Tempest in a teapot? “Tempest in a teapot” is the phrase used by Assemblyman Joel M. Weingarten to describe the furor taking place in the state’s daily press over tije school choice provision contained in New Jersey’s new school funding law. The furor, for those not familiar with it, arose during the Christmas-New Year’s week when a Trenton ^newspaper noted the new law contains a single-sentence paragraph permitting a child to attend the school district of his parent’s choice providing the chosen school district had a vacant seat available for the youngster. Since the publication o f the story, various members of the N.J. Legislature have, admitted they did not read the para graph contained on Page 6 o f the 72-page funding proposal drafted by the Whitman Administration. Whether the para graph went unread by all 120 members of the Senate and General Assembly is open to debate. Not open to debate is the fact there was no public discussion of the impact of the paragraph until after the votes were cast and Gov. Whitman signal the bill into law. Why then Assemblyman Weingarten’s “tempest in a teapot” characterization?
