DIRECTOR’S NOTES In 2015, I began working on the treatment and first concept art pieces for Paradise Hills as my own kind of personal exorcism. I imagined more of a narrative feature than my arthouse short Disco Inferno – a tale that was Gothic, yet futuristic, a diverse story about universal female fears (loneliness, social rejection, hyper-control) set in our own world, a few decades into the future. I wanted to give girls and women an entertaining fairy tale that acted like a poison apple, filled with all of the visual and narrative treats that had fascinated me as a teenager: High fantasy, ‘90s shôjo manga, science fiction and costume dramas.

    BIOGRAPHY Bruce Jun Fan Lee was born in the hour of the Dragon, between 6 and 8 a.m., in the year of the Dragon on November 27, 1940 at the Jackson Street Hospital in San Francisco’s China- town. Today, a plaque in the hospital’s entry commemorates the place of his birth. Bruce’s birth, in the hour and the year of the Dragon, is a powerful symbol in Chinese astrology. It would be a strong omen of the powerful life that was to be lived by Bruce Lee and the explosive impact his life would have on countless others. Bruce was the fourth child born to Lee Hoi Chuen and his wife Grace Ho. He had two older sisters, Phoebe and Agnes, an older brother, Peter, and a younger brother, Robert. Lee Hoi Chuen was, by profession, a comedian in the Chinese opera and an actor in Cantonese films. At the time Bruce was born, Mr. and Mrs. Lee were on tour with the opera company in the United States. Thus, it was fortuitous for Bruce’s future that his birth took place in America, as he would return 18 years later to claim his birthright of American citizenship. Bruce’s parents gave him the name “Jun Fan.” Since it is Chinese custom to put the surname first, Bruce’s full name is written Lee Jun Fan. The true meaning of Jun Fan deserves an explanation as it, too, would foretell the journey of the newly born Lee son. Literally, JUN means “to arouse to the active state” or “to make prosperous.” It was a common middle name used by Hong Kong Chinese boys in those days, understandably because China and the Chinese people were very vulnerable at that time, and everyone, including Bruce’s parents, wanted the “sleep- ing lion of the East” to wake up.

Martial Arts & Media Culture in the Information Era: Glocalization, Heterotopia, Hyperculture Tim Trausch DOI ABSTRACT 10.18573/mas.78 This chapter is derived from the Editor’s Introduction to the edited collection Chinese Martial Arts and Media Culture: Global Perspectives [Rowman & Littlefield International, 2018]. The collection explores how narratives and aesthetics of the martial arts genre(s) are shaped and imbued with meaning in changing KEYWORDs social, cultural, and media arrangements. Drawing from a range of recent media texts, this introductory chapter discusses the Chinese martial arts, media culture, global circulation of signs and images of (Chinese) martial arts media aesthetics, key visuals, information and their engagement with alleged national, cultural, textual, and network societies, self and other, generic, and media borders.     2015-05-28 18:29 CEST Kung Fury tar över internet - igen Äntligen, efter tre år, 180 000 fans som donerat $650,000 dollar som bidragit till Kickstarter-projektet, en tripp ner till Cannesfestivalen, sömnlösa nätter och en musikvideo med David Hasselhoff så är vi nära premiären av Kung Fury. “Nothing is worth doing if you’re not overdoing it.” Torsdagen den 28 maj så presenteras en av de mest framgångsrika och populära indie-projekten i Kickstarters historia. Projektet startades i en källare i norra Sverige av en kille som var trött på sitt vanliga jobb med en hyfsad snabb dator. David Sandberg, 28, flyttade in med sin mamma och började arbete med hans kortfilm ”Kung Fury” som var en hyllning till 80-talets actionfilmer. Ett arbete som nog de flesta människor nog skulle kalla ett ”långskott”. På grund av den svåra och framförallt dyra processen av att hitta en skådespelare till huvudrollen så beslöt sig Sandberg att ge rollen till sig själv. Han bjöd även in sina vänner till projektet för att hjälpa till, vem skulle kunna säga nej till att vara med i en film som innehåller både dinosaurier och vikingar? Processen att spela in en tre minuter lång filmtrailer påbörjades. Vänskap och teamkänsla har gjort Kung Fury till den film det blev. Redan från början har vänner och främlingar hjälpt till med allt från ljud och ljus, visuella effekter till att spela några av filmens största roller. Människor över hela jorden har hjälpt till att göra Kung Fury till en verklighet, och som David sa i hans tal under Cannesfestivalen: ”Jag är inte ensam längre.” Kung Fury är producerad av Laser Unicorn Productions med hjälp av Lampray, Universal Stories, Svt, SFI, Film i Västerbotten och Länsstyrelsen i Västerbotten.
