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS My decision to research Hong Kong culture is not completely without prior experience or knowledge. ! lived in Hong Kong for twenty yearn from 1968 to 1988, during which time I saw many changes, both in Hong Kong's environment, and among the Hong Kong people in dealing with these changes. One phenomenon that soon came to my notice was how Hong Kong people could seamlessly switch from operating in one culture to successfully operating in another. In multi-racial environments such ns shops and social gathering points like clubs, the interaction between non-Caucasian Hong Kong people with their own culture, and with the foreign Western culture flowed back and forth without discernible major problems. This situation was at the heart of the successful change of I-long Kong from a colonial outpost to an internationally recognised and unique cultural and business centre. The ease ofcuhural exchange was especially noticeable amongst Hong Kong's Chinese inhabitants, who made up the vast majority of the population and used the predominant non-English spoken language of the Colony, Cantonese. After completing a Masters Degree, I had the desire to continue my university studies. I consulted my previous Masters Degree research supervisor Associate Professor llrian Shoesmith, who advised me that! should consider using my experience in Hong Kong to formulate a research project. After consideration of Professor Shoesmith's advice, I put before him the concept of researching Hong Kong culture and its relationship with colonialism. From this idea evolved researching Hong Kong Chinese culture and its relationship to the concept of cultural hybridity in view of Hong Kong's long exposure to innuences exerted by British colonial rule, My research, has for me, been a rewarding experience, bnt this could not have been achieved without the invaluable help of the people who provided various forms of assistance to me, and as such I would like to express my thanks to the following people. Firstly I would like lo thank the people who gave me access to my primary research data by answering my questionnaires. These people deserve special thanks, as the, ~ponse rate for the number of questionnaires distributed was not up to my expectations. Introduction: Telling Hong Kong’s Story through Icons It seems easy to tell the story of post-war Hong Kong. If merely delineating the sky-high synopsis of the city, the ups and downs, high highs and low lows are at once evidently remarkable: a collective struggle for survival in the post-war years, tremendous social instability in the 1960s, industrial take-off in the 1970s, a growth in economic confidence and cultural arrogance in the 1980s and a rich cultural upheaval in search of locality before the handover. The early 21st century might as well sum up the development of Hong Kong, whose history is long yet surprisingly short- propelled by capitalism, gnawing away at globalization and living off its elastic schizophrenia.

My analysis differs from past studies' suggestions that the strike was a libertarian eruption of mass protest against British imperialism and the Hongkong Government, which, according to these studies, exploited and oppressed Chinese in Guangdong and Hongkong. I argue that a political party, the CCP, led, organised, and nurtured the strike. It centralised political power in its hands and tried to impose its revolutionary visions on those under its control. First, I describe how foreign trade enriched many people outside the state. I go on to describe how Chinese-run institutions governed Hongkong's increasingly settled non-elite Chinese population. I reject ideas that Hongkong's mixed-class unions exploited workers and suggest that revolutionaries failed to transform Hongkong society either before or during the strike. My thesis shows that the strike bureaucracy was an authoritarian power structure; the strike's unprecedented political demands reflected the CCP's revolutionary political platform, which was sometimes incompatible with the interests of Hongkong's unions. I suggestthat the revolutionary elite's goals were not identical to those of the unions it claimed to represent: Hongkong unions preserved their autonomy in the face of revolutionaries' attempts to control Hongkong workers.

It always results in raising the status of the regional vernacular, but the lan- guage of the ex-colonist still maintains a very strong influence on certain domains. Taking Singapore as an example, English became the dominant language in the work- place and families, and the local dialects were suppressed. It led to the degrading of both English and Chinese proficiency levels according to scholars’ evaluation (Goh 2009a, b).

The map illustrates the boundaries set up by the Territorial Convention of 1860 and the New Convention of 1898. The map was issued shortly after the signing of the New Convention on June 9, 1898. Under the convention the territories north of what is now Boundary Street and south of the Sham Chun River, and the surrounding islands, later known as the "New Territories" were leased to the United Kingdom for 99 years rent-free, expiring on 30 June 1997, and became part of the crown colony of Hong Kong. The Kowloon Walled City was excepted and remained under the control of Qing China. The territories which were leased to the United Kingdom were originally governed by Xin'an County, Guangdong province. Claude MacDonald, the British representative during the convention, picked a 99- year lease because he thought it was "as good as forever". Britain did not think they would ever have to give the territories back. The 99-year lease was a convenient agreement. Rarity We were unable to find an institutional examples of the map. A ship registered at the Port of Hong Kong was, therefore, a British ship. Hong Kong reverted to Chinese sovereignty on 1 July 1997 and became a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China. Section VIII of Annex I to the Sino- British Joint Declaration which relates to the transfer of sovereignty states that: “The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region shall maintain Hong Kong’s previous systems of shipping management and shipping regulation, including the system for regulating conditions of seamen. The specific functions and responsibilities of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government in the field of shipping shall be defined by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government on its own. Private shipping businesses and shipping-related businesses and private container terminals in Hong Kong may continue to operate freely. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region shall be authorised by the Central People’s Government to continue to maintain a shipping register and issue related certificates under its own legislation in the name of ‘Hong Kong, China’.” The Hong Kong Government appointed a Steering Committee in 1987 to advise the Government on the establishment of an independent shipping registry. The result was enacted as the Merchant Shipping (Registration) Ordinance (Cap 415) (the “Ordinance”), which came into effect on 3 December 1990.

    Digital Culture in Hong Kong Canadian Communities: Literary Analysis of Yi Shu’s Fiction Jessica Tsui-yan Li York University Hong Kong Canadian Communities have particularly expanded between the 1980s 191 and the mid-1990s, in part owing to a new wave of Hong Kong immigration to Canada in recent years. This large-scale migration is mainly due to Hong Kong’s dynamic geopolitical and economic relationships with Mainland China and Canada as a result of its transformation from a British colony (1842-1997) to a postcolonial city. Hong Kong Canadian migration and communities offer important contribu- tions to the sociohistorical, political, and economic heterogeneity of multicultural Canadian communities. As a trading centre on Mainland China’s south coast, Hong Kong was an important stop on the travels of Chinese migrants to Canada from the late eighteenth century to the early twentieth century. With the hardworking ethics of its population and its role as a window to the rest of the world for Mainland China, Hong Kong gradually developed from a fishing port into an industrial city and then became an international financial centre, making the most of an economic uplift that began in the 1970s. With the advance of global capitalism, Hong Kong has progressively established its distinctive judicial, financial, medical, educational, transportation, and social welfare systems, and gradually produced a local culture and a sense of identity. Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) play a significant role in shaping contemporary diasporic communities, such as those of Hong Kong Canadians.
