Archives of Sexual Behavior. © 2008 Springer Science; reprinted with permission *************** A Matter of Perspective: A Transsexual Woman-Centric Critique of Alice Dreger’s “Scholarly History” of the Bailey Controversy by Julia Serano As someone who is both an academic scientist and a transsexual woman and activist, I would very much welcome a proper historical analysis of the controversy over J. Michael Bailey’s book The Man Who Would Be Queen: one that fully explores the many ethical issues raised by both the book and the backlash that ensued, one that thoughtfully articulates the perspectives of both researchers/gatekeepers and their transsexual subjects/clients while taking into consideration the institutionalized power that the former group holds over the latter. On paper, Alice Dreger seems well suited for the task given her experience as a science historian, ethicist and an advocate for sexual minorities in her past work with the Intersex Society of North America. Unfortunately, while Dreger describes her article “The Man Who Would Be Queen: A Case History of the Politics of Science, Identity, and Sex in the Internet Age” as a “scholarly history,” it fails in this regard for numerous reasons, several of which I will address here. -

My cousin Nina & her wife Iris who sparked their Ls in the bathroom, waving around floor length box braids, and bomb ass butch-queen aesthetics. “Pero nino, you hoppin on the cyph?. Uncle Negro or “Black”as we called him for his rich dark-skin, stay trying to wife my mom’s friends. 7:11 pm. 7 pounds 8 oz. October 27th. Maybe it was the lucky 7. Maybe it was fated for them to welcome another, intensely-loving Scorpio into their home. Or maybe it was just another blissful evening in the barrio. Where Bottles of Henny would be popped, and cousins & aunts & uncles you didn’t even know you had would reappear. -

Zakin ABSTRACT (DIS)ARTICULATING BODIES AND GENDERS: PUSSY POLITICS AND PERFORMING VAGINAS by Susan Pelle The vagina has metaphorically and metonymically been the body part that stands in for the category “woman” and it is this emphatic and fabricated link that imposes itself on bodies, psyches, and lives with often horrifying consequences. My goals in exploring performative and performing vaginas are many. I not only lay out how, why, and in what ways the “normal” and “abled” female body established in both dominant and mainstream discourses is, simply put, one with a specific type of vagina, but I also confront the “truth” that vaginas purport to tell about women and femininity. Ultimately, I maintain that representations of vaginas and the debates and discourses that surround them tell us something about our culture’s fears, anxieties, and hopes. Living life as abject can be painful, even unbearable, yet as individuals negotiate this life they can experience pleasure, assert agency, and express ethical and just visions of the world. The artists, writers, and performers explored in this dissertation strategically perform vaginas in multiple and disparate ways. As they trouble, resist, and negotiate “normative” understandings of vaginas, they simultaneously declare that the “problem” is not about bodies at all. The problem is not the vagina. -

Allison Grace Schukis) for the degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in Photography in the Department of Art to be taken June 2020 Title: Afterlives: (Gender)queer Photographic Self-Representation and Reenactment Approved: Colleen Choquette-Raphael Primary Thesis Advisor This thesis consists of a suite of photographic self-portraits and a critical introduction to the history of queer photographic self-representation through performative reenactment. The critical introduction theorizes that queer self- representation has a vested interest in history and its reenactment, whether as a disguise, or as a tool for political messaging and affirmations of existence. The creative component of the thesis is a series of large-scale color photographic self-portraits which reenact classic images from the history of “Western” art, with a marked interest in Catholic martyrdom and images previously used in queer artwork. As a whole, the photographs function as a series of identity-based historical reenactments, illustrated through performative use of the artist’s body and studio space. The photographs were intended for an exhibition that has been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Alice A. Jardine Harvard University There is a new bridge in Paris: La Passerelle Simone de Beauvoir. I love this bridge. Almost as if in perfect harmony with its namesake, it joins the National Library with the Bercy Park, once a famous wine depot, still full of vineyards. Beauvoir would no doubt have loved the fact that the bridge joins the reading of books with the imbibing of spirits. Incorporating its etymological groundings in "passer" and "elles," the Simone de Beauvoir footbridge bounces, moves, spi- raling along its various levels of passageways from side to side, up and down, within an undulating rhythm at times a little dizzying. -

The sex industry has become immensely protable, providing considerable resources, not just to individuals and networks involved in trafcking women but to governments who have come to depend on sex industry revenue. One aspect of the industry in particular that governments have come to depend upon for revenue is sex tourism (Bishop and Robinson, 1998). It is the concern of this paper to present a critical analysis of the arguments of the normalizers, whether sex in- dustrialists or their spokespersons, that sex tourism or other forms of prostitution should come to be seen as a legitimate leisure industry, one in which women and children are literally ‘men’s leisure’. -

“Understanding men’s participation in contemporary feminist movements” Payal Soobug Department of Sociology Bachelor thesis in Sociology, 15 h.p Spring Semester 2017 Supervisor: Daniel Ritter Abstract Contemporary feminist movements are mixed gendered but men’s participation in them remain low. Many sociological studies have neglected to study men’s role and participation in feminist movements and focused mainly on women’s position. This thesis builds on social movement theories and previous research conducted within this field. This study aims to reveal factors that motivate men’s participation and roles played by them in contemporary feminist movements. Qualitative interviews are used for data collection. The data indicate that men’s role in feminist movements is designated to support the movements. Factors that motivated them to participate in the movements include; rational, network and political motivations. WHY DON’T YOU TAKE YOUR DRESS OFF AND FIGHT LIKE A MAN?: HOMOSEXUALITY AND THE 1960S CRISIS OF MASCULINITY IN THE GAY DECEIVERS BRIAN W OODMAN University of Kansas During the 1960s, it seemed like everything changed. The youth culture shook up the status quo of the United States with its inves- titure in the counterculture, drugs, and rock and roll. Students turned their universities upside-down with the spirit of protest as they fought for free speech and equality and against the Vietnam War. Many previously ignored groups, such as African Americans and women, stood up for their rights. Radical politics began to challenge the primacy of the staid old national parties. “The Kids” were now in charge, and the traditional social and cultural roles were being challenged. Everything old was old-fashioned, and the future had never seemed more unknown. Nowhere was this spirit of youthful metamorphosis more ob- vious than in the transformation of views of sexuality. In the 1960s sexuality was finally removed from its private closet and cele- brated in the public sphere. Much of the nation latched onto this new feeling of openness and freedom toward sexual expression. In the era of “free love” that characterized the latter part of the decade, many individuals began to explore their own sexuality as well as what it meant to be a traditional man or woman. It is from this historical context that the Hollywood B-movie The Gay Deceivers (1969) emerged. This small exploitation film, directed by Bruce Kessler and written by Jerome Wish, capitalizes on the new view of sexuality in the 1960s with its novel (at least for the times) comedic exploration of homosexu- ality. -

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Sissy as a term for an effeminate male developed from its use as an affectionate variant of "sister"; it then came to be used as a disparaging term for boys who behaved like girls. The American Heritage Dictionary defines sissy as "a boy or man regarded as effeminate." The term is pejorative, and its use as such has powerful effects on male behavior generally. It serves as a kind of social control to enforce "gender appropriate" behavior. Indeed, so strong is its power that, in order to avoid being labeled a sissy, many boys--both those who grow up to be homosexual and those who grow up to be heterosexual--consciously attempt to redirect their interests and inclinations from suspect areas such as, for example, hair styling or the arts toward stereotypically masculine interests such as sports or engineering. In addition, they frequently repress-- sometimes at great cost--aspects of their personalities that might be associated with the feminine. At the root of the stigma attached to sissies is the fear and hatred of homosexuality and, to a lesser extent, of women. Certainly, much of the anxiety aroused by boys who are perceived as sissies is the fear (and expectation) that they will grow up to be homosexuals. The stigmatizing power of the term has had particularly strong repercussions on gay male behavior, as well as on the way that gay men are perceived, both by heterosexuals and by each other.
