The Flowers of War (2012), based on the homonymous novel by Geling Yan, and City of Life and Death (2009) are recent Chinese films that deal with the so- called ‘Nanking Massacre’ or ‘the Rape of Nanking’. The events which inspired these stories in the context of the second Sino-Japanese War will be analysed through the study and comparison of both films, together with the reasons which led the directors to fictionalise a series of events so many years after they occurred in 1937. This analysis will be carried out based on the testimonies of the foreigners who eyewitnessed the events at the time, and who left written testimony of the facts, and a comparison shall be made between the fictional and factual events. Keywords: Nanking Massacre, the Rape of Nanking, City of Life and Death, The Flowers of War, Geling Yan, Iris Chang, II Sino-Japanese War INTRODUCTION The publication of The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II (1997) by Iris Chang brought the ”Nanking Massacre” to global attention. Several other books and films, such as City of Life and Death (2009) and The Flowers of War (2011), based on the homonymous novel by Geling Yan, appeared. Thus, Iris Chang achieved her desire to inspire other authors and historians to investigate the stories of the Nanking survivors (McLaughlin, 2004 n/p). Iris Chang, born in New Jersey, the daughter of two university professors who had emigrated from Taiwan. Accompanied by Duan Yueping, the assistant curator of the Memorial Hall of the Nanking Massacre, Chang visited Nanking to research the stories of the survivors of the massacre. Chang killed herself on November 9, 2004 when suffering from a severe depression in her home at St. Jose, California. Among the photographic records of this tragedy are the diaries of John Rabe and Minnie Vautrin, along with multiple letters to family or friends, the Japanese Embassy, and reports and articles from the 53 M. Minnie Vautrin, a direct witness and survivor of the massacre and head of Gingling College contributed to save thousands of lives and thousands of Chinese women and girls from systematic rape by Japanese soldiers. “Exhausted and haunted by the images of those she could not save,” Vautrin killed herself in 1941 (McLaughlin, 2004n/p). Most of these records were compiled by Zhang Kaiyuan in his edition Eyewitnesses to Massacre: American Missionaries Bear Witness to Japanese Atrocities in Nanjing, which also includes some testimonies to the International Military Tribunal for the Far East – also known as the Tokyo Trials – which took place on April, 1946. The events also reached the world at the time of the tragedy through the book by H. J. Timperley, What War Means, published with the title The Japanese Terror in China

The Nanjing Massacre A few weeks after the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-45) broke out near Beijing on July 7, 1937, hostilities spread down south to the Shanghai area. The August 9 Hongqiao Airfield Incident, in which two Japanese marines and one Chinese soldier were killed, built up tensions between the Chinese and Japanese. Alleging that Chinese snipers fired at Japanese patrols, the Japanese launched small-scaled attacks on Chinese positions on August 13 morning. Sporadic skirmishes then escalated to battles as both sides rushed in more reinforcements. The following days witnessed four Chinese divisions and several thousand Japanese marines engaged in street fighting in Shanghai.

    Using Primary Sources To Clarify the Nanking Incident Tomisawa Shigenobu Former Chairman, Study Group for the Examination of the Nanking Incident Auditor, Committee for the Examination of the Facts about Nanking Preface The Second Sino-Japanese War began in 1937. In December of that year, the Japanese were victorious in the Battle of Nanking. The allegation that, when occupying Nanking, Japanese military personnel set upon the civilian residents of the city, raping and killing them, was later leveled against Japan. The accusers further alleged that the Japanese murdered 200,000-300,000 persons, including prisoners of war, in what is commonly known in Japan as the “Nanking Incident,” and in the West as the “Nanking massacre” and the “Rape of Nanking.” It is very likely that their position derives from unguarded acceptance of a book entitled What War Means1 and from judgments handed down at the Tokyo Trials.2 What War Means was published by the Chinese Nationalist government. The book was the product of an intense propaganda campaign launched after the Chinese suffered devastating military defeats and retreated first from Shanghai, and then Nanking as well. The Kuomintang (Nationalist Party) government’s Central Propaganda Department hired H. J.     Minnie Vautrin 1886-1941 USA Minnie Vautrin was born in Secor, Illinois on September 27, 1886. She graduated from the Department of Education at University of Illinois with high honours in 1912. She was commissioned by the United Christ Missionary Society as a missionary to China, and moved to Nanking in 1912. She became chair of the education department at Ginling College when it was founded in 1916, the first university granting bachelor’s degrees to female students in China. Vautrin devoted her adult life to the education of Chinese women at Ginling College in Nanking and to helping the poor. When most of the faculty left Nanjing in December 1937, afraid of the invading Japanese forces, Vautrin became acting Dean of Ginling and took charge of the campus for the duration of the Japanese siege and the massacre. There were many teachers, students and thousands of people who could not leave, and she voluntarily stayed for four and a half months. During the massacre, Vautrin turned the College into a sanctuary for 10,000 women and worked tirelessly to help establish the Nanking Safety Zone. Her diary, like that of the International Committee for the Nanking Safety Zone Chair John Rabe’s, is a primary source of information on the Japanese atrocities in Nanking. She kept a 526-page diary covering the period from 1937 to 1941. About one-fourth of her diary documents the period of the Nanking Massacre from December 1937 to March 1938. Weary and stressed from the emotional strain of the massacre, she had a nervous breakdown in May 1940 and had to return to the United States for medical treatment.
