2 The Archangel FACES OF THE PARISH GETTING TO KNOW YOUR FELLOW PARISHIONERS

SEMINARIAN MATTHEW McDONALD & FAMILY

Through the FOCA (Fellowship of Orthodox Christians in America) Seminarian Support Program, Archangel Michael Parish has adopted the McDonald family, currently at St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Theological Seminary. The FOCA works with the administration at our seminaries to identify families who are in financial need. The FOCA connects these families with churches, organizations and individuals who volunteer to commit a set amount of monthly financial support. Depending on the need and as each family’s needs are met, the family next on the list is matched with remaining donors. This is one example of the FOCA’s commitment to our seminaries and the growth of the Orthodox Church. If you are interested in becoming a donor or learning more about the FOCA, please contact Becky Tesar at bjtesar@ gmail.com or talk to her after church.

Hello, Archangel Michael family! My name is Matthew and I’m a first-year seminarian at St. Tikhon’s. My wife Christine and I have two children, a 10-year old girl, Abigail, and a five-year old boy, Aidan. My wife and I both converted to Orthodoxy 13 years ago shortly after we were married.

Before coming to St. Tikhon’s, we attended St. Thomas the Apostle in Springfield, MO. While in Missouri, my wife worked as a Special Education teacher for middle school, and I worked as a specialized foster care case manager. Feeling a call to serve the Church, Christine and I decided last year that it was time to go to seminary. At St. Tikhon’s, my wife and I stay pretty involved. Christine sings in the mixed choir and takes classes with Benedict Sheehan on advanced music and conducting. I help teach the church school for teenagers. Thank you so much for your support!

We are looking for both new and longtime parishioners to volunteer to be featured in our FACES OF THE PARISH section. Our main objective is not only to introduce new families to the parish, but to introduce our longtime members to our new families. Please contact the church office at [email protected] to volunteer!

St. Michael’s celebrated Christmas on January 7th following the old Julian calendar for many years. We began celebrating Christmas on December 25th in 1982 when the Orthodox Church in America officially changed to the revised Julian calendar.

Though many Orthodox in the have made the switch, former Union, Middle Eastern Churches and several European countries tend towards the “old calendar”. Here in Cleveland, the Ukranian Orthodox and Serbian Orthodox still celebrate on January 7. The one feast day that is celebrated on the same day by all Orthodox Christians is Pascha, or Easter.

JANUARY 2019 13 HEALTH HINT 130 january 2019 - hand washing BY KRISTEN DOTSON, RN HAND WASHING

Keeping hands clean through improved hand hygiene is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. Many diseases and conditions are spread by not washing hands with soap and clean, running water. If clean, running water is not accessible, as is common in many parts of the world, use soap and available water. If soap and water are unavailable, use an alcohol- based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol to clean hands.

When should you wash your hands? • Before, during, and after preparing food • Before eating food • Before and after caring for someone who is sick • Before and after treating a cut or wound • After using the toilet • After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet • After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing • After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste • After handling pet food or pet treats • After touching garbage

How should you wash your hands? • Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap. • Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. • Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice. • Rinse your hands well under clean, running water. • Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

How do you use hand sanitizers? • Apply the product to the palm of one hand (read the label to learn the correct amount). • Rub your hands together. • Rub the product over all surfaces of your hands and fingers until your hands are dry.

Have a Healthy New Year!!
