Prof. Gian Carlo Di Renzo is currently Professor and Chair at the University of Perugia (2004 - ), and Director of the Reproductive and Perinatal Medicine Center (1996 - ) , former Director of the Midwifery School (2004-2016), University of Perugia, in addition to being the Director of the Permanent International and European School of Perinatal and Reproductive Medicine (PREIS) in Florence (2012 - ) . After graduation cum laude at Medical School of the University of Padova (1975) , he was a research fellow at the Universities of Verona, Messina and Modena. After training at CHUV in Lausanne (Switzerland), at UCH in London (UK), at the University of Texas in Dallas (USA), and at the Catholic University in Nijmegen (NL) (1977-1982), he became a senior researcher at the University of Perugia. Since 2004 he is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University or Perugia., Chairman of the Midwifery School in the year 2004 to 2016, of the Ob Gyn Resident’s program since 2008 and of the PhD Program in Translational Medicine since 2012. He was general Secretary of the Italian Society of Perinatal Medicine, President of the Italian Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Secretary-Treasurer of the European Association of Perinatal Medicine, President from 2000 to 2002, 2002-2008 Executive Director and Chairman of the Educational Committee, Vice President of the World Association of Perinatal Medicine ( 2007-2013) . He is founding member of the World Association of Perinatal Medicine (1991- ), of the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (1991- ), and of the International Academy of Perinatal Medicine (2005- ). He is honorary member of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Societies of Hungary, Argentina, Ecuador, Romania, Russia, Tartastan, Armenia, Georgia, Czech Republic, Spain, the Croatian Society of Ultrasound in Medicine, the Spanish and the Ibero American Societies of Prenatal Diagnosis and the Romanian Academy of Sciences. Since 2011 he is member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He has been awarded the Gold Medal of the Bangladesh Society of Ob/Gyn (1992), the Maratea Children Prize (1994), the Foundation Corradi Prize for “Scientific Research” (1998), the Liley Medal from the “Fetus as a Patient” International Society (2006), the Allan Chang Visiting Professorship (Hong Kong, 2007) and the Maternity Prize of the European Association of Perinatal Medicine in Istanbul (2008). He has been awarded four Doctor Honoris Causa from the Purkinje University of Prague (2002), from the University of Athens (2008), from the Iuliu Hatieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Cluj-Napoca, Romania (2008) and from the University of St Petersburg (2013). He has been appointed Honorary Professorships at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina (2010), the State University of Moscow, the Siberian University of Tomsk, Russia (2011) the International University of Dubrovnik (Croatia, 2011) the University of Moldovia 2 in Chisinau (2012) the University of Serbia in Belgrade (2011) the Kuban State University of Krasnodar, Russia (2014), the Cornell University of New York (2010- 2014), the Kansas City University Medical Centre (2011) the Catholic University of Porto Alegre ( Brasil, 2015), the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, State University (2015). He was honorary consultant at the Hamad Women Hospital in Doha, Qatar, and at the Al-Adan Hospital in Kuwait City, Kuwait (2008-2012). He has been member of the Advisory Board of the Ian Donald School of Ultrasound (2008-2015). Since 2011 is Fellow ad eundem of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (London) (FRCOG) and since 2012 is Hon Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (FACOG) and from 2016 Hon Fellow of the Indian College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (ICOG). From 2012 to 2018 he served as Honorary Secretary General of FIGO (London) . In 2018 he has been appointed Director of the Department of Education & Communication of FIGO. Since 2014 he is member of the Advisory and Scientific Boards of the Foundation March of Dimes (USA). Since 2017 he has been nominated as a member of the WHO “Steering Committee on Maternal and Perinatal Health”. He is the Founder and President of the International Society on Cocoa and Chocolate in Medicine (ISCHOM, 2012-) and Secretary of the New European Surgical Academy (NESA, 2010- ). He has organised more than 300 national and international congresses and courses : XI European Congress of Perinatal Medicine (Rome, 1988), VII International Congress of ISSHP (Perugia, 1989), 2nd World Congress of Perinatal Medicine (Rome, 1993), 74th National Congress of the Italian Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Perugia, 2002), International Forum on “Birth” organised with Prof Roberto Romero from NIH-NICHD (Rome 2005, 2° ed. Chicago, 2011, 3° ed. Fortaleza 2015, 4° ed. Beijing 2016, 5° ed. From 1983 al 1998 he was co- Director of the International School of Perinatal Medicine at the Centro Ettore Majorana in Erice. From 1997 to 2006 he was co-Director of the European School of Perinatal Medicine. He is co-founder and co-President (with Moshe Hod) of the Biennal International Congresses on “Diabetes & Pregnancy” (9 editions, last in Barcelona 2017, next Firenze 2019). Scientific President of the 10th World Congress of Perinatal Medicine (Moscow, Russia, 2013). He is Founder and Director of the International Permanent School of Perinatal and Reproductive Medicine (PREIS School), endorsed by the European Society of Perinatal Medicine, WHO, FIGO, Emergency and other International Societies and based at Istituto degli Innocenti in Firenze (2012-). He is chair of the Organising Committee of the World Congresses of Maternal Fetal and Neonatal medicine (1st London, 2016, 2nd London 2019). From 1996 he is Founder and Editor-in-chief of the “Journal of Maternal Fetal and Neonatal Medicine”, for Taylor and Francis Pbl, UK, and since 1999 he is corresponding editor of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology . He is international reviewer of more than 20 international peer reviewed Journals. In 2018 he was invited by the Health Ministry of PR China to act as honoured Editor in Chief of the new Chinese journal in English language “Maternal Fetal Medicine”. His scientific production comprises over 1200 papers of which more than 400 in referred international journals and 82 books. He is author of the major Italian treatise of Obstetrics and 3 Gynecology for Verduci Pbl., Rome, 2005 (2 vol, 2400 pages, at its 2nd edition 2009). He also coauthored with U. Simeoni the Atlas “The Neonate and Perinate” (Informa , Oxford, 2006) with A. Malvasi the textbook-atlas on “Cesarean Delivery” (Taylor and Francis, London, 2016), with A. Malvasi and A. Tinelli the series of textbooks on “Management and Therapy of Pregnancy Complications” (Springer Pbl, 2016-2017) and the textbook on “Diabetes and pregnancy” (with M. Hod, A. De Leiva, O. Langer for Informa, Oxford now at 3rd ed, 2016). He has been invited as speaker to more than 1500 international and national congresses, meetings and courses in more than 110 different countries. He writes and speaks English, Spanish and French fluently.
