“Nothing is worth doing if you’re not overdoing it.” Presents Directed by Alice Waddington Running time: 94 min Genre: Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Thriller Press Contact: KWPR - Katrina Wan, [email protected] Samuel Goldwyn Films – Ryan Boring, [email protected] LOGLINE A young woman is sent to Paradise Hills to be reformed only to learn that behind the high-class facility’s beauty is a sinister secret. SYNOPSIS On an isolated island, Uma (Emma Roberts) wakes up to find herself at Paradise Hills, a facility where high-class families send their daughters to become perfect versions of themselves. The facility is run by the mysterious Duchess (Milla Jovovich) where calibrated treatments including etiquette classes, vocal lessons, beauty treatments, gymnastics and restricted diets, revolve all physical and emotional shortcomings within two months. The outspoken Uma finds solace and friendship in other Paradise Hills residents -- Chloe (Danielle McDonald), Yu (Awkwafina) and Mexican popstar Amarna (Eiza Gonzalez). Uma soon realizes that lurking behind all this beauty is a sinister secret. It's a race against the clock as Uma and her friends try to escape Paradise Hills before it consumes them all. DIRECTOR’S NOTES In 2015, I began working on the treatment and first concept art pieces for Paradise Hills as my own kind of personal exorcism. I imagined more of a narrative feature than my arthouse short Disco Inferno – a tale that was Gothic, yet futuristic, a diverse story about universal female fears (loneliness, social rejection, hyper-control) set in our own world, a few decades into the future. I wanted to give girls and women an entertaining fairy tale that acted like a poison apple, filled with all of the visual and narrative treats that had fascinated me as a teenager: High fantasy, ‘90s shôjo manga, science fiction and costume dramas.

The collection explores how narratives and aesthetics of the martial arts genre(s) are shaped and imbued with meaning in changing KEYWORDs social, cultural, and media arrangements. • 1980S Retro Film Culture and the Masculinity of Cult
IT'S ALL COMING BACK TO YOU: 1980s RETRO FILM CULTURE AND THE MASCULINITY OF CULT Ryan Collins Thesis Prepared for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS August 2017 APPROVED: Harry Benshoff, Committee Chair Kevin Heffernan, Committee Member James Martin, Committee Member Eugene Martin, Chair of the Department of Media Arts David Holdeman, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Victor Prybutok, Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Collins, Ryan. It's All Coming Back to You: 1980s Retro Film Culture and the Masculinity of Cult. Master of Arts (Media Industry and Critical Studies), August 2017, 130 pp., bibliography, 214 titles. The 1980s is a formative decade in American history. America sought to reestablish itself as a global power and to reassert the dominant ideology of white, patriarchal capitalism. Likewise, media producers in the 1980s sought to reassert the dominance of the white, male, muscled body in filmic representations. The identity politics of the 1980s and the depictions of the white, muscled body once prominent in the 1980s have been the site of conservative nostalgia for a young, male-dominated, cult audience that is a subset of a larger cultural trend known as retro film culture. This thesis provides historical context behind the populist 1980s B- action films from Cannon Group, Inc that celebrate violent masculinity in filmic representations with white, male action heroes. Equally important is the revival of VHS collecting and how this 1980s-inspired subculture reinforces white, patriarchal capitalism through the cult films they valorize and their capitalistic trading practices despite their claims of oppositionality against mainstream taste and Hollywood films.

There is an important relationship between the ‘Nazi’ and its audience; related to but separate from the historical Nazi, the creation and reception of the ‘Nazi’ both enables and exemplifies the continual processing of the past. Using a purpose-built framework (concept and terminology) for the study of the ‘Nazi’ as a phenomenon in and of itself, in combination with Freud’s concept of the uncanny, this thesis examines the dynamics of the relationship between the ‘Nazi’ and its audience in four examples: television episodes “Deaths-Head Revisited,” “He’s Alive” (The Twilight Zone), and “Patterns of Force” (Star Trek); and Serdar Somuncu’s performances/readings of Mein Kampf.
