Episode 406 – Sifu Abe Santos | whistlekickMartialArtsRadio.com Jeremy Lesniak: Hey there, everybody! Welcome, this is whistlekick martial arts radio episode 406. Today, my guest is Sifu Abe Santos. My name is Jeremy Lesniak, I'm your host of the show, I'm the founder of whistlekick and I love martial arts. I love all kinds of martial arts, specifically traditional martial arts and that’s what we get to on this show. We talk about traditional martial arts. Karate, Kung Fu, Taekwondo, Filipino Martial arts and historical European martial arts and Capoeira and so many others. In fact, if I was to make a list, that would be a very long intro and I’d still find a way to leave something out and I would offend someone so if I didn’t mention your art, please don’t get hurt. I just picked a few off the top of my head that, statistically, are the biggest ones based on our past guests. If you want to see all the episodes with past guests and topic shows and all of that because we do this twice a week, you could head to whistlekickmartialartsradio.com and see all the episodes with the guest notes and pictures and a ton more. If you head to whistlekick.com, you're going to find everything that we do because we do more than the show. We have products and you can purchase those with 15% off with the code PODCAST15 but we also do a lot of other things. We’re behind a lot of projects on the web, just trying to help grow the martial arts and spread the benefits of martial arts training so go there, find out our other stuff.

  • Bruce Lee's Biography
BIOGRAPHY Bruce Jun Fan Lee was born in the hour of the Dragon, between 6 and 8 a.m., in the year of the Dragon on November 27, 1940 at the Jackson Street Hospital in San Francisco’s China- town. Today, a plaque in the hospital’s entry commemorates the place of his birth. Bruce’s birth, in the hour and the year of the Dragon, is a powerful symbol in Chinese astrology. It would be a strong omen of the powerful life that was to be lived by Bruce Lee and the explosive impact his life would have on countless others. Bruce was the fourth child born to Lee Hoi Chuen and his wife Grace Ho. He had two older sisters, Phoebe and Agnes, an older brother, Peter, and a younger brother, Robert. Lee Hoi Chuen was, by profession, a comedian in the Chinese opera and an actor in Cantonese films. At the time Bruce was born, Mr. and Mrs. Lee were on tour with the opera company in the United States. Thus, it was fortuitous for Bruce’s future that his birth took place in America, as he would return 18 years later to claim his birthright of American citizenship. Bruce’s parents gave him the name “Jun Fan.” Since it is Chinese custom to put the surname first, Bruce’s full name is written Lee Jun Fan. The true meaning of Jun Fan deserves an explanation as it, too, would foretell the journey of the newly born Lee son. Literally, JUN means “to arouse to the active state” or “to make prosperous.” It was a common middle name used by Hong Kong Chinese boys in those days, understandably because China and the Chinese people were very vulnerable at that time, and everyone, including Bruce’s parents, wanted the “sleep- ing lion of the East” to wake up.

I have always been a Bruce Lee nut. I remember as a kid after going to the cinema I would re-enact the scenes and the screams and the confidence. It was amazing. I would use my left thumb to flick the “blood” from the side of my mouth. As a kid I didn’t think about what drove me to this martial artist. The feeling of invincibility, the ability to cure injustice, the ability of the common man to take their rights back from the bullies. When I moved to Seattle in early 2001, I had no idea I would be on the same soil as one of my heroes. I had all the books authored by Bruce and it unraveled, Bruce had gone to UW (pronounced U-Dub) and studied philosophy. I also found out that Bruce had married Sifu Taky Kimura and me at Taky’s from Washington State. They had met at UW. I did go to Lakeview Backyard Barn in Woodinville turned Dojo – Seattle Jun Fan Gung Fu Club Cemetery where Bruce is buried to pay my respects. I did see 2002 Brandon next to his dad. I did go to Chinatown hoping to find traces and hints about this master. It was my weekend chore to go down to Chinatown and search for Bruce’s students.

BRUCE LEE THE TAO OF GUNG FU: COMMENTARIES ON THE CHINESE MARTIAL ARTS (PAPERBACK) Tuttle Publishing, United States, 2016. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. In the months leading up to his death, Bruce Lee was working on this definitive study of the Chinese martial arts collectively known as Kung Fu or Gung Fu. This book has now been edited and is published here for the first time in its entirety. Bruce Lee totally revolutionised the practice of martial arts and brought them into the modern world by promoting the idea that students have the right to pick and choose those techniques and training regimens which suit their own personal needs and fighting styles. He developed a new style of his own called Jeet Kune Do; combining many elements from dierent masters and dierent traditions. This was considered heretical at the time within martial arts circles, where one was expected to study with only a single master and Lee was the first martial artist to attempt this.
