Stile Antico records for Decca. PROGRAM NOTES Our program tonight is devoted to the wonderful music of Josquin des Prez, marking 500 years since his death in 1521. Josquin was unquestionably a star in his own time: no lesser figure than Martin Luther praised him as “the master of the notes,” while for the theorist Glarean, “no one has more effectively expressed the passions of the soul in music…his talent is beyond description.” So what is it about Josquin that exerted such a spell on the generations that followed—and which still speaks so eloquently to us today? Much about Josquin’s biography and career remains shadowy: it isn’t always possible to pin down where he was working, and—with a few exceptions—the chronology of his works can only be attempted on stylistic grounds. -

NEWSLETTER of the American Handel Society
NEWSLETTER of The American Handel Society Volume XXVII, Number 2 Summer 2012 FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK SUMMER 2012 I would like to thank all the members of the Society who have paid their membership dues for 2012, and especially those who paid to be members of the Georg-Friedrich-Händel Gesellschaft and/or friends of The Handel Institute before the beginning of June, as requested by the Secretary/Treasurer. For those of you who have not yet renewed your memberships, may I urge you to do so. Each year the end of spring brings with it the Handel Festivals in Halle and Göttingen, the latter now regularly scheduled around the moveable date of Pentecost, which is a three-day holiday in Germany. Elsewhere in this issue of the Newsletter you will find my necessarily selective Report from Halle. While there I heard excellent reports on the staging of Amadigi at Göttingen. Perhaps other members of the AHS would be willing to provide reports on the performances at Göttingen, and also those at Halle that I was unable to attend. If so, I am sure that the Newsletter Angelica Kauffmann, British, born in Switzerland, 1741-1807 Portrait of Sarah Editor would be happy to receive them. WOP SONG: TUNE & ECHO A Stage Play with Music Written by Vian Andrews Italian translation by Claudio Ginocchietti Fourth Revision completed 10 Feb '17 Based on an original idea Copyright October 2016 Vian Andrews 4583 Neville Street Burnaby, BC V5J 3G9 778-378-7954 WOPSONG: TUNE & ECHO ACT 1 A sunny piazza in the dilapidated, dun-colored village of Calabro in the mountains of southern Italy, 2016. On the left, the main door to the village church, on the right a cafe whose sign is badly in need of repainting, with two tables with chairs. In between the church and the cafe there is a row of three drab houses. On the first house and third house a shutter or two is open, but the shutters of the center house are closed and one or two are hanging askew. A small riser stands in front of the center house. Two older men play cards at one of the cafe tables. An old woman, dressed in black, sits on the stoop of the first house, taking in the scene while absentmindedly gnashing her teeth. Suddenly the blast of a horn from an arriving bus is heard off left, making the old woman and the men jump. Father Sarducci, the town priest opens the door of the church and steps out at the same time, Gaetano, the owner of the cafe and his wife, Giuseppina, step out of the cafe to find out what is going on. The voices of three men singing Bon Jovi’s This House is Not for Sale is heard coming from the direction of the bus. -

INTRODUCTION The Ajuda library was established after the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 near the royal palace of the same name to replace the court library which had been destroyed in the earthquake, and from its creation it incorporated many different collections, which were either acquired, donated or in certain cases confiscated, belonging to private owners, members of the royal family or religious institutions. Part of the library holdings followed the royal family to Brazil after 1807 and several of these remained there after the court returned to Portugal in 1822. The printed part of those holdings constituted the basis of the National Library of Rio de Janeiro. The building itself is now part of the palace built between 1802 and 1835 to replace the wooden palace erected after the earthquake. -
