Integrated Pest Management for Raspberry Beetle Order: Coleoptera Family: Byturidae Species: Byturus unicolor The raspberry beetle, also known as the raspberry fruitworm, is a product contaminant pest found in raspberry fields in Washington. The larvae, or fruitworm, may fall off with the fruit during machine harvest. This pest has often been controlled by a diazinon treatment at 5% bloom, before pollinators are brought into the field. The United States Environmental Protection Agency is seeking to reduce the use of organophosphates, such as diazinon, through higher restrictions and cancellations. New monitoring tools for the raspberry beetle have been developed and tested in Whatcom County. The Rebell® Bianco white sticky trap can be used to detect raspberry beetle levels in a field. This may help in determining what treatment, if any, is Figure 1: Adult raspberry required for control of the pest. beetle on a raspberry bud Biology: The adult raspberry beetle is between 0.15 and 0.2” in length, a reddish brown color with short hairs covering its whole body (see figure 1). Overwintering in the soil, the adult emerges in the spring between mid-April and mid-May depending on soil temperatures. The adults feed on leaves, often on the new primocane leaves, but in areas of high populations they will also feed on upper floricane leaves. Adults are then attracted to flower buds and blooms where mating and, subsequently, ovipositing occurs. Larvae (or fruitworm) emerge from the eggs on the flower or immature fruit and begin feeding on the receptacle. The larvae are between 0.1” and 0.25” in length depending on the time of season. -

I will, however, spare members. Fortunately other contributors lighten the burden and I will try to summarise just some of our activities. Between the Committee and its sub-committees and our many contacts, much happens over the course of a year and it is this that makes MAN a successful and much respected group. Also the support we receive from members, from ‘hands-on’ to a few words of encouragement, is much appreciated. The series of Forward Planning seminars continue. One outcome this year was the realisation of the need for a secretary/events organiser to support the ever widening work of the Committee. I am delighted to announce that we have appointed Mrs Marie Ward to the post and she attended her first meeting in May. Marie will be working part-time with the Committee and its officers and she has computer-based skills that will be much used in the future. We continue to develop our research and publication activities. Members will be aware of our first CD, ‘The Herefordshire Pomona’ which has received considerable praise and is now available (thanks to our Webmaster) on e-Bay! The CD was followed by a pack of postcards based on the Pomona. The production of CD2, as it is referred to, or ‘Vintage Fruit’, is now well under way thanks to Richard Wheeler. -

La primera población, provenía de Xalapa, México, y fue originalmente colectada y criada sobre pupas de la Mosca Mexicana de la Fruta, Anastrepha ludens Loew (Diptera: Tephritidae). La segunda población, originaria de Athens, Georgia, fue colectada y criada sobre prepupas de avispas de barro, Trypoxylon politum Say (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae). Estudios de PCR de la región ITS2 confi rmaron que ambas poblaciones del parasitoide pertenecen a la misma especie; lo que nos provee de un perfi l molecular taxonómico muy útil debído a que las hembras de las diversas especies de Melittobia son superfi cialmente similares. La amplifi cación del gen de superfi cie de proteina (wsp) de Wolbachia confi rmó la presencia de este endosimbionte en ambas poblaciones. -

This paper compiles an updated checklist of the Sicilian Cassidinae and Cryptocephalini species (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae, Cassidinae and Cryptocephalinae) starting from a critical bibliographic screening and adding new material, mainly collected by the first author in the last few decades. A total of 61 species is reported, withnew data for many rarely collected taxa. The provided data expand the known distribution of many uncommon species in Sicily. Two species are recorded for the first time: Cassida inopinata Sassi and Borowiec, 2006 and Cryptocephalus (Cryptocephalus) bimaculatus Fabricius, 1781 and two uncertain presences are confirmed: Cassida deflorata Suffrian, 1844 and Cassida nobilis Linné, 1758. The presence of other sixteen species is considered questionable and needs further confirmation. 1. Introduction Leaf beetles are all phytophagous Coleoptera. They are usually of a rather stout build, with a rounded or oval shape, often brightly coloured or with metallic hues. Worldwide some 32500 species in 2114 genera of Chrysomelidae have been described (Slipi´ nski´ et al. 2011), the majority of which occur in the tropics as is the case with numerous other Coleoptera families. Currently, the leaf beetle subfamily Cassidinae comprises the tortoise beetles (Cassidinae s. str.) and the hispine beetles (Hispinae s. str.) (Borowiec 1995; Hsiao and Windsor 1999; Chaboo 2007). So far, the Cassidinae list about 6300 described species within more than 340 genera, being the second most speciose subfamily of leaf beetles (Borowiec and Swi˛etoja´ nska´ 2014). -

Apple cultivars can be maintained for centuries in plant collections through grafting, and some are thought to date as far back as Roman times. Molecular markers provide a means to reconstruct pedigrees and thus shed light on the recent history of migration and trade of biological materials. The objective of the present study was to identify relationships within a set of over 1400 mostly old apple cultivars using whole-genome SNP data (~ 253 K SNPs) in order to reconstruct pedigrees. Results: Using simple exclusion tests, based on counting the number of Mendelian errors, more than one thousand parent-offspring relations and 295 complete parent-offspring families were identified. Additionally, a grandparent couple was identified for the missing parental side of 26 parent-offspring pairings. Among the 407 parent-offspring relations without a second identified parent, 327 could be oriented because one of the individuals was an offspring in a complete family or by using historical data on parentage or date of recording. -
