The program will be presented on Friday, January 10 at Boston University’s Marsh Chapel (8pm). Pilgrimage, a project of Lorelei’s new unPLUGGED multimedia series, explores concepts of spirituality and pilgrimage from ancient and contemporary perspectives. Consistent with Lorelei’s commitment to programming early and new music side-by-side, small ensembles set the stage for each half of the program with the music of Hildegard von Bingen and Guillaume Du Fay. Selected responsories from Hildegard’s Scivias portray some of the composer’s earliest visions. Hildegard’s transcendent melodies elevate the already rich symbolism in her deeply rooted poetry. The strength and optimism of Guillaume Du Fay’s motet Rite Majorem reflect its ties to the service for St. James the Greater, patron saint of pilgrims. His shrine at Santiago de Compostela in Northwest Spain continues to be a destination for Christian pilgrims from around the world. The World Premiere of two new works commissioned by the ensemble explore both secular and sacred concepts of spirituality: The Familiar Spirit (2013) turns the first recorded instance of "spirit-rapping" communication into a series of poetic vignettes that explore the spiritual and social significance of the medium in the 19th-century. -

His artistry and tone inspired British composers in the early twentieth century to consider the oboe a viable solo instrument once again. Goossens became a very popular and influential figure among composers, and many works are dedicated to him. His interest in having new music written for oboe and strings led to several prominent pieces, the earliest among them being the oboe quintets of Arnold Bax (1922) and Arthur Bliss (1927). Bax’s music is strongly influenced by German romanticism and the music of Edward Elgar. This led critics to describe his music as old-fashioned and out of touch, as it was not intellectual enough for critics, nor was it aesthetically pleasing to the masses. -

PETER OPIE - ADVISOR BALL STATE UNIVERSITY MUNCIE, INDIANA DECEMBER 2011 Among twentieth-century composers, Sergei Prokofiev is widely considered to be one of the most popular and important figures. He wrote in a variety of genres, including opera, ballet, symphonies, concertos, solo piano, and chamber music. In his cello works, of which three are the most important, his partnership with the great Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich was crucial. To understand their partnership, it is necessary to know their background information, including biographies, and to understand the political environment in which they lived. Sergei Prokofiev was born in Sontovka, (Ukraine) on April 23, 1891, and grew up in comfortable conditions. His father organized his general education in the natural sciences, and his mother gave him his early education in the arts. When he was four years old, his mother provided his first piano lessons and he began composition study as well. He studied theory, composition, instrumentation, and piano with Reinhold Glière, who was also a composer and pianist. Glière asked Prokofiev to compose short pieces made into the structure of a series.1 According to Glière’s suggestion, Prokofiev wrote a lot of short piano pieces, including five series each of 12 pieces (1902-1906). GaLLoway, Ph.D. Dean, Honors ColLege 2 Abstract This thesis contains a performance guide for Sergey Prokofiev’s Sonata for Flute and Piano in D Major, Op. 94 (1943). Prokofiev is among the most important Russian composers of the twentieth century. Recognized as a leading Neoclassicist, his bold innovations in harmony and his new palette of tone colors enliven the classical structures he embraced. This is especially evident in this flute sonata, which provides a microcosm of Prokofiev’s compositional style and highlights the beauty and virtuosic breadth of the flute in new ways. In Part 1 I have constructed an historical context for the sonata, with biographical information about Prokofiev, which includes anecdotes about his personality and behavior, and a discussion of the sonata’s commission and subsequent premiere. In Part 2 I offer an anaLysis of the piece with generaL performance suggestions and specific performance practice options for flutists that will assist them as they work toward an effective performance, one that is based on both the historically informed performance context, as well as remarks that focus on particular techniques, challenges and possible performance solutions. -

There were additional live recordings made during his Beethoven cycle toward the end of 2 Largo 7:37 1939. 3 Menuetto: Allegretto – Trio 3:50 Perhaps in an attempt to duplicate the success of his first Victor recordings with the New York 4 Finale: Allegro con spirito 3:20 HAYDN Philharmonic some nine years earlier, the repertoire chosen included a symphony each by Haydn and Recorded 8th March, 1938 in NBC Studio 8-H, New York City Mozart, a Rossini overture and a virtuoso orchestral showpiece. Unlike those earlier sessions held in Matrices: CS-021306-2, 021307-1, 021308-1, 021309-1, 021310-1 and 021311-1 the expansive acoustic of Carnegie Hall, however, these early NBC recordings were made in the First issued as Victor 14928 through 14930 in album M-451 Symphony No. 88 reverberation-free zone of Studio 8-H.
