After all, who doesn’t remember that phase of exis- tential crisis, where the entire world seems to be against you and no one can under- stand your deepest thoughts and feelings? The misunderstood young man or woman resorts then to talking back and disrespecting authority. While there are some who could use tougher discipline, the majority of teens will show themselves to be quite polite, caring, and even interested, if given a considerable amount of attention and opportunity. It was with this vision that Olympic Heights High School teacher Abbe Snyder, along with other teachers, decided to create a project where they would be able to pay tribute to Holocaust victims, and survivors, on a grander scale than what had been done previous years. All the while they were creating an environment where students would be able to give back to the community through a learning experience. The project consisted of gathering names of Jews who suffered through the horrors of the Holocaust, and attaching the names to a set of beads made by the students, which would hang in a boxed structure they put together, and then placed on display in a showcase on the school campus. • Betwee N Trauma and Resilience a Transnational Reading of Women’S Life Writing About Wartime Rape in Germany and Bosnia and Herzegovina
p Betwee n Trauma and Resilience A Transnational Reading of Women’s Life Writing about Wartime Rape in Germany and Bosnia and Herzegovina Agatha Schwartz and Tatjana Takševa ABSTRACT This article discusses the personal narratives (both published and personal interviews collected for the purpose of this study) of female survivors of wartime rape in post– World War II Germany and postconfl ict Bosnia and Herzegovina. The authors exam- ine how the women succeed in fi nding their words both for and beyond the rupture caused by the rapes through examples of life writing that challenge the dominant mas- culinist historical narrative of war created for ideological reasons and for the benefi t of the nation-state. Using theories of trauma and insights by feminist scholars and historians, the authors argue that a transnational reading of survivors’ accounts from these very diff erent geopolitical and historical contexts not only shows multiple points of mutual infl uence, but also how these narratives can make a signifi cant contribution, both locally and globally, when it comes to revisiting how wartime rape is memorial- ized, and how lessons learned from the two contexts can be relevant and applicable in other situations of armed confl ict as well. KEYWORDS: agency, memory, narratives of women survivors, trauma, wartime rape p In this article, through the narratives of women survivors we explore the eff ects and transgenerational consequences of rape during two twentieth-century episodes of armed confl ict: the end of World War II in Germany and the war in Bosnia and Herze- govina (former Yugoslavia), 1992–1995.

Prof. Dr. Hakan Kırımlı July, 2019 This thesis traces the steps of the Hungarian foreign policy from 1918 to 1946, and analyzes the impact of revisionism after the Treaty of Trianon on Hungarian foreign policy decisions and calculations after the First World War. Placing the Hungarian revisionism at its center, this thesis shows the different situation Hungary had as a South European power as an ally of Germany throughout the Second World War and subsequently under the Soviet occupation. It also argues that it was the interlinked Hungarian foreign policy steps well before 1941, the official Hungarian participation in the war, which made Hungary a belligerent country. Also, based largely on the American archival documents, this study places Hungary into a retrospective framework of the immediate post-war era in Europe, where the strong adherence to Nazi Germany and the Hungarian revisionism shaped the future of the country. • Symbolism in Stone: an Analysis of the 2014 Szabadság Tér Monument and the Manipulation of Memory
Symbolism in Stone: An Analysis of the 2014 Szabadság Tér Monument and the Manipulation of Memory James William Purdie 5982731 Bachelor Thesis GE3V18003 Supervisor: Dr. Rachel Gillett Word count: 12113 March 29, 2019 1 Abstract: This thesis critically analyses the 2014 neo-classical Szabadság Tér statue in Budapest, Hungary, and argues that its intended function is that of manipulating its audience into adopting a myth of the German occupation of Hungary during the Second World War. Erected overnight, the Szabadság Tér monument purports to be a memorial to all victims of the German occupation of Hungary, however, a growing number of individuals in Budapest have protested against the monument’s misrepresentation of this harrowing chapter of Hungarian history. By conducting a thorough semiotic analysis of the statue’s symbolic features alongside an explanation as to how such symbolic features have the power to mislead those who behold them, this thesis considers the manner in which the Szabadság Tér statue, and the connotations attached to its symbolic features, exercises the power to reshape the interpretations individuals have of the past. Through the symbolic juxtaposition of Hungary and Nazi Germany alongside culturally recognised semiotic features, the Szabadság Tér monument presents a mythical version of the German occupation of Hungary, one where Hungary is seen as a blameless victim and Nazi Germany an aggressive predator. In coercing Hungarians into appropriating this historically inaccurate myth, the Hungarian state likely seeks to alleviate much of its own culpability for the events of the Hungarian Holocaust, and in turn lay culpability with Germany and the Nazi regime.

The Hungarian Radical Right and Holocaust Memory James Bleecker Professor Hockenos Senior Thesis in History May 7, 2021 1 “[It is] probably the greatest and most horrible crime ever committed in the history of the world.” - Winston Churchill after learning of the deportation of Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz. 2 Preface While an academic work may not include every piece of evidence the author found, the reader should have faith that the author omitted evidence because it was unnecessary, not because he or she missed it. I do not speak Hungarian, nor have I ever been to Hungary, so I cannot make that promise. I found plenty of sources in English (some of which were translated from Hungarian), but it is only a fraction of what exists. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán once opined: “in order to understand a country one not only needs knowledge of the language, but one must also be familiar with the culture… Those who don’t have such a cultural insight will hardly be able to give a reliable and serious opinion on the political debates in another country.”1 While this is a perfectly reasonable statement there are a few caveats.

138 Book reviews Robert Nemes, Another Hungary: The Nineteenth-Century Provinces in Eight Lives. Stanford, CA: Stanford University Press, 2016. 292 pages. ISBN 9780804795913 Spanning the long nineteenth century, Robert Nemes’s remarkable book, Another Hungary: The Nineteenth-Century Provinces in Eight Lives, charts the lived experiences and diverse perspectives of eight different people (six men and two women) from the northeastern region of the former Kingdom of Hungary. Having chosen an aristocrat, a merchant, an engineer, a teacher, a journalist, a rabbi, a tobacconist, and a writer as his subjects, Nemes introduces his readers to individuals whose lives intersected in complex and revealing ways with the social, political, economic, cultural, and even environmental history of a peripheral region of Central Europe that has often been dismissed as backward or otherwise unexceptional and unimportant by scholars. Avoiding mere biography, Nemes leads his readers on an edifying journey through this provincial region of nineteenth-century Hungary, one that connects the lives of its towns, villages, and people to broader historical developments not just in Hungary and the Habsburg Empire, but also in Europe and the rest of the world. Focusing as much on the spaces and places of this region as he does on its people, Nemes contends that the villages and towns of the northeast “were not just a dull reflection of the capital city or of western Europe, but [were] interesting and important in their own right.” Significant in economic, cultural, and political terms, their history, he states, “demands our attention” as much as the individual lives of his human subjects (2).
