This Companion’s chapters chart the development of Vargas Llosa’s writings, from his rise to prominence in the early 1960s to the award of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2010. The volume traces his literary trajectory, and the ways in which he has reinvented himself as a writer. Hollywood, U. S.-Mexican Relations, and the Devolution of the «Golden Age» of Mexican Cinema SETH FEIN The 1948 release of Río Escondido was a triumph of the Mexican film industry. It represented the possibilities that seemed in reach of the postwar Mexican film sector: sovereign control of an economically viable, artistically vibrant, nationally dominant, mass-cultural medium capable of producing Mexican stories, myths, and images. In the film, the President of the Republic-played in a cameo by President Miguel Alemán himself-personally sends Rosaura Salazar, portrayed by María Félix, to the town of Río Escondido to teach in a public school. He explains to her that it is her duty to fulfill the nation’s destiny for a modern literate society. In the town, aided by an idealistic young doctor, played by Fernando Fernández, she challenges local corruption and intimidation-loyally serving the education program of the central government. She invokes national symbols of liberal progress and patriotism, especially Benito Juárez, in teaching her indian students. Although the film is paternalistic toward indian culture, glorifies the benevolent centralized authority of the state, and often treats various characters as sentimental stereotypes, these flaws are the same ones common to commercial mass culture worldwide. What is significant about Río Escondido is its nationalist plot and theme, and the way they were expressed in Emilio Fernández’s script and direction and through the powerful images created by Gabriel Figueroa’s award-winning cinematography. Whatever its flaws, Río Escondido is a decidedly Mexican film of very high technical quality. 1 The release of Río Escondido came during a period of tremendous quantitative and qualitative growth in the Mexican film sector. -

In ‘prison-house of love’i: The Bad Girl and bad girls of Mario Vargas Llosa Tajuddin Ahmed Netaji Subhas Ashram Mahavidyalaya, India Abstract Mario Vargas Llosa’s recent novel The Bad Girl centers around a sexually liberated woman who is in search of individual emancipation through transgressions of all social norms. The issue of female sexuality and its relation with woman liberation occupies an important and debatable position in Feminist discourse. Llosa’s own attitude to liberated female sexuality had been an ambivalent one. In this paper I would like analyse and explore the question of woman’s liberation in the novel of Mario Vargas Llosa, taking into account the major conflicting Feminist discourses as well as the presence and erasure of female sexuality in the history of Latin American novels. [Keywords: Sexuality, Transgression, Feminism, Identity, Emancipation, Oppression, Eroticism] One must wear one's vices like a royal mantle, with poise. Like an aureole that one is unaware of, that one pretends not to perceive. It is only natures entirely given over to vice whose contours do not grow blurred in the hyaline mire of the atmosphere. Beauty is a marvelous vice of form.ii The above representative fragment from a poem by Cesar Moro was used by Mario Vargas Llosa as an epigraph to his novel In Praise of the Stepmother (1988). The poem by Moro shows the poet’s personal obsession with two, “recurrent and related themes: a disdain for the rational elements and social conventions that censure the imagination and an exploration of forbidden experiences…” (Kristal, p.13). -

Hershberg Professor of History and International Affairs George Washington University ([email protected]) Presented to the Panel, “New Perspectives on Latin America’s Cold War” International Studies Association/Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (ISA/FLACSO) Conference, Buenos Aires, Argentina, 23 July 2014 1 This presentation draws on my ongoing book project on the US-Cuban-Brazilian triangular relationship (or quadrangular, if one adds their relations with what was quaintly still known as the “Sino-Soviet bloc”) at the height of the Cold War, in the early 1960s, a span encompassing such tumultuous events as the Cuban Revolution, the Bay of Pigs affair, and the Cuban Missile Crisis. My inquiry originated in, and spun off from, my longstanding in the international history of the October 1962 missile crisis, when in the late 1990s I first noticed (in a translated Soviet document) that at the height of the missile crisis, Brazil was involved in a secret mediation effort between US President John F. Kennedy and Cuban leader Fidel Castro. That Soviet document described a meeting between Castro and a special emissary sent by Brazil’s president, João Goulart, just after the crisis climaxed, relaying what in fact was a laundered U.S. proposal (although Castro didn’t realize that). On searching for background in the relevant literature—to use in annotating the document for the Cold War International History Project Bulletin, which I then edited—I discovered that none existed.
