Morgan Music Highlights Music at the Morgan: Collection Highlights The list on the following pages is a selection of highlights from the music holdings at the Morgan Library & Museum. Browse the list alphabetically by composer and title or search within the document using Control-F or Command-F. For more information about any item, search our library catalog, CORSAIR. This list is representative but not comprehensive. It features 850 items from the 40,000 in the Morgan’s full music holdings spanning six centuries, including eleven hundred music manuscripts, twelve thousand rare printed scores, seven thousand musicians’ letters, thousands of librettos, playbills, and portraits, and the world’s largest repository of Gilbert and Sullivan materials. Learn about the Morgan’s music holdings here, and access our Research Guide here. While the list contains only a representative sampling from our music holdings, it includes two categories of manuscript not available in Music Manuscripts Online, our online repository of digitized manuscripts: those still in copyright, and those in the Robert Owen Lehman collection held on deposit at the Morgan. Lehman collection items are blue in the list. The Morgan’s collections are also accessible via in-person visits to our Reading Room (by permission and appointment) and via Digital Imaging requests (by permission). We invite you to explore the musical riches at the Morgan. In addition to our collections of rare music materials, the Morgan’s vibrant concerts, both online and in our Gilder Lehrman Hall, feature exceptional artists presenting programs from early music to contemporary works, often drawing from our music collections. Aaron Copland: Famous American Composer, Copland was born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 14, 1900. The child of Jewish immigrants from Lithuania, he first learned to play the piano from his older sister. At the age of sixteen he went to Manhattan to study with Rubin Goldmark, a respected private music instructor who taught Copland the fundamentals of counterpoint and composition. During these early years he immersed himself in contemporary classical music by attending performances at the New York Symphony and Brooklyn Academy of Music. He found, however, that like many other young musicians, he was attracted to the classical history and musicians of Europe. So, at the age of twenty, he left New York for the Summer School of Music for American Students at Fountainebleau, France. In France, Copland found a musical community unlike any he had known. While in Europe, Copeland met many of the important artists of the time, including the famous composer Serge Koussevitsky. Koussevitsky requested that Copland write a piece for the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The piece, “Symphony for Organ and Orchestra” (1925) was Copland‟s entry into the life of professional American music. He followed this with “Music for the Theater” (1925) and “Piano Concerto” (1926), both of which relied heavily on the jazz idioms of the time. For Copland, jazz was the first genuinely American major musical movement. From jazz he hoped to draw the inspiration for a new type of symphonic music, one that could distinguish itself from the music of Europe. In the late 1920s Copland‟s attention turned to popular music of other countries.

Master of Music (Theory), August, 1995, 86 pp., 22 examples, 5 figures, bibliography, 122 titles. This thesis presents an analysis of Copland's first major serial work, the Quartet for Piano and Strings (1950), using pitch-class set theory and tonal analytical techniques. The first chapter introduces Copland's Piano Quartet in its historical context and considers major influences on his compositional development. The second chapter takes up a pitch-class set approach to the work, emphasizing the role played by the eleven-tone row in determining salient pc sets. Chapter Three re-examines many of these same passages from the viewpoint of tonal referentiality, considering how Copland is able to evoke tonal gestures within a structural context governed by pc-set relationships. The fourth chapter will reflect on the dialectic that is played out in this work between pc-sets and tonal elements, and considers the strengths and weaknesses of various analytical approaches to the work.

Catalogue of Works Barry Peter Ould In preparing this catalogue, I am indebted to Thomas Slattery (The Instrumentalist 1974), Teresa Balough (University of Western Australia 1975), Kay Dreyfus (University of Mel- bourne 1978–95) and David Tall (London 1982) for their original pioneering work in cata- loguing Grainger’s music.1 My ongoing research as archivist to the Percy Grainger Society (UK) has built on those references, and they have greatly helped both in producing cata- logues for the Society and in my work as a music publisher. The Catalogue of Works for this volume lists all Grainger’s original compositions, settings and versions, as well as his arrangements of music by other composers. The many arrangements of Grainger’s music by others are not included, but details may be obtained by contacting the Percy Grainger Society.2 Works in the process of being edited are marked ‡. Léon Goossens and the Oboe Quintets of Arnold Bax (1922) and Arthur Bliss (1927) By © 2017 Matthew Butterfield DMA, University of Kansas, 2017 M.M., University of Wisconsin-Madison, 2011 B.S., The Pennsylvania State University, 2009 Submitted to the graduate degree program in Music and the Graduate Faculty of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts. Chair: Dr. Margaret Marco Dr. Colin Roust Dr. Sarah Frisof Dr. Eric Stomberg Dr. Michelle Hayes Date Defended: 2 May 2017 The dissertation committee for Matthew Butterfield certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: Léon Goossens and the Oboe Quintets of Arnold Bax (1922) and Arthur Bliss (1927) Chair: Dr. Margaret Marco Date Approved: 10 May 2017 ii Abstract Léon Goossens’s virtuosity, musicality, and developments in playing the oboe expressively earned him a reputation as one of history’s finest oboists. His artistry and tone inspired British composers in the early twentieth century to consider the oboe a viable solo instrument once again. Goossens became a very popular and influential figure among composers, and many works are dedicated to him. His interest in having new music written for oboe and strings led to several prominent pieces, the earliest among them being the oboe quintets of Arnold Bax (1922) and Arthur Bliss (1927). Bax’s music is strongly influenced by German romanticism and the music of Edward Elgar. This led critics to describe his music as old-fashioned and out of touch, as it was not intellectual enough for critics, nor was it aesthetically pleasing to the masses.
