Au THE MUSIC recorded on the first side of this album was originally written for keyboard instruments. Beginning with the Aria detta "La Frescobalda" by Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583-1643). Frescobaldi was one of the most important musicians of the seventeenth century both as a composer and performer and was organist of St. Peter's in Rome. The Aria called ''La Frescobalda'' is a set ofvariations on what may have been one of the composer's favorite tunes and contains five movements with the aria being repeated at the end. It is interesting to note that the third and fifth variations are dance movements: a gagliarda and corrente. The Prelude, Fugue and Allegro, BWV 998 by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685- 1750) was written for the lute or the harpsichord; however, some scholars have agreed that only the prelude was ever intended for the lute while others believe that the entire work was meant to be played on Bach's specially built lautenwerk or lute- harpsichord. This was a keyboard instrument that imitated the sound of the lute and was strung with gut instead of metal strings. It apparently sounded so much like the lute that one account says that "lutenists by profession might almost be deceived by it. " The question of instrumentation is academic since the entire work can be played Side One on the baroque lute and, in keeping with Bach's own practice of transferring music from one performing medium to another, it sounds just as much at home on the guitar. Girolamo Frescobaldi 5:28 Some of the most popular Romantic piano pieces are the forty-eight short Songs (Arr.: Johns) Without Words by Felix Mendelssohn ( 1809-184 7) written after 1830 and published Prelude, Fugue and Allegro, BWV 998 .. Johann Sebastian Bach 11 :39 between 1834 and 1845. Guitarists need to be careful in transcribing piano music, Recitative, Agitated, Elegy, With Fire and Air. The opening statement of the recitativo is used again to close the work at the end of the arioso. Recitativo Bennett, like Mendelssohn, was able to successfully put his musical ideas into a very Agitato few measures. Elegiaco The two studies by Heitor Villa-Lobos ( 1887-1959) are among twelve written in Con fuoco Paris in 1929 and dedicated to Andres Segovia. Etude Number 5 uses an internal Arioso pedal throughout in thirds with the melody above and sometimes below. Etude Number 11 is more somber in mood and even violent at times. With his guitar music, Villa-Lobos was the first composer to, as Bream puts it, "make the guitar sound big." Etudes 5 and 11 0929) ...... Heitor Villa-Lobos 2:07 The guitar music of Cuban composer-guitarist Leo Brouwer (b. 1939) gained 3 :52 almost immediate world-wide acceptance by performers and audiences alike. Elogio de la Danza ( 1964) ...... Leo Brouwer 5:33 Brouwer received his musical training in the United States at the Juilliard School and Lento at Hartt College. He has written for various combinations ofinstruments and is active Obstinato in the radio and film industry. The Elogio de la Danza is a concert favorite and uses 18:30 such devices as "golpe" (striking the bridge of the guitar) and "rasgueado" (strum- ming) to make its musical point. The Lento, pensive and dignified in nature, is sharply * * * contrasted by the more outgoing Obstinato with its exciting rhythms.
