Writer/Performer: Scott Turner Schofield | Executive Producer: Andrea James Budget: $275K | Genre: Experimental | Expected Rating: R Length: 90 minutes | Aspect Ratio/Sound: 16:9 Dolby Digital Project Status: Pre-Production Production Schedule: Mid-2018 | Post-Production Schedule: Mid-2019 127 Steps, LLC [email protected] (323) 472-5697 “[Schofield] reaches out to the Average Joe with a mix of humor, honesty, and vulnerability.” - “Schofield proves that desire is a matter of flesh and eyes. Not simply words.” - “One of the year’s most essential theater experiences… A transgender, feminist performance artist with a national buzz going…funny, revealing, whip-smart and poetic.” - Becoming a Man in 127 EASY Steps has toured the world for nearly a decade to rave reviews, making a deep impact in every community in which it plays. It is an award- winning glimpse into the real life of one transgender man whose artistry as a writer and performer has achieved the highest critical acclaim. This show, and the life on which it is based, has been tested and proven to provoke deep audience responses. This is a voice that culture is asking for. This is an artist bringing ready-made art that culture is ready to receive. None of us has ever been more ready, or more in need, of a transgender story the caliber of Becoming a Man in 127 EASY Steps. THE PROJECT ############## Becoming a Man in 127 EASY Steps works as a stage play, but it also lends itself to a more ############## expansive artistic interpretation than the expected concert film that elevates successful ############## one man shows. This genre-bending anthology feature will ############## include Scott’s performance in front of an audience, as well as interpretive vignettes of ############## the most memorable of Scott’s 127 EASY steps. Mockumentary and documentary footage, and ####################### experimental film techniques will make each step have its own look and feel within a cohesive frame, like a curated gallery of collected works that may be viewed as separate short films, in any order, or as a cohesive whole. Some steps will be filmed expansively and luxuriously. Some will be abstract. Some will be uncomfortably intimate. Some will be spare. Some will be raucous or joyous. Some will reflect deep sorrow and pain. Every scene and every frame will transport audiences each step of the way, through the dizzying range of emotions and experiences that can only come from Scott’s unique yet universal journey to his truth. THE FILM Becoming A Man in 127 EASY Steps is a collection of 127 stories comprising one epic becoming — pre-, during, and post-gender transition. Stories of love. Honest dialogue about poor choices and their consequences. Gut-splittingly funny stories of a feminist who lives in a white man’s body. Revelations earned by walking through fire. Wry, personal and relatable social insight gained from nearly 20 years of living a publicly transgender life. In a culture fascinated with gender difference that is focused exclusively on trans women — in a media landscape that has so far only produced tropes about transition and turmoil — these stories offer audiences the rare opportunity to see the unseen, to hear the unheard, and to know the unknown. • A Transsexual Woman-Centric Critique of Alice Dreger’S “Scholarly History” of the Bailey Controversy
1 The following essay is a “peer commentary” on Alice Dreger’s article “The Controversy Surrounding The Man Who Would Be Queen: A Case History of the Politics of Science, Identity, and Sex in the Internet Age.” Both Dreger’s article and my commentary will appear in the same upcoming issue of the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior. for the time being, this paper should be cited as: Serano, J. (in press). A Matter of Perspective: A Transsexual Woman-Centric Critique of Alice Dreger’s “Scholarly History” of the Bailey Controversy. Archives of Sexual Behavior. © 2008 Springer Science; reprinted with permission *************** A Matter of Perspective: A Transsexual Woman-Centric Critique of Alice Dreger’s “Scholarly History” of the Bailey Controversy by Julia Serano As someone who is both an academic scientist and a transsexual woman and activist, I would very much welcome a proper historical analysis of the controversy over J. Michael Bailey’s book The Man Who Would Be Queen: one that fully explores the many ethical issues raised by both the book and the backlash that ensued, one that thoughtfully articulates the perspectives of both researchers/gatekeepers and their transsexual subjects/clients while taking into consideration the institutionalized power that the former group holds over the latter. On paper, Alice Dreger seems well suited for the task given her experience as a science historian, ethicist and an advocate for sexual minorities in her past work with the Intersex Society of North America. Unfortunately, while Dreger describes her article “The Man Who Would Be Queen: A Case History of the Politics of Science, Identity, and Sex in the Internet Age” as a “scholarly history,” it fails in this regard for numerous reasons, several of which I will address here.

(August 2012) Jeremy Russell Miller, B.A., University of Arkansas; M.A., University of Arkansas Co-Chairs of Advisory Committee: Dr. Joshua Heuman Dr. Aisha Durham Transgender representations generally distance the transgender characters from the audience as objects of ridicule, fear, and sympathy. This distancing is accomplished through the use of specific narrative conventions and visual codes. In this dissertation, I analyze representations of transgender individuals in popular film comedies, thrillers, and independent dramas. Through a textual analysis of 24 films, I argue that the narrative conventions and visual codes of the films work to prevent identification or connection between the transgender characters and the audience. The purpose of this distancing is to privilege the heteronormative identities of the characters over their transgender identities. This dissertation is grounded in a cultural studies approach to representation as constitutive and constraining and a positional approach to gender that views gender identity as a position taken in a specific social context.

CFP: Bailey Controversy (10/29/07; NWSA, 6/19/08-6/22/08) The Bailey Brouhaha: Community Members Speak Out on Resisting Transphobia and Sexism in Academia and Beyond For this panel, I invite individuals to submit abstracts who are interested in presenting papers about the controversy surrounding J. Michael Bailey and his theories regarding the lives and identities of transgender/transsexual women. While Bailey s book The Man Who Would be Queen was released in 2003 to overwhelmingly negative reviews, the book caused a stir for its assertion that trans women can be split into two groupings: homosexual transsexuals and autogynephilics. Trans activists and allies mobilized and took Bailey to task for his bogus claims and helped to document a compelling case against him. Many considered it an open-and- shut case until the 2007 appearance of an article by Bailey colleague and intersex researcher Alice Dreger, who published a lengthy apologia for Bailey in the Archives of Sexual Behavior and castigated trans women activists for their attempts at ruining Bailey. Possible paper topics may include (but are not limited to): The colonization of trans bodies and identities by non-trans academics The invisibility of transpeople in academia The vital importance of resisting Master Narratives like those produced by Bailey, Dreger et. Al. The role of Science in perpetuating transphobia and sexism The mobilization by the trans community post-publication of The Man Who Would Be Queen as a unique liberatory project in the history of transgender activism, including the Internet and the blogosphere An analysis of the work performed by specific trans advocates in the wake of the Bailey fiasco, such as Andrea James, Lynn Conway and Deirdre McCloskey (dis)similarities between The Man Who would be Queen and Janice Raymond s The Transsexual Empire How the discourse of Bailey, Dreger et.

Though the Bailey-Blanchard-Lawrence (BBL) model claims to be non-judgmental in a moral sense, it is undeniably judgmental in suggesting gender variance is a disease. These old school sexologists still use terminology based on century-old ideas about gender-variant behavior as a sex-fueled disease. Their definitions tangle up several distinct threads about sex and sexuality in our community. Inflammatory language about transwomen like “man who would be queen,” 1 “man without a penis,” 2 or “men trapped in men’s bodies” 3 has led to responses in kind about BBL and their apologists, but thankfully, such polemics are now limited to shrill but secluded fringes of Andrea James discussions about untangling the mess they’ve made. As I sat watching the wedding of Kevin and Scotty on Brothers & Sisters, I was moved by the grav- ity of the moment. Never before had two leading gay characters wed on a broadcast network. Watching them, I saw myself, a member of the gay community, reflected on television. Just four days after the episode aired, the Califor- nia Supreme Court handed down its decision extending marriage in the state to gay and lesbian couples. Progress is happeningI everywhere we look. As we can see in the country’s current cultural and political shift, that progress doesn’t happen in a vacuum. When lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people are portrayed in a fair, accurate and inclusive manner on televi- sion, hearts and minds are changed. The more accurately the diversity of our community is reflected, the more opportunities there are for understanding and acceptance. In addition to Kevin and Scotty’s wedding, Brothers & Sisters featured Saul, one of the rare images of a gay character over 60. Transgender characters are appearing as regular and recurring characters in honest and nuanced story arcs on Ugly Betty, Dirty Sexy Money and The L Word. Young adult shows like GREEK and South of Nowhere, as well as the daytime drama As the World Turns feature multi-dimensional gay teen characters that go to school, live their lives, date and, yes, kiss.
